Electric and Water Readings
          Mr. Tan is computing his monthly electrical
  consumption. Based on his electric bill, last month he was
  able to consume 00125 kWh. When he checked his digital
  electric meter, the reading is 00199 kWh. How many
  kilowatt-hours did Mr. Tan consume this month?
Read the meter readings below.

For us to get the amount of electricity that Mr. Dela Cruz
consumed, subtract the previous electric meter reading from
the present electric meter reading.
                    00199 – 00125 = 74 kWh
So, Mr. Tan consumed 74 kWh of electricity for this month.

       Your electric meter measures the amount of electricity you
use. Just as you purchase kilograms of meat, grams of milk or
liters of gasoline, you buy kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity.
                            Reading Electric Meter
      In an electromechanical meter, you will notice that there are
five dials and inside each is a pointer which indicates the
number to be read. The pointers will alternately turn clockwise
                              and counterclockwise             .
These dials measure the number of kilowatt-hour (kWh) you use in
1s, 10s, 100s, 1000s, and 10 000s.
Reading Electric Meters
     To read electric meters:
     1. Always read all the dials from right to left starting from
        Dial E to Dial A.
     2. Read the numbers by the pointer of the dial. When the
        pointer is between the two numbers the lower number
        is recorded.
     3. The pointer appears to be exactly on a number, check
        the dial to the right to find out the correct reading.
          If the dial on the right has passed zero, then use the
            number the pointer is pointing on the dial you are
            reading.
          If the dial has not passed zero, then make use of
            the smaller number on the dial you are reading.

    The illustration shows the following meter reading on each
    dial:
    Dial E: The pointer is directly on number 4. Record as 4.
    Dial D: The pointer has just passed 9 and is between 9 and 0.
            Record as 9.
    Dial C: The next dial has passed 7 and is between 7 and 8.
           Again record the smaller number which is 7.
    Dial B: The pointer looks like it is right on 4 but, the dial to
           its right has not passed zero. So, you would record
           this as 3.
    Dial A: The pointer is between 5 and 6. Record the smaller
           number which the pointer just passed, which is 5.
Example 1. Read and interpret the dials on the electric meter
           below.

Example 2: Read and interpret the dials on the meter below.

        READING A WATER METER
              The older style of water meters is those with small dials.
        It looks like a series of small clocks that turn clockwise
        (see picture below). The unit we use for this
        measurement is cubic meters (m3). The rules of reading a
        water meter with dials are like the way an electric meter is
        being read.
        To read water meters:
          1.Start reading from right to left (clockwise). Read the
            number by the pointer of the dial. When the pointer
            is between two numbers, the lower number is
            recorded.
          2.When the pointer is directly on the number, look at the
            dial to the right. If it has passed zero, use the next higher
            number. If the dial has not passed zero, use the lower
            number.
          3.Record the numbers from right to left.

Example 4: Read and interpret the dials on the meter below. The
          rightmost dial has the highest value.
         To get the exact meter reading, start from the right to
         left or the highest numbered dial (clockwise).
         So, the water meter shows 3518 m3.
         Today, most households use a water meter with
         odometer to measure the amount of water
         consumption. See the picture at the right.
Example 5.
         Jose made a record of their 3-month             electric
         consumptions. The initial reading is 973 kWh.
         January: 1120      February: 1353       March: 1512

Assume that the basic charge for the first 30 kWh is
₱120.00 and the succeeding kilowatt-hour is charge
₱6.00.
a. How much will Jose pay for each month?
b. In what month did he pay the most? The least?
c. What is the average monthly consumption?
UNDERSTAND:
a. What is asked?
   The consumption that Jose will pay for each month
    of electricity they consumed.
   The month with the highest and lowest electricity bill.
   The average monthly consumption.
b. What are the given facts?
  The initial reading is 973 kWh.
  January, February, and March readings are
   1120kWh, 1353kWh, and 1512kWh, respectively.
  The basic charge for the first 30 kWh is ₱120.00 and
   the next kilowatt-hour is charge ₱6.00.
PLAN: What operations shall we use to solve the
     problem? Select your own strategy.
      To get the amount that Jose will pay for each
month: subtract the initial reading from first month’s
reading. For the following month, subtract the previous
month’s reading from the current month’s reading.
Then, to get the amount Jose will pay for, subtract 30
kWh from the monthly kWh consumption, then multiply
the result by
₱6.00. Afterwards, add the amount for the first 30 kWh
which is ₱120.00.
      To get the average monthly consumption, get
the total consumption for three months then divide it by

Solve: Show the computation.
a. To get every month’s electric consumption:
      January: 1120 – 973 = 147 kWh
      February: 1353 – 1120 = 232 kWh
      March: 1512 – 1353 = 159 kWh
     Now, to get the amount for each monthly
     consumption with the conditions that the first
     30 kWh is ₱120.00 and ₱6.00 per remaining
     kilowatt- hour. That is,
     January: 147 kWh      120 + [(147 - 30) x 6]
               120 + [(147 - 30) x 6] = 120 + (117 x 6)
                                      = 120 + 702
                                      = ₱822.00
     So, for January he will pay ₱822.00.
     February: 232 kWh      120 + [(232 – 30) x 6]
               120 + [(232 – 30) x 6] = 120 + (202 x 6)
                                      = 120 + 1212
                                      = ₱1,332.00
     So, for February he will pay ₱1,332.00.
     March: 159 kWh       120 + [(159 – 30) x 6]
              120 + [(159 – 30) x 6] = 120 + (129 x 6)
                                     = 120 + 774
                                     = ₱894.00
     So, for February he will pay ₱894.00.
b. See computation (a). The month with the highest
   (most) electricity consumption was February with 232
   kWh consumption. They consumed the least amount
   of electricity on the month of January with 147 kWh.
c. The computation below shows the average
   monthly consumption.

   Average monthly consumption =               538

                                    ≈ 179.33

          So, the average monthly electricity consumption is
          approximately 179.33 kWh.
          Answer: The following are the answers to the questions:
           a. He will pay ₱822.00, ₱1,332.00, ₱894.00 for the month of
              January, February, and March, respectively.
           b. The month with the highest (most) electricity
              consumption was in February. They consumed least
              amount of electricity on the month of January.
           c. The average monthly consumption is approximately
              179.33 kWh.
          Check: Check you answer. This is one way on how to
                 check if your answer is correct.
                  Go back to your computation, check if all
                  given values are properly used about the
                  given condition especially for computing the
                  amounts.
Example 6: Jose’s record of their water consumption is as follows:
                  Initial Reading: 0114
          January: 0256        February: 0459         March: 0651
          a. On what month did he use most water?
          b. How many cubic meters of water did they use for
             3 months?
          c. Solve the average monthly consumption in cubic
             meters.
          UNDERSTAND:
          a. What are asked?
              The month which they used the most amount of
               water.
              The total amount of water (in cubic meters)
               consumed within 3 months periods.
              The average monthly consumption (in cubic
               meters).

     What operations shall we use to solve the problem?
  Select your own strategy. There are three questions in
  the problem. You may use the following method to
  solve each question.
 a. Find the amount of water they consumed every
    month by subtracting the initial reading from the
    first month’s reading, then the previous month’s
    reading from the current month’s reading, and so
    on to identify the month which they used the most
    water.
 b.To get the total amount of water consumed, add
   all the water consumption for three months.
 c. To get the average monthly consumption, divide the
    total (from b) by 3, the number of months covered.
SOLVE: Show the computation.
a. Having an initial reading of 0114, so the water
   consumption for each month is:

    1. Electricity is measured in kilowatt-hour. An electric meter is
       used to measure how much electricity is consumed.
    2. Water is measured by a water meter that works like a
       speedometer in cars. The unit of measure is the cubic
       meter, written as m3.
