OVI-RELATED CRASHES
 In 2017, 14,481 OVI-related1 crashes occurred on Ohio roadways resulting in 405 deaths and 8,848
injuries. This is a small decrease from 2016 when 14,506 crashes occurred. OVI-related crashes
accounted for 35% of all fatal crashes in Ohio in 2017. Over the last five years, 36% of fatal crashes
have been OVI-related.

 In 2017, drivers aged 21-39 were at-fault in 55% of OVI-related crashes in Ohio while underage drivers
(15-20) were at-fault in another 6%. A male driver was at-fault in 71% of OVI-related crashes. The
leading cause of OVI-related crashes in 2017 was a failure to control the vehicle (39% of crashes).

 According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 10,874 people were killed
nationwide in alcohol-related crashes in 2017,2 about one death every 48 minutes. In 68% of alcohol-
impaired driving fatalities, at least one driver involved had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) at or
above 0.15 g/dL, although every state makes it illegal to drive with a BAC at or above 0.08 g/dL.
OSHP OVI CITATIONS
 In 2017, OSHP troopers issued 27,372 citations for OVI, more than 8% higher than 2016. Troopers have
written an average of 25,232 OVI citations per year over the last 5 years (2013-2017).
 Male drivers were the recipients of 73% of OVI citations written. Fifty-nine percent (59%) of OVI
citations were issued between midnight and 4:00 a.m.; More than half (54%) of all OVI arrests were
made between 5:00 p.m. Friday and 5:00 a.m. Sunday.
