Definitions: Unit 3

1. Apartment – a set of rooms for living in, especially on one floor of a building


2. Attic – the space or room at the top of a building, under the roof, often used
for storing things
3. Cellar – a room under the ground floor of a building, usually used
for storing things
4. Commercial district – commercial refers to any property used for business
activities. Commercial refers to hospitals, assembly plants, storage warehouses,
shopping centers, office spaces, or any other location for a business enterprise.
5. Cottage – a small simple house, especially in a rural area
6. Detached house – A detached house is not connected to any other building
7. Drive (n)– a private area in front of a house or other building which you
can drive and park your car 
8. Fireplace – an open space for a fire in the wall of a room
9. Gate – a barrier like a door that is used to close an opening in a fence or a wall
outside a building
10.Residential area – it refers to buildings that are designed to be lived in
11.Playground – an outdoor area where children can play
12.Stairs – a set of steps built between two floors inside a building
13.Studio flat – a small flat with one main room for living and sleeping in and
usually a kitchen and bathroom
14.Suburbs – an area where people live that is outside the centre of a city
15.Terraced house – a house that is one of a row of houses that are joined
together on each side
16.View – what you can see from a particular place or position, especially
beautiful countryside
17.Picturesque – visually attractive, especially in a pretty style.
18.Tiny – very small in size or amount
19.Central heating – a system of heating buildings by warming air or water at
one place and then sending it to different rooms in pipes
20.Climate – the general weather conditions usually found in a particular place
