I. INTRODUCTION
Do you like expressing your feelings through music? There was an era in music history when
people could hardly express their emotions in music. This was because they had to follow standards in
creating music. However, people wanted to be more independent. They tried creating songs that could
express their sentiments by means of using song-like melodies, richer harmonies, denser textures, and
wider ranges of pitch. It was a time when composers used music to increase emotional expression.
This era was called the Romantic era.
Why do you think it was called as such?
What sample music would represent this kind of era?
II. TOPIC OUTLINE
A. Discussion
What is the historical-cultural background of Romantic instrumental music?
Primarily, the Romantic Movement (1800-1900) was an intellectual, artistic, and literally
movement that started in the second half of the 18 th century as ideas spread from Germany to
other European countries.
How is the Romantic period music related to its historical and cultural background?
As a result of changes in social and political standards of the 18 th century, Romantic era music
was formed. People in the Romantic era moved away from the standards of balance and restraint
prominent during the Classical era. The Romantic era swayed away from the experimentation.
Melodious music became a dominant characteristic of music and it became very expressive.
What are the characteristic features of instrumental Romantic music?
Noteworthy are the characteristics of instrumental romantic music. These characteristics include
themes that focused on national identity; surrender to nature; the mystic and supernatural; a
longing for the infinite, the strange, and surprising; spiritual experiences and subjectivism.
Art song – a composition for solo voice and piano that gives premium on symbolic meanings
attached on the lyric.
What kind of art and media portrayed Romantic Period elements?
Romantic period elements are presented in arts and media in the form of paintings and literature.
What are the musical elements of the Romantic Period?
The melody tones became more lyrical.
The use of the piano as accompaniment resulted to the adding of emotion, mood, and
meaning to the melody through the use of harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic material
independent of the voice.
Various music themes
Used sharp contrasts
What were the performance practices during the Romantic Period?
Romantic music composers found themselves essentially compelled to use sharp contrasts. Other
than abrupt changes in the volume of musical compositions, contrasts were also found in the use
of range of pitch.
What is program music?
It is a form of instrumental music of a narrative and descriptive kind that is intended to express a
story or images that depict the theme and scenes in a literary text. Program music refers to the
Romantic-period European musical work.
