CHAPTER ONE

1. INTRODUCTION
Internship is an opportunity for a student to gain practice in a real world of works under the
guidance of knowledgeable & experienced organization management. The objectives of
internship is to educate qualified, motivated & practice oriented

Students .internship should provide the students with valuable insights in to the professional
& industry oriented side of their field of study .it should enable students to put in to practice
the skills, techniques &knowledge that are important for success in their future work place.

Due to the above reason ASU has organised 8 weeks of training in any company on a choice
students to provide every student an opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge achieved
during the course of study and to acquire new skills in managing relationship & carrying out
the jobs assigned .these is the reason why we came to Arerti TVET collage to be trained in
order to get practical skills.

I have performed my summer field practice at Arerti technical vocational collage. It is one of
the new collage which was found in north shewa of Ethiopia at minjar shenkora woreda town
of Arerti & it was established in 2001 e.c By the federal democratic republic government of
Ethiopia .And the main stakeholder of this collaged are minjar shenkora woreda technic
&vocational enterprise development office, minjar shenkora woreda culture &tourism office
&Arerti town municipal. And also this collage is addressed by the E-mail Arerti
tvet2008@g-mail.com

When I see the scope During this training, we have learned and practiced numerous
knowledge and skills about basic network installation that is distributing network in
some new buildings, for example workers office. Our summer field practice was mainly
focused on basic network installation,

2. Background of The Organization

Arerti technical vocational training collage established in 2001 e.c this collage owner is
government and the programme of training are regular, evening and short terms in different
vocation .the training situation firstly at small scale level and currently enhancing by different
occupation ,qualification and quantity through equipped training materials time to time

1

The training has carried out not only in compound as well as through company training
enrolled. But for the cooperative training has not enough centre because of capacity of the
town and the enterprise outlook barrier

However Arerti technical and vocational collage have to training the minjar shenkora &
surrounding area of the society by the department of the following at the begging time

General mechanics, Automotive engine service, Masonry, Electrical or Electronics

&Carpentry and Joinery

The numbers of the employee during the starting time was 32 & the numbers of the students
was 164 now a day the collage is increased its capacity and maximize its numbers of the
employee is 69 & the numbers of the students is 706 well as the numbers of the department
from the existing department now it adds Drafting, Surveying, Ict, Machine technology,
General metal fabrication &assembly (GMFA), Furniture making &Construction. This
collage will give graduate to a numbers of the students in the different levels (level- I up to
Level-IV in every year of the academic staff).

The main product and service to students are more focus on the practical manner of the
knowledge than theoretical, give training by the real objects. For example: - automotive
machine like cars, Desktop computers, some networking cable for trains &and other related
materials are available.

2.1 MISSION & VISION OF THE COLLAGE

2.2.1 MISSION

CHAPTER-TWO
OBJECTIVES OF INTERNSHIP
2.1 Were the objectives achieved?
Generally the objectives of internship is to change the theoretical knowledge into practical or
Into real world life aspects and to solve problems . Beside to accomplish the general objective
of the internship. We accomplish the following activities this are:
Done all activity those advice by current supervisor.( try to repeat the activity that we
practice at the staff of the laboratory)
Make activity practically alone after seen the supervisor.
Follow the procedure of the activity that ordered by the supervisor.
2. There is numbers of the (scientific professionals) skills during the internship. Those are:

2.1.1 PRACTICAL SKILLS

The internship have the opportunity to connect the theoretical part with the current practical
parts .therefore by the aiding of the summer instructors we gained knowledge about real
world industry (practical skills).

2.1.2 THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE

During this internship period in this collage increase our theoretical knowledge .that means
the summer instructors first give or expresses theoretical parts of the trains. Due to this
theoretical knowledge upgrade.

2.1.3 INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS

During this internship period the interpersonal skills have seen in communicate and interact
with individually and in groups.

Due to this interaction with my super visors and other trained students we developed our
interpersonal skills like: we got confidence and our ability to listen and understand, problem
solving, decision making, effective communication, team work and responsibility.

2.1.4 LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Leadership skills a capabilities that a person needs in order to be achieve gaol success full

We gained leadership skills from our supervisor who appointed us for internship period
which may include:-

 The managements of time

 Motivating individual’s
 Giving feed back
 Building teams & etc.

2.1.5 ENTERPRENEURSHIP SKILLS

Entrepreneurship is initiating, doing, achieving & building an enterprise or organization
rather than just watching or describing one

Due to this the good relationship between educational institution and business society is very
important for the purpose of implementing an internship program as a part of curriculum and
upgrade entrepreneurship

2.2 CHALLENGES WHICH DURING THE INTERNSHIP

Disagreement of the organization for accepting this industrial
linkage of the organization and the higher educational institution.
The organization staff member were not willingness to give enough
information about the organization.
Lack of confidence to made ,afraid to ask crucial information
Lack of practical experience from my side
 Due to the above challenges I have to gained experience’s like:-

I have to gained full confidence to make different activities & also the main things in every
activities means to achieve a goal I understand that every person respect others and made
different questions legally and respects method smoothly

Generally we were experience’s the following aspects

 Understand the constraints of working life and functional relationship

within and between organizations.

3.3. Method and Materials.

In our filed practice I have used different techniques or methods to get practical knowledge
about network installation. Those are primary and secondary data gathering method.

3.3.1 Primary data gathering method

Interview: I have used this technique to get basic information about network installation.
This method was applied directly contacting with my current supervisor. For example: I have
asked Ato Biruke chekole to get knowledge about hardware network installation.

Observation: This technique is the most reliable primary data gathering method. Because I
have used this method when I was in practice time.so I have seen how network is installed
practically.

3.3.2 Secondary data gathering method

Document: To know about the back ground of the organization (Arerti TVET collage) I
have used document of the organization
Internet: To get additional information about network installation, tool I used internet
access.
Questioner’s paper: To know information about the numbers of students, employees, in
Arerti TVET collage I have to prepared questioners paper to one of the staff workers Ato
Yesshibelay Getamesay.

Tools Used for Network Installation

Switch, modem, Rack , Cat 6e cable, Rj45 , Cable crimper, Cable tester.
Switch: We have used switch to join multiple computers together within one local area
network. It provides a centralized connection

Types of Switch

1. Unmanaged Switches: These types of switches have no configuration interface or

options. They are plug and play. They are typically the least expensive and slow speed
2. Managed Switches: These types of switches have configuration interface, so we can
configure as we wants. It is flexible, have high speed and high security.

Figure 3. 1 managed switch

Cat 6e cable: In my filed practice I have used category 6e cables. This type of cable is used
to transfer high-speed data communications and its data transfer rate is 10-Gbps Ethernet
speeds can be reached without sacrificing the max cable length of 100 meters.

Figure 3. 2 cat 6e cable

RJ45 (A register jack (RJ)): is a standardized physical network interface for connecting
telecommunications or data equipment. "45” refer to the number of the interface standard.
Each RJ45 connector has eight pins. Ethernet cable has eight wires with eight different
colours. Each pins of RJ45 must be match with each colours of Ethernet cable to transfer
data.

Figure 3. 3 RJ45
Cable Crimper: is a device used to peel cable cover and used to cut cable with equal
position. It is also used to add a connector to the end of a cable.

9

Figure 3. 4 crimper

Steps of Cable Crimping

Step1.Fold each pair of wires backwards to expose the core of the cable.

Step 2. Cut off the core and discard.

Step 3.Straighten the twisted wires using 2 pair of tweezers.

Step 4. Arrange the wires in a raw, placing them into the position, running from right to left.

Step 5.Trim the Wires to a suitable length.

Step 6. Insert the wires into the RJ-45 connector, making sure that they stay aligned and
each colour goes into its appropriate channel.

10
Internship For Third Year Computer Science Student, Assosa University

Step 7. Use the crimping tool to crimp the RJ-45 connector to the cable by pressing the
jacket and cable into the connector.

Step 8. Finally use cable tester that your cable is working properly when both ends are
crimped.

Rack: is a metal frame used to hold various hardware devices such as switches, cable and
other electronic equipment.

Figure 3. 5 Rack
Type of Cable

There are two types of Ethernet network cables. These are: - Straight-through and crossover
cables. Both end of cable is called RJ45 connector.

1 Straight-Through Cable: We use straight-through cable to connect different type of

devices. Example. Switch to router, switch to pc, and switch to server etc. When we see this
cable both side (side A and side B) of cable have wire arrangement with the same colour.in

my field practice we use these type of cable. Side A Side B

1. White/Green 1. White/Green
2. Green 2. Green
3. White/Orange 3. White/Orange
4. Blue 4. Blue
5. White/Blue 5. White/Blue
6. Orange 6.Orange
7.White Brown 7.white brown
11
Internship For Third Year Computer Science Student, Assosa University

8. brown 8.brown

2 Cross-Over Cable:
We use cross-over cable to connect same type of devices. Example; Switch to Switch,
Computer to Computer, and Hub to Hub etc. When we see this cable both side (side A and

side B) of cable have wire arrangement with different colour.

Side A Side B
1. White/Green 1. White/Orange
2. Green 2. Orange
3. White/Orange 3. White/Green
4. Blue 4. Blue
5. White/Blue 5. White/Blue
6. Orange 6. Green
7. White/Brown 7. White /Brown
8. Brown 8. Brown

Cable Tester: Cable tester is used to check whether the cable is working properly or not. It
has light indicator if the cable is works properly the whole numbers that are written on the
tester are bright otherwise it becomes dark.

Software tool

 Microsoft office word 2007 I will use it for writing and editing the document as
well as presentation
 Microsoft power point 2010 used to prepare
presentation
 Window 8 operating system.
The reason for using this operating system is for
security purpose and does not easily attack by virus.

The major duty to perform during this field practice are :

 Use materials properly without any damage.

 Climb cable properly during working time.
 Punching properly cat 6e cabled to RJ45.
 Give attention for activity when the supervisor has done different practical activity.
 After climbing the cable arrange the colour.

13

CHAPTER-FOUR
Proposed system Design
4.1 Design Goal

Design Goal: describing the quality of system that developers should consider,
define the value against which option are evaluated in generally there are different
design criteria among that performance, availability, maintainability, usability. I

Performance: Response time of the system should be minimum and very fast.

Usability: The system should be so that users can use it easily without confusion.

Availability: The system should be available for users or students.

Maintenance: The system should be easy to modify and share any functional things or any
necessary things. If there are any additional requirements the system is flexible to change.

4.2. Common network Architecture

The term network architecture refers to the combination of network topology,
communication method, hardware components and access method used to construct a
particular network. Over the years a number of network architectures have become very
popular. Out of those are token ring, star and bus.in this network installation we used star
network because switch used as like hub., When we or install the network we apply different
techniques. This technique is called topology. Topology is the way which deals about how
the device of the network and the wires are linked together. There are around four types of
topology but we apply only star topology because it is if one the device is fails the other can
work properly.

CHAPTER-FIVE
Conclusion and Recommendation
5.1 Conclusion
In my conclusion of this field practice is initiated to identify and analyse some of
problem’s associated with network installation at Arerti TVET collage and also mainly to
come up with possible solution to those problems. To generalise our field practice there are a
lot of materials we used during summer field practice for network installation some of that
are:-switch,cat6e cable,RJ45,cable. crimper, cable taster, rack, and also to know how to use
the materials that used network installation and which material was needed.
5.2 Recommendation
As I recommended I have seen in summer field practice there are a lot of problems and
challenges where happening for performing effective work like lack of confidence, made
afraid to ask important question, lack of wise use of resources, lack of practical experience
mean capability of changing theoretical knowledge in to real world application. I am
interested to recommends to our department students to be able understand each course
effectively, be able to develop wise use of time, develop worked attitude like self-
confidence, the department also should provide comfortable learning teaching situation for
the students like making awareness about network materials and required tools in computer
science to get enough knowledge and skills for network installation

CHAPTER-SIX
Evaluation and Critique
6.1 How Did The Internship Fit Our Career Goals At The Future?
Internship fit my career goals at the future during working time because during the timed
of summer field practice I have get a lot of experience advantage to future career. Out of
those advantaged the main thing is develop work attitude like self-confidence, be
confidential for work wisely and precisely and also it helps to affords the opportunity to
explore and verify career interests and competence in actual job situation, establish desirable
work habit and attitude while developing a sense of responsibility promote personal success
all the above points are those are gets from internship that are advantage for future career
goals during working time
Internship fit my career goals for the future by different aspects as we know internship is a
chance for a student who needs practical support. There for as I have support by this aspects
am guarantee for my future work and am really become responsible person. And as I have so
experienced by different scholars my hope or goals of future become full of confidence and
really am understand how to live with concerning social, economic and political aspects, so,
my goal of career become strong and strong.
6.2 Feeling about Internship
Internship makes me so glad! As I said internship is case for my glad because it is really
have crucial advantage for present as well as future aspects because it is a language of
invention or creating new things ,it is language of discovering ,it is language of being
become responsible person and it is language of work ethics,
In my summer field practice I have good feeling about the value of this internship because
internship has most important value starting from small thing like creating effective
communication up to for larger things advantage for future career goals. Generally internship
is most important practical work that will give for all department of computer science for all
3rd year student.
6.3 Recommendation to improving the internship
As I express in chapter five I am interested to recommends to our departments students to be
able to fast understand for new things, be confidential for their work wisely and precisely be
able to develop wise use of time, be able to understand each course effectively.
Let me recommends how internship should be for the future
 The university (ASU) industrial linkages should be create a linkage between the

17
Internship For Third Year Computer Science Student, Assosa University

students as well as the company it advisable that being keep the choice of the
students.
 The advisor of the students should be exists at the place of the company where the
students have got the company.
 The federal government or the university should pay enough or necessary money for
different activities during the required time.
 Organised the students in 1-5 policy still at the internship.
 The tittle of the internship should be specify for each group in order to minimise
repetition.
If those which I try to recommend from the above one the internship is much
interested for the future.
6.4 self-evaluation from the internship
In my internship (summer field practice) makes me to evaluate to myself and strength and
also it indicates my level of knowledge up to what range of knowledge because during
starting time of internship I have no confidence but now be confidential to do necessary
activity and internship makes me punctual on time generally internship make me to evaluate
myself in different activity.
