SURVIVAL and Status Effects

This document summarizes various status effects that can hinder the player's survival in the mod, including bleeding wounds, fatigue, poisoning, and more. It describes the types of bleeding (lacerations and exsanguination), how armor can reduce bleeding damage, and that bleeding must be treated using medical supplies, not instant healing items. Fatigue depletes the stamina bar through various actions, slowing the player when tired and preventing actions when exhausted. Stamina recovers over time but can be replenished through artifacts or items. Poisoning has variable effects that cannot be healed without cures like medical kits, and an HEV suit provides protection from hazards that can cause poisoning.

This mod adds quite a number of special

“status effects” that could hinder your
avatar’s well-being.
Lacerations, poisoning, different kinds of bleeding
wounds, fatigue, and probably more to come are all
things the player should be well aware of in order
to not succumb to the hordes of Hell.
In this guide we’ll talk about them, how they
work
and the methods to counter them, as well as of other
survival mechanics implemented.

BLEEDING:
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Bleeding wounds can present themselves in
two forms:
ꙮ LACERATIONS
ꙮ EXSANGUINATION

Some monsters, usually the ones

endowed with sharp claws or teeth,
are capable of delivering attacks
that’ll pierce even through armors,
opening severe wounds that will bleed continuously.
Imps, Cacodemons, Hell Knights, Demons, and all
those attacks coming from unnaturally sharp
sources or heavy bladed weapons. The more
powerful the monster, the higher the chance of a
laceration resulting from one of their attacks.

Each monster, depending on its “rank” has a

different chance to inflict a laceration with one
of their attacks. Once the lacerating attack
connects, it will inflict a different amount of
damage over time, a wound that will rapidly
bleed out before closing. The gravity of said
wound depend on what kind of armor are you
currently wearing, and not on the nature of the
attack. Even a Imp could cut your belly open if
you’re not wearing anything!
depending on your level of protection:

(75 points of damage in 50 seconds)

(50 points of damage in 30 seconds)

(30 points of damage in 30 seconds)

(15 points of damage in 45 seconds)

Completely absorbs Lacerations

Lacerations can be treated using any
method for closing open wounds:
❖ Bandages
❖ Portable Medikits
❖ Medical Backpacks
❖ Life Support Modules
❖ Regeneration Artifacts
Lacerations WON’T be healed using various kind
of instant-healing methods, such as:
❖ Painkillers
❖ Battle Drugs
❖ Stimpacks and normal Medikits
❖ Health Boost Artifacts
These methods in fact, rather than closing your
wounds, usually just increase your resistance to
pain and physical resilience, or grant you some
kind of mystical life force, without altering any
previously received injuries.

This kind of bleeding occurs when

you’ve been already heavily wounded
by other sources, and are low on
health.
In this case, the main reason of your bleeding is
not because of a particularly deep wound that’s
rapidly leaking blood, but rather a various
number of more or
less severe wounds, that are slowly dragging you
toward death.

If your Health drops below 25.

Exsanguination makes you lose blood at a

much slower rate compared to Lacerations,
but they won’t stop until you either heal
yourself or die.
You’ll also feel exhausted because of your poor
health conditions and that’s why you will see
your Stamina bar quickly depleting after
getting this status effect.
Exsanguination can also be somewhat
countered by the Armor you are wearing, in
various degrees:

(1 point of damage every 10 seconds)

(1 point of damage every 15 seconds)

(1 point of damage every 25 seconds)

(The armor will automatically prevent

bleeding)

To get back in shape (kinda), you just need to get

your health above the value of 25. Any method to
achieve this will work.

FATIGUE:
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
LiTDOOM features a customizable Stamina
system that will keep track of your
character’s physical endurance. Some of the
player classes, such as the Doomguy (who has
infinite stamina) and the Space Marine, won’t
have to worry so much about them. But for the
most part of the others, it’s advisable to
keep an eye on your stamina bar, since
becoming exhausted during a fight could make
the difference between life and death.

This is how your stamina bar will present itself

on your HUD. Performing various kinds of
physical action will deplete it. Once your Stamina
reaches that red notch, you’ll be Tired.
Let’s go in order:

Here’s a list of all actions that depletes staminq

and in what measure:

Unarmed Attacks Low

Axe Attacks Medium

Axe Attacks High

(charged)
Survival Instinct Extremely High

Exsanguinating Very High

Sprinting Depends on equipped

Weapon

While “Tired”, you won’t be able to sprint anymore,

and your standard running speed will be
reduced.
However, Melee attacks and the Survival Instinct
ability can still be used while tired. Once your
stamina reaches 0, or a point where you don’t
have the minimum required amount to perform a
specific action, you won’t be able to use them
normally anymore, as you’ll be Exhausted.
To be more precise, you can still perform melee
attacks, but they’ll be much slower and clumsier.
This also applies to axe and knife throws (not to
knife slashes, as cutting with a light bladed
weapon doesn’t require much strength).
Stamina will recover automatically over time, but
sometimes, especially with some player classes,
this could take a lot of time. So how can you
catch your breath?

Most artifacts granting life force from the souls

of the dead will restore a variable amount of
stamina.

Some hellish Artifacts also help replenishing your

energies. The Infernal Heart specifically, quicken
your stamina regeneration as well as your
health regeneration, for a prolonged period of
time.

Finally, some artificial items such as

Erythropoietin shots and Berserker Packs will
also impact on your Stamina, although the
Berserker Pack has its own peculiar way of
doing so. It’ll be described more in detail it the
ITEMS GUIDE (part 1).
Speaking of Berserker Packs, obtaining the
“Berserker’s Strength” feat from any item
that grants it, will also reduce the stamina
cost for
Sprinting, as well as letting you perform melee
attacks at full speed even when exhausted.
When this effect is active, your stamina bar’s
color will change to a more intense orange:

POISON:

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
As of 0.5, LiTDOOM features a new status effect
that occurs when you go for a stroll on nukage
without the right protection and get poisoned by
other means.

Currently, there are only 3 situations in which a

player can be poisoned:

(this can be disabled from the mod
options)

(Trites, green-eyed Imps, …)

Effects aside, there are two main differences
between poisoning and other status effects such as
lacerations and fatigue:
❖ It won’t go away by itself unless it’s cured.
❖ Its effects are variable
In fact, once poisoned, you’ll accuse various
symptoms from time to time, changing from
vertigo and loss of balance to blurred vision and
hemoptysis (coughing blood).
You’ll also notice that your Stamina Regeneration is
completely halted while poisoned.
Poison acts the slowest of all the status effects
until now: if not for the HUD warning icon, you
wouldn’t probably even know that you’ve been
poisoned until a couple of minutes have passed.
Each symptom is manifested at random time
intervals, along with a few points of damage to
your health. As such, this condition is not as
lethal and urgent as the other ones, but WILL
slowly drag you to death if not treated. The real
problem with this ailment is that you can’t shrug
it off as easily as a bleeding wound, and that its
symptoms can put you in a bad spot if they
present themselves during a fight.
Treating poison requires advanced medical
supplies or experimental craftable drugs.
Bandages, stimpacks and hellish artifacts
boosting your health in any way will do absolutely
nothing to cure the poison.
Current working cures are:
❖ Portable Medikits
❖ Medical Backpacks
❖ Anti-Hazard Drugs
❖ Life Support Modules
❖ Traveling to the next map
----
NOTE: Due to gameplay balance, poison is
automatically cured when traveling from a map
to the next one. This could change in the future
depending on feedback I get from the players of
this mod.

As doctors always say, prevention is often

the best cure! To avoid being poisoned in
the first place, wearing an HEV suit is the
way to go. Wearing one will not only
protect you from damaging surfaces such
as lava and nukage, but will also make you
completely immune to incoming acid damage and
poisoning.
Of course If you’ve been already poisoned, then
It’s already too late to wear a gas mask! If
anything, if you are wearing one while
poisoned and you start coughing blood, you’ll
need to instantly remove it to prevent
suffocation!

Detailed information on how an HEV Suit works
