Megger Testing Guide for Electricians

The Megger is a device that has been used since 1889 to test insulation resistance and detect electrical leaks in wiring and equipment. It works by passing a current through the object being tested and measuring the leakage. Regular testing is important to check for degradation over time due to environmental factors and stress. The Megger is useful for verifying insulation levels in devices like motors, cables, and generator windings. The procedure involves connecting the Megger's line and earth knobs to the object and rotating the handle to observe the resistance reading.

Theory:

The device is being used since 1889, popularity raised during 1920s, since long back devise is same in its
uses and purpose of testing, few real improvement appeared in recent years with its design and quality of
tester. Now high quality option are available which are easy to use and quite safe.

What is Megger?
Insulation resistance quality of an electrical system degrades with time, environment condition i.e.
temperature, humidity, moisture and dust particles. It also get impacted negatively due to the presence of
electrical and mechanical stress, so it’s become very necessary to check the IR (Insulation resistance) of
equipment at a constant regular interval to avoid any measure fatal or electrical shock.

Uses of Megger

The device enables us to measure electrical leakage in wire, results are very reliable as we shall
be passing electric current through device while we are testing. The equipment basically uses for
verifying the electrical insulation level of any device such as motor, cable, generator winding,
etc. This is a very popular test being carried out since very long back. Not necessary, it shows us
the exact area of electrically puncture but shows the amount of leakage current and level of
moisture within electrical equipment/winding/system.
Resistance testing by using Megger
Apparatus:
Megger, resistors of different ratings (mega ohm)

Procedure:
1. Megger has two knobs, which are lined, and earth.
2. The line knob is called phase while the earth knob is called neutral.
3. Now take a resistor and connect it between phase and neutral of Megger.
4. Rotate the handle, needle will show some resistance, valve in mega ohm.
5. Note down the reading.
6. Now change the resister and repeat the process

Insulation testing by using Megger

Apparatus:
Megger, equipment that is going to be tested

Procedure:
1. Megger has two knobs which are lined and earth
2. In case of short circuit between body and winding of equipment, Egger show zeroes
voltage which indicates the short circuit
3. Now take a motor, connect line knob to the winding and earth knob to the body of motor.
4. Rotate the handle if needle show zero voltage then it is short-circuited otherwise it is
okay.
