Brief histories from 1925 to the present of the routes and operators of private bus services in the
metropolitan area of Sydney, NSW, Australia

This list shows private bus routes and their operators as at 1 January 1960, when the post-World War II population boom
had resulted in Sydney’s suburbs expanding to the south, west and north of the CBD and many new private bus routes had
started to serve the new suburbs. The growth in private bus routes after 1945 can be judged by those noted as
“Commenced post-WWII”.

Of note also is the large number of operators – over 120 – many of them small independents with small fleets. Since
1960, the number of operators has dwindled dramatically.

Further details of each route are given in the Route Histories. All private bus routes in this list are numbered in the 1925
route number system.
