Whos To Blame

This document discusses reasons for the Democrats' losses in the 2010 midterm elections. It argues that blaming President Obama for not adequately dealing with economic problems is a false statement. Instead, the document claims the losses were due to a lack of promotion by Democratic candidates and a lack of voters, particularly young and African American voters, who turned out in lower numbers than in 2008. The author believes more outreach on college campuses and urban areas could have improved voter turnout for Democrats.

Who’s To Blame?

Blame Game 2

Many people are saying that: Obama and the democrats lost the election, because

the president did not adequately deal with the economic problems and loss of jobs. I

believe that this quote is not true. I believe that what the President Obama’s

downfall where not the reasons why people did not come out to vote. According to

the Washington Post, “He [President Obama] conceded that his relationship with the

American people "has gotten rockier and tougher" over the last two years during

difficult times following an "incredible high" at the time of his election.” However

Obama has to first fix the problems that President Bush had then he can go on to do

what he has planned to do for the American people. Many Americans do understand

that it will not take a day or even two years for him to fix what all the problems.

With that said, I believe that the democrats lost big in the mid-term elections

because the same voters for President Obama, and it were not enough promotion.

Many of the democrats running had in their minds that they could easily win

if they had the same turn-out that President Obama had. President Obama had a

great turn-out with African-American voters and young voters. During the mid-

term election many African-Americans or young people did not vote. Many

democrats were counting on both groups, although they lacked with their

promotion of the elections. E.J. Dionne Junior says, “What hurt them most was this

brute fact: Voters younger than 30 made up 18 percent of the electorate in 2008 but

only about half that on Tuesday, according to network exit polls (2010).” This quote

shows that people under 30 had an impact on the polls of November 2 nd elections.
Blame Game 3

Many Americans especially those who do not read the paper or look at the

news, did not know about the mid-term elections. I believe that candidates should

have visited more urban areas and college/university’s campuses to get people

aware of the mid-term elections. “Without question, President Obama has the right

vision and the best plan to move America forward but the Democratic National

Committee must do better in helping him get his message out to the people,

particularly Black people, to ensure that we are inspired to vote,” says the

Huffington Post. If the candidates would of did better promotion, possibly the turn-

out for more democrats would have been better. Even the President himself did not

go on tours until the week or two before the mid-term elections.

Obama and the democrats lost the election because the president did not

adequately deal with the economic problems and loss of jobs; I believe this is a false

statement. I would not blame the President, but the lack of promotion and the lack

of the same voters had to do with why the democrats did not win big in the mid-

term elections.
