My passion in Dance Education has allowed me to mentor many young girls of color in

the City of Milwaukee. I began dancing at 5 years old with a Christian-based dance
company named Signature Dance Company. My passion has led me to opportunities
such as dance-industry experience and a Full scholarship to Debbie Allen's Dance
Academy Los Angeles Summer Intensive which I was not able to attend because of
Covid-19. I would like to continue to perfect my craft and pursue my passion for dance
and choreography for the rest of my life. Dance has allowed me to grow into a more
confident black woman, improve my mental and emotional health, and start necessary
conversations in the community. Many young girls, especially girls of color struggle with
the feeling of not being good enough and many don’t even have access to opportunities
to express their talents. I am blessed to have learned and continue to learn dance from
strong African American women in my company because they forced me to leave my
comfort zone, work for what I wanted, and become the performer I have dreamt to be.
I would like to become that same advocate for young girls. I would like to help them
grow not only in dance, but mentally and emotionally as well. I have struggled with
depression and anxiety for years. These issues are not well addressed in minority
communities. Dance and the support from black role models have been the biggest help
in my journey of overcoming my struggle. I know that if other girls of color have the
same access to this form of therapy, then many will be able to overcome their struggle
as well. I also teach my students that dance is an opportunity to start necessary
conversations such as mental health, racial injustice, and other everyday obstacles. As
dancers, we have a responsibility to creatively let our voices be heard and create
change. Education in dance will allow me to provide the best training possible to the
young women I teach which they will need when working in the dance industry. I would
also like to study at University of California- Los Angeles not only for the academics, but
also for the experience. Living in Los-Angeles California will allow me to continue to
grow as a dancer, gain opportunities, and experience the world. The more I experience,
the more I can pass on to the dancers I teach.
