CHAPTER TWO

2. THE OVERALL INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

2.1. Objective of the Internship

2.1.1. General Objective of Internship

The general objective of our internship program is to develop our theoretical knowledge
through practice

2.1.2. Specific objective of Internship

 To expand knowledge through practice.
 To develop the ability of co-operation and work in group.
 To provide the chance to employ on that company after graduation.
 To introduce the real work environment and it is not be new after graduation.
 To understand real world problem and to get solution.

2.2. How I Get into the Company

The curriculum of the Bahir Dar University states that when the students of Institute of
Technology are 3rd year in second semester, they should be sent to the company to
accomplish the internship program. To facilitate the program, the university established
an independent office. This office is the university industry linkages (UIL) office. The
UIL facilitates and searches internship places for the interns as a preparation for
internship program. Several months before the internship semester, the UIL contacts
make links with different companies and organizations that are able to host the internship
program there by announcing the internship program. As an internship student, our
institute Bahir Dar University and the UIL office of ICT center gave me the chance to
work in the SNNPR CITA Company. Even though this chance is my personal effort to
get the company and I submitted the form to the company and they accepted me.the
process of finding organization is difficult because there is no strong and high agreement
between company and university. After getting the company, depending up on our raffle
in which I take incubation building assigned into network division.

6
2.3. The sections of the company I have been working

2.3.1. Networking section

I have been working in networking and system configuration section in our internship
period. Because this section is my favorite and I want to be network expert in the future
and also our country’s network building infrastructure is not enough at this time.so I
practiced network design sampling in SNNPR CITA Center In this company I have been
executing many tasks like:

 Cable crimping and color arrangement

 Switch and Router configuration
 Network designing for CITA

2.4. Types of Network

A. LAN (Local Area Network)

As I considered LAN implementing in network is necessary when the organization have

more than two networking devices, installing LAN in SNNPR ICT agency is critical
because there are many employees who work in different buildings on ICT development
such as software and web developers. These employees need internet for their work and
to share different devices such as printers and copy machines. So, by implementing
network on the agency many employees in one office can share a single printer and they
can use wired or wireless internet on their computer. A collection of computers, printers,
and other devices that can communicate with each other in a small area (< ~ 3000 m or
1000 feet).so

 Basic building block of any computer networks.

 Confined to limited geographic area, i.e. sharing a printer

LANs are designed to:-

 Operate within a limited geographic area

 Allow multi-access to high-bandwidth media
 Control the network privately under local administration
 Provide full-time connectivity to local services

7
 Connect physically adjacent devices

B. WAN (Wide Area Network)

 Has no geographical limit.

 Made up of a number of interconnected LANs.

E.g. The internet

2.4.1. Some Network Devices

I have seen some of the network devices that useful for networking area. These devices
are different functions some are listed below

A. Servers

It is the networking devices used to store information, instruction and data as RAM and
distributes for the wanted ones. Server provides services to the other programs or users
either in the same computer or over a computer network.

Figure 3: server

B. Routers

Router is the networking device works under networking layer of OSI model used to
connect two or more different LAN networks. As we know before, the main function of
the router is used to network configuration. Router is the network device that directs
information from one location to another by using specific IP address.

 Interconnect LANs and WANs

 Provide path determination using metrics
 Forward packets from one network to another
8
 Control broadcasts to the network

Figure 4: Router

C. Switches

It is a multicast networking device works under data link layer of OSI model that
connects brunch of computer or devices in a network. A networking switch (sometimes
known as a switching hub) is a computer networking device that is used to connect many
devices together on a computer network.

 Use bridging technology to forward traffic between ports.

 Provide full dedicated data transmission rate between two stations that are
directly connected to the switch ports.

Figure 5: Switch

2.5. What I done?

 Punching, Crimping UTP CAT6 cable.
 Observing the overall network design and the interconnection of Cisco device in
datacenter.
 Switch Configuring.

2.5.1. Some Network Materials (toolkits) I used

Network toolkits are set of devices which used for network installation and maintenance.
This toolkit contains devices such as:

9
 Crimper
 Cutter
 UTP cable
 Tester
 Puncher
 Splicer
 Screw driver
 Patch panel
 RJ-45 etc….

Figure 6: network toolkits

2.6. Physical activities I performed in the organizations

During the internship I had been learning about networking and also I practiced what I
had learnt using real networking devices. The skill and knowledge I gained from this
internship were like: -

 Crimping cable:

 Cable crimping is attaching the cable with the appropriate

connector such as RJ45 which is required to connect devices with
each other like patch panel and access switch.

A crimping tool is a device used to join two pieces of metal by deforming one or both of
them in a way that causes them to hold each other. Network cables are used to connect
and transfer data and information between computers, switches and storage area
networks. There are several types of cable which are commonly used with LANs.

10
Figure 7: crimper

Cabling is divided into two major parts:-

1. Straight through
2. Crossover

Straight through cabling is a type of twisted pair cable that is used in local area
networks to connect a computer to hubs or switches. Use straight through Ethernet cable
for cabling switch to PC or server and switch to router.

Cross over cabling is commonly used to connect device of the same type like computer
to computer. The RJ45 crossover cable use different wiring standards: one end uses the
T568A wiring standard and the other end uses the T568B wiring standard. Use crossover
cable for the following cabling:-

 Switch to switch,
 Router to router and PC to PC.

Pin Wire color Straight through Cross-over

1 White orange White orange White green
2 Orange Orange Green
3 White green White green White orange
4 Blue Blue Blue
5 White blue White blue White orange
6 Green Green Orange
7 White brown White brown White brown
8 Brown Brown Brown
Table 1: Straight through and cross-over color of cable arrangement

11
Color coding is the arranging of eight color of the optic fiber cables according to their
desires straight through and crosses over cabling and aligns to the RJ-45 slots.

Figure 8 : Color coding

 UTP Cable
It is certainly the most popular type of network cable by far around the world.
UTP cable is used not only for networking, but also for the traditional telephone
UTPCAT1. There are six different types of UTP categories. UTP-CAT5e is the
most popular UTP cable; it replaced the old coaxial cable that was unable to keep
up with the constantly growing nee. Faster and more reliable networks. The
characteristics of UTP are very good and make it easy to work with, install,
expand and troubleshoot. Mostly used not more than 100 meters.

Figure 9: UTP Cable

 Registered jack-45 (RJ45)

In wired networks, the most common form of cable connector is the RJ45. Every
computer with networking capabilities has an RJ45 port. This is sometimes called a

12
"network port" or an "Ethernet port." connects the Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) or the
Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) cable. Registered jack-45 (RJ45) refers to a cable
termination specification that specifies physical male and female connectors and the pin
assignments of wires-in telephone cables and other networks that use RJ45 connections.

Figure 10: Registered jack-45

 Punching Patch panel

Patch panel is a device which has 8 up to 24 ports just like switch. The cable comes from
the wall outlet will be punched on the patch panel instead of switch and the patch panel
will be connected with the switch with short (20cm) UTP cable. The cable will be
punched in the patch panel using a device puncher. All switches will have Patch panel in
the network and the advantage of having patch panel is cable management and stability of
the network.

Figure 11: patch panel

 Wall outlet :
 Wall outlet is a material attached with a wall which has a port to
connect with a cable to provide access for end users in the office.
 It includes:
 Face plate
 Kinston jack
 Box

13
 Fisher
 Screw
 The cable either comes from the patch panel or access switch will
be punched (connected) with the Kinston jack in the wall outlet.
 The wall outlet will be attached to a wall by using a screw.
 Finally, we can get broadband Ethernet access through the wall
outlet.

Figure 12: wall outlet attaching to UTP cable

2.6. Resources Tools & software Used

I used some tools and software in the network design and installation when prepared to
project and document. Those tools and software are:

 Microsoft office Visio s/w (for network design drawing).

 Measurement meter.
 Laptop or personal computer.
 Internet Access.
 Note book and pen/pencil.
 Network toolkit.
 MS office word for document preparation

2.7. Procedures I Have Been Using

14
 First, I come on time what our company given to me, as punctuality is the basic
thing.
 I listen what our advisor told to us
 I use the materials they gave to us in properly and wisely way.
 By asking questions what are makes confusion in our mind.

2.8. My Performance at the agency

I have been executing as a trainer on networking, server and executing some works such
as:

 Discussing on networking problems and giving solutions.

 Checking the software installing properly.
 Asking assistant any problem that is about networking.
 Cleaning our hands before touching or maintaining any electronics device.
 Attending on time.
 Asking questions what is unclear.
 Participating in a group discussion
 Respecting our trainers

2.9. Challenge I faced during internship and consequence of the challenge

At the occasion of my field practice faced some of the challenges I listed below:

 Expansion was required due to new staff members.

 No enough time and there is limitation of resources or materials.
 There is no computer laboratory to get internet access to refer online with my
work.
 Transportation.
 Internet connection wasn’t available for two weeks.
 Sometimes the advisors were busy.
 Whether condition was summer at the internship time so, the rain is difficult to
arrive on time.
 Power fluctuation problem.

15
 Supervisor was busy for continuous two weeks in meeting.so, it affect my
practical activities.
 Sometimes assigned staff members do not attend on time
 Due to Covid-19 it is difficult to discuss in a group
 Difficult to talk with out wearing a mask

2.10. The measures taken to overcome the challenges

I lost most of my time trying to fix these problems. I tried to use appropriate techniques
which I gained from the assigned advisor and instructor. Even if the challenge was
difficult, I was able to challenge the problem by the following mechanism.

 By peer to peer discussion.

 By helping one another and by tolerance
 Due to lack of time we assigned reserve trainer
 Assigning only 14 students in one section
 Assigning 5 students once in a practical section.
 Wearing mask properly

2.11. Conclusion and recommendation for practical skills

Recommendation

In order to done these tasks we wait one week why because the company’s materials
store keeper has been went to other place. I wanted to recommend the company to assign
additional employee in order to be fast activities to be performed for customers and
trainers.

Conclusion

I had done some basic networking practical skills by doing the above activities like
crimping, testing, panching and other activites.so it is important to converting theoretical
knowledge to practical skills. I gained money basic practical skills.

CHAPTER THREE

3. BENEFITS OF THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

3.1. Gain Work Experience
There are so many benefits which I gained from the internship program. As an intern I
have the opportunity to apply acquired knowledge to real work experiences witnessing
firsthand day to day job duties I expect to encounter in my field. The most and main
benefits that I got from internship were as follows: -

punctuality
communication skills
This internship used as to apply the theoretical to the real life situation. And also
gives a chance to see, understand and exercise the real life situation in work.
Teamwork with employees or other interns
Computer proficiency

17
3.2. In Terms of Improving our Practical Skill

During the intern the most beneficiary thing is that upgrading of practical knowledge that
I earned their theoretical in the class. Most of the courses that I had earned theoretically
are highly applicable in what I have been working in, and so I have got a chance to relate
the theory with practical knowledge. Before the internship, my practical knowledge of
learned theories was limited. Despite the educational preparation of a student, class
assignments and projects were to be done by only short period deadlines. This
methodology had limited considerably the scope which I might learn from the tasks. As
the evaluations in campus are one-or-two-exams-based, I was focused merely on class
lectures and few exercises. Unlike the projects I did at campus, the projects I had found
throughout the internship period were based on real-life problems. As it has been
aforementioned in the company background, there were many active projects being done
in the company.

3.3. Upgrading the Theoretical knowledge

The contribution of the internship program is not only for practical also it upgrades my
theoretical knowledge. And it increases the ability to apply systematic design procedure
to open ended problem. And how to analyses something technically. So it upgrades my
theoretical knowledge the same as the practical one. Also Internship memorizes the
important conceptual theoretical parts that have learned. This theoretical knowledge is
upgraded to the finest version of knowledge which is better than on paper knowledge
because I can connect them to the practical knowledge or skill. Our internship experience
seems to have obvious significance in upgrading our theoretical knowledge. Generally,
each and every movement needs the theoretical background.

3.4. Improving Interpersonal Skills

This skill is very important for every person to smooth the relation between the co-
workers. Due to this reason we develop such skills in a good manner like: - a) the ability
to speak clearly and confidentially.

The ability to listen and understand others (co-workers).

The ability giving a solution for a problem.

18
This internship helped me work up my personal behavior corresponding to social
interaction. Throughout the internship, I could develop professional contacts. Now, I
understand these contacts may be able to help me in the future by acting as a reference
for another company, or assist in securing full-time employment within their company.

3.5. Improving Team Playing Skills

Among the most important skills that I developed during the intern are our
communication and working together team sprit skill. In our agency all of the workers’
are sociable. Most of the time we discuss about the works and other related issues wisely.
During the internship there were many job responsibilities that I have been done with the
worker’s. So I have learned the following points from them:-

I understood that the knowledge of a team is stronger than an individual.

Responsible and open-minded to other points of view.
Listening to the idea of others whatever it is.
Be flexible rather than rigid for new concepts and changes

3.6. In Terms of Improving Leadership Skill

When I was working some tasks in the organization, our supervisor gave us from one
person in our groups. Person who takes the leadership from us was organize us,
accordingly as our advisor manage us. The leadership in the organization consists of the
following items: -

Punctuality
Commitment to work
Keeping the secret, rule and regulation of the organization
Responsibility and etc.

3.7. In Terms of Understanding Work Ethics & Related Issues

The benefit of the internship program was interesting in improving ethical work habit.
Although it is difficult to memorize all benefits that are gained about work ethics, it is
important to mention the following:-

19
Be on time at work and leave work by the right time (punctuality)
Sense of responsibility
Sense of accountability and Tolerance

3.8. In Terms of Developing Entrepreneurship Skill

Entrepreneurship is the act of entrepreneur, which can be defined as one who under takes
innovation, finance and business in an effort to transform innovations into economic
goods. I want to able and develop the most important entrepreneurship characteristics and
skills that I never had before.

Those are the entrepreneurship characteristics that I never had before are as follows: -

4. NETWORK DESIGN AND INSTALLATION OF INCUBATION

BUILDING CITB

4.1. Summary of the project

This project is mainly targeted on incubation building for SNNPR SIT bureau network
installation to have fast network process management, and it also support the wireless
service around the buildings and the device used like mobile smart phone, tablet, laptop,
desktop and wireless printer, to increase the security of information in the bureau. The
scope of this project is to design network and install both physical and logical design by
studying the existing network installation. Firstly, we study & draw both existing
physical and logical design and next we propose new physical and logical design and also
calculating the cost of material lists for those projects. And finally I conclude the project.

4.2. Statement of the problem
There are some issues I observed which are considering as problem in the incubation
building (LAN) of the agency network design and installation. These problems are:

 No firewall in the network so the network may be exposed to attack by

hackers.

 No UPS for the access switches which may cause power problem.

 There is one core switch. There is redundant link between the switches, but
there is only one core switch which is not fault tolerant.

 Some of the wall out let is not working

 The bandwidth is not satisfying regarding the number of users.

4.3. Objective of the project

4.3.1. General objective
The general objective of this project is to make a design and upgraded
scalable (by twice of the current capability of the network) and valuable
LAN network service with high speed internet connection for one of the
incubation building in the organization.

4.3.2. Specific objective

Design the scalable LAN network for the increasing number of user
Improve and consolidate network performance at SITB.
Improve the networks fault tolerance, security and high speed connection.
To understand and upgrade the existing local area network (LAN) and its
installation.
To design fastest network depending on the increasing number of user and
devices.
Identify the critical points of failure in the existing network and propose
on how to eliminate them
Distribute internet across all offices in the building.
Building a computer network in the agency that reduces the time and
money spent.

21
4.4. Methodology of the Project
4.4.1. Physical network design and installation
Design requirement must be pre-defined the following terms:-

Survey organization building arrangement based on four directional structures

From those we select the incubation building.
Draft/ sketches the building within the organization.
Measure and draw each room of the building.
Put the appropriate location of stores and toilets without measurement even if out of
the network installation.
Taking measurement for each room as well as corridors carefully and accurately.
Write the number of nodes in the room and department name for each working
rooms.
If the room wall is rectangular only measure two sides, otherwise all sides are not
equal taking measurement for both sides.
After that collecting necessary data/information, put the network design using Visio
software on the computer.
Then we draw on Visio application software as outline as real taking measurement.

4.4.3. Logical Design

25
A logical design is virtual design involves arranging data into a series of logical
relationships. Hierarchal network involves three division of layer. These are access layer,
distribution layer and core layer.
The hierarchical design model has three basic layers:
 Core layer: Connects distribution layer devices
 Distribution layer: Interconnects the smaller local networks
 Access layer: Provides connectivity for network hosts and end devices

4.4.3.1. Current logical design

27
4.4.3.3. Proposed LAN infrastructure

In the proposed LAN infrastructure, there is tele network comes from tele which
is connected with the 2 routers using 2 epon bridges and these routers will be
connected with a firewall which have 8 ports.

The firewall is used to protect the network from outside attack as well as to give
and deny privilege or access for employees in the agency.
The firewall is then connected with the two core switches and this core switches
will be connected with each other.
There is a server connected with the switch and there is UPS for the server.
We use two core switches rather than one because when failure happens in one
core switch users or employees can access the network using the other core
switch. If we use two core switches we can get high performance seed of internet
access and also reduce load balance of core switches. Both core switches are
connected with all four access switches.
There are two wireless access points one in hall room and the other one is in
The incubation room 1.
In the proposed LAN infrastructure, there are 61 nodes. These nodes include
computers, printers and laptops. These nodes access the network via the access
switches placed one in hall room, one in room 2 and one in incubation room 4.
All switches have patch panel and UPS.

4.5. Cost of Material List

Table listed below deals about Quantity of materials with their cost. Hence we are
proposed the existing network design and studying their Quantity and their cost.
Finally, we calculated the total cost.

4.6. Configuration of router and switch using VLAN

After, finishing the network design LAN of the building the supervisor gave us
sample project on cisco in order to configure network devices. Then I have done basic
configuration using cisco software device. Those basic configurations are using
switch and router devices on VLAN networks. This sample project looks like in the
figure below:

4.7. Conclusion and recommendation

Conclusion

This project work was good.it is important to understand the physical design and logical
design for installation of network in our country.so I gained some knowledge about
installation of network design and I will grow up in the future by this sector. We solve
some organization problems by doing this project.

Reason and suggestion for unsolved problems

The problems require budget to be solved. I did project in group about our proposed idea
during the internship which can solve the above-mentioned problems. So I suggest using
our proposed idea to solve the problems.

33
CHAPTER FIVE

5. GENERAL CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

5.1. Conclusion

This internship program helps me to understand and know in detail about networking. I
learn in detail about all network devices and how to use them during network installation.
After taking this internship I have known all steps and I got technical knowledge to
install and maintain a LAN network in real world.

And also in this internship program I developed experience in team working and I have
learned about good conduct and work ethics such as punctuality, politeness and give
respect for others.

Taking this internship program helps me to apply my knowledge in real world

environment which makes me productive and competitive in my working place after i
graduate. In addition to this this internship improves my skill of team playing and
obeying work ethics in my work place.

5.1. Recommendation

SNNPR CITA is an organization which gives great concern for ICT development. The
good thing is that accepting and training university students in internship program is one
of the tasks carried out by the agency. So I recommend them to continue this task and
give more attention and support for internship students. But during our internship time
the agency give us the practical knowledge about networking by giving us network
devices for training and projects to do for network installation. So I recommend the
agency employees who work in network installation and maintenance across the state to

34
take students when they work inside and around the town to work and learn with them in
addition to the above stated training.

My final recommendation for the organization is that there are some drawbacks on the
area of networking stated above in “problems observed” section. So I recommend them to
see our project proposal we did during the internship and solve those problems according
to our project.

In addition to the organization I would like to recommend the university to provide

networking laboratory and purchase network devices such as routers, core switches,
access switches and others; and give technical or practical knowledge about networking.
As we have seen the university pays hundreds of thousands for student’s internship
program per year. But if the university provides networking laboratory and materials
required for practical training, we can gain practical knowledge about what we have
learned in class in addition to the internship.

Finally I recommend the university to try to increase the duration of the internship period
because in my opinion 2 month is not enough to gain all technical knowledge about ICT
areas. One can gain more skill if he/she spent more time in internship.
