EDUCATION MAKES YOUR WORLD BIGGER

You go to school for several reasons.
First, education makes your world bigger. In the world of nature, for example, with its plant and animal life,
you can lean many things which were unknown to you before. Then you meet great and interesting people you never
knew existed. You understand many wonderful and beautiful things which were not a part of your life before.
Second, education promotes your physical well-being. You learn to take care of your health and vigor. The
school’s business is not only to train the mind but also to look after the physical development of the children.
The elementary and high schools give you training in the tool subjects. Your use of English, your arithmetic,
your ability to comprehend that you read – these are all necessary to get along in the world, or as bases for higher
studies later on.
Another aim of education is the preparation for useful service. You discover your own ability and aptitudes
and therefore you are able to select a vocation wisely.
Schools also train you for home life. You become a worthy member of your family. Your social studies,
literature, music, home economics and practical arts in school are for this purpose.
Schools also make you good citizens of your country. You learn your duties, use the common means of
enjoyment, such as reading, social gatherings, painting, stamp collecting, gardening and other interests.
Finally, one very good reason for going to school is for character building. Of course, there is a saying that
character is not taught, but caught. The school is a very good training ground because of the presence of clubs,
organizations, sports, and other interests that can help in the molding of your character.

ENRICHMENT:

1. What benefits do schools give you?

2. How does the school train you for home life?
3. How does school train you for community and career?
4. If you were asked to describe an educated man, how would you describe it?
PERCENTAGE COMPOSITION OF A COMPOUND
Are you interested to know how much of an element is present in a compound? You can answer this question
by determining percentage composition. The mass of each element in a compound compared to the entire mass of the
compound multiplied by 100 percent is called the percentage composition of the compound, so, the percentage
composition of the compound tells you the percentage of the mass made by each element in a compound.
Let us compare it in a classroom situation. You are 50 in your section with 21 boys and 29 girls. If you will be
asked what percent of the class are boys and what percent are girls, how are you going to compute for the answer? If
your answer is 42% boys and 58% girls, you got it correctly! Let us have an example for the compound which is so
important to all of us, water (H 2O). the computation below shows the molar mass of water. If you will be asked to
compute for the percentage of oxygen and hydrogen in water, how are you going to do it?
We can have the formula as:
Mass of element in the compound
% mass of element = x 100%
Mass of the compound

Example:

H2O = 1 O atom (16.00g) = 16.00 g

2 H atoms (1.01g) = 2.02 g
18.02 g

% mass of O = 16g
X 100
18.02 g
= 0.887 x 100 = 88.7 %

TRY THIS!
1. Glucose (C6H12O6) is a six-carbon sugar (hexose) which is also known as the blood sugar. It is an energy
source that fuels our body. How many percent of carbon is percent in the glucose?
2. The “fuel value” of the hydrogen- containing fuels depends on the mass percentage of hydrogen (H). rank the
following compounds in terms of their “fuel value” with 1 as the highest fuel value and 3 as the lowest.
a. Ethane (C2H6)
b. Propane (C3H8)
c. Ethanol (C2H5OH)

MUSIC OF THE CLASSICAL PERIOD (1750-1820)

The Classical Era, also called “Age of Reason”, is the period from 1750-1820. The cultural life was
dominated by the aristocracy, as patrons of musicians and artists generally influenced the arts. Significant changes in
musical forms and styles were made.

In the middle of the 108th century, Europe began to move toward a new style in architecture,
literature, and the arts, known as Classicism. It was also pushed forward by changes in the economic order and in
social structure. Instrumental music was patronized primarily by the nobility.

Important historical events that occurred in the West during this era were the French Revolution and
the Napoleonic Wars, the American Declaration of Independence in 1776, and the American Revolution.

The term classical denotes conformity with the principles and characteristics of ancient Greek and
Roman literature and art which were formal, elegant, simple, freed and dignified. The same characteristics may also
describe the melodies of classical music. Harmony and texture is homophonic in general. The dynamics of loud and
soft was clearly shown through the extensive use of crescendo diminuendo. A style of style of broken chord
accompaniment called Alberti Bass was practiced.

The great composers of the period were: Franz Joseph Hayd, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig
Van Beethoven.

Sonata, Concerto and Symphony are the instrumental forms developed during this era while Opera
Seria and Opera Buffa are the two vocal forms.

2. What does the term classical means?
3. What the vocal forms in classical period?

ARTS OF THE RENAISSANCE & BAROQUE PERIODS

RENAISSANCE PERIOD (1400-1600)

Renaissance was the period of economic progress. The period stirred enthusiasm for the study of
ancient philosophy and artistic values.

Italian Renaissance began in the 14th century. It was an era of great artistic and intellectual
achievement with the birth of secular art. The focus was on realistic and humanistic art.

Renaissance art was characterized by accurate anatomy, scientific perspective, and deeper landscape.
Renaissance painters depicted real-life figures and their sculptures were naturalistic portraits of
human beings.

Architecture during this period was characterized by its symmetry and balance.

As the classical Greeks believed in the harmonious development of the person through a sound mind,
by the practice of athletics, the Renaissance held up the ideal of the well-rounded man, knowledgeable in a number of
fields such as philosophy, science, arts, including painting and music – and who applies his knowledge to productive
and creative activity.

The Renaissance was a period of experimentation. It brought man into full view just like the human
figure in Greek art.

The Renaissance art marks the transition of Europe from the medieval period to the early modern age.
In many parts of Europe, early Renaissance art was created in parallel with late medieval art. By 1500, the
Renaissance style prevailed.

The greatest cathedral building of the age was rebuilding of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

ENRICHMENT:
1. What are the characteristics of art during Renaissance?
2. What is the focus of Italian Renaissance?
3. How would you describe Renaissance?
