Nonverbal communication can add to or replace verbal communication.
Nonverbal communication refers to any locomotive actions performed by a person in
order to say what they want to say but do not have a word for it. it is an effective way for people
to express themselves, their thoughts, and feelings. People in today's society are more focused
with how you say something rather than what you want to say; they react depending on the tone
of your voice, your facial expression, and your body movements. According to Naz Baheshti
(2018), if our nonverbal communication is not aligned with our spoken words, our message will
not resonate at all. So in that case, nonverbal communication can be an essential to accomplish
good communication.
The reason why this principle of nonverbal communication resonates with me is because
I have used this kind of principle in various situations and find it as a convenient and effective
way of communicating with other people without exerting unnecessary words or effort. Many
nonverbal gestures are included in this principle but “Emblems” are the gestures that I frequently
use. This is a nonverbal gesture can be use to convey information even if I’m is not using any
verbal communication. My example is when I put my thumb up to indicate that I agree with their
point, or when I shake my hand sideways to indicate that I am dissatisfied with their answer.
To sum up, nonverbal communication serves as a bridge that enables you to emphasize
the true meaning of what you want to say to the other person. It is also the basis for how people
respond to your message, and if it fails, serious problems and misunderstandings can occur. So,
the next time you communicate with others, make sure to use appropriate nonverbal gestures so
that you can build verbal and nonverbal relationships with others.
