Keeping cool in
summer heat
With the region firmly in summer’s grip,
the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority
wants everyone to know the signs of a heat emergency.

Early Symptoms
Heat Illness
 Profuse swea ng
 Fa gue
 Thirst
Later Symptoms
 Muscle cramps
Heat Exhaustion
 Headache
 Dizziness and light‐headedness
 Weakness
 Nausea and vomi ng Heatstroke Symptoms
A much more serious condition
 Cool, moist skin
 Dark urine  Fever (temperature above 104°F)
FIRST AID  Irra onal behavior
 Dry, hot and red skin
1.  Have the person lie down in a cool place. Elevate the person’s feet 
 Rapid, shallow breathing
about 12 inches.   Rapid, weak pulse
2.  Remove from sunlight and cool slowly, remove clothing and place   Seizures
person in air‐condi oned or shaded loca on.   Unconsciousness
3.  Apply cool, wet cloths to the skin and use a fan to lower body 
temperature. Place cold compresses on neck, groin and armpits. 

4.  Give the pa ent, if alert, sips of cool water or ice chips. 

5.  For muscle cramps, give water as above and massage affected 
muscles gently but firmly un l they relax. 

6.  If the person (1) shows signs of shock (bluish lips and fingernails  Emergency, Dial 911.


and decreased alertness), (2) starts having seizures or (3) loses  Non Emergency
consciousness, call 911 and administer first‐aid accordingly.   304.342.1107
