“100 Deadliest Days” Crashes
▪ The period of time from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend has been
characterized by safety officials as the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer.” During these summer
months, the expected traffic volume increase brings with it corresponding increases in vehicular
crashes and deaths.
▪ During this period in 20211, 74,961 crashes occurred on Ohio’s roadways. Among these crashes
were 400 fatal crashes that resulted in 434 fatalities. Nearly one-third of fatal crashes reported in
2021 occurred over these 100 days.
▪ Thirty-eight percent (38%) of all crashes during the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer” occurred in
Cuyahoga (8,955), Hamilton (8,586), Franklin (6,687), or Lucas (4,070) Counties.
▪ These 100 days encompass the primary motorcycle riding months. In 2021, nearly half of all
motorcycle-involved crashes occurred during this time period. While motorcycle-involved crashes
made up less than 3% of all crashes during these 100 days, they comprised about 32% of fatal
crashes (127 crashes resulting in 134 fatalities).
