3. What is mechanical advantage?
It is the principle function of Block & Tackle system, we get the mechanical advantage
by increase the number of threads or pulleys, so the weight is going to be divided by
number of threads that make lifting weight (String weight) easier and more efficient.
4. A drill string of 5200ft has 4500ft of drill pipe with a weight of 25.6 lb/ft and 700ft of
drill collar with a weight of 99 lb/ft. What is the total weight of the drill string?
- Total weight of drill pipe = 4500 ft * 25.6 lb/ft = 115200 lb
- Total weight of drill collar = 700 ft * 99 lb/ft = 69300 lb
- Total weight of drill string = 115200 + 69300 = 184500 lb.
5. Calculate the load on the static fast line for the drill string (in an empty hole) given in
question 4.
The traveling block and the hook weighs 30,000lb. The block has 8 threads.
FFL = (WDS + WTB)/ n = (184500 + 30000) / 8 = 26812.5 lb.
6. For the same information as in question 4 and 5. Calculate the load in the dead line.
FDL = (WDS + WTB) / n = (184500 + 30000) / 8 = 26812.5 lb.
7. For the same information as above, what is the load in the dynamic fast line?
FFL-DYN = FFL / e shn
Assume e sh=0.98
FFL-DYN = 26812.5/ (0.98)8 = 31515.82 lb
8. The nominal strength of the 1 1/8" drilling line on the rig is 130,000lb. With a safety
factor of 3.5 is the drilling line sufficient for the drill string in question 5?
FFL-DYN * Safety Factor = 31515.82 * 3.5 = 110305.37 lb which is less than 130000, so the
drilling line is sufficient.
9. Calculate the static weight on the mast (crown block weight is 12000 lbs).
LD = WDS + WTB + LFL + LDL + WCB = 184500 + 30000 + 26812.5 + 26812.5 + 12000 =
280125 lb.
10. What is the hoisting horsepower needed to lift the drill string in Q4 with a hook velocity
of 135 ft/min.
HPhoist = Lhoist * Vhook /33000 = (184500 + 30000) * 135 /33000 = 877.5 hp.
11. Calculate the substructure load for the well in question 4 to 5 (Assume the setback load to
be 30000 lb)
Lss = LRT + LSB = 184500 + 30000 = 214500 lb.
12. What is the volume in bbls for an open hole of 5000 ft drilled with a 16" drilling bit?
- Vhole = (16)2 * 5000 /1029.4 = 1243.45 bbl.
13. How many bbl does a 8000ft of 5x4 (OD-ID) drill pipes displace?
- Displacement = (OD2 –ID2)* D / 1029.4
- Displacement = (25 -16) * 8000 / 1029.4 = 69.943 bbl.
