1. Describe what kind of superior or leader Coach Carter is.

● From what I have analyzed from the movie, Coach Carter shows this sort of
democratic type of leadership. He encourages the players to participate with an
emphasis on both tasks and development of people. He encourages them on
both education, sportsmanship, discipline and dedication to winning basketball
games and getting into college. Coach Carter envisioned each player achieving
far more than they could ever imagine. As a team he had made them suffer the
triumph and defeat together. Carter had a positive outcome and influence on one
another and most importantly he encouraged everyone to work at their full
potential.
2. Apply the stages of group development using the story line of the film Coach Carter
a. Forming - This stage was shown in the basketball team when Coach Carter sets
new aims and ground rules by challenging their punctuality and respect for him
as their new leader. He also stresses the importance of education and that until
they start attending lessons they are not allowed to train in the basketball team.

b. Storming - In the film some members of the basketball team attempted to

establish themselves by aggressive verbal communication and violent behavior
towards Coach Carter.

c. Norming - This stage was shown in the team where they all work together and
start to enjoy training and competing in games. “The team needs to be focussed
on its goals… and there is general respect for the leader”. This is shown as
Coach Carter’s earlier aims are accomplished as they start to comply with how
he leads the team which shows a respectful attitude towards him. They also
attend all their lessons so that they are able to be on the team.

d. Performing - This is where conflicts are easily resolved often without the
intervention of the leader and people know their place in the team so are able to
work together efficiently. This is shown in a disagreement in a basketball game
which is dealt with and the team moves on from it.
e. Adjourning - This is where successes and achievements are recognised and the
team can look back on how far they’ve progressed from the beginning. Although
the basketball team did not win the final game in the film, all of the players reflect
on their changes such as respect in relationships and for authority. Coach Carter
looked back on the changes he has helped make to the boys’ character and how
the team has evolved.

3. Choose two characters in the film and explain what kind of self-interest behavior they
have. Justify your answer.
● The first one that I will mention is Timo Cruz who is a young, troubled teeager
who has had no good role models in his life. However, Timo does have a
character development throughout the film and changes his attitude towards
Coach Carter. When Timo witnesses his cousin Renny being shot, the first
person he sees turns to Coach Carter and says that he wants to come back on
the team. He begs to come back on the team and states he will do anything to
have his place back. This signals Timo’s change and then throughout the rest of
the film Timo works hard to achieve at school and at basketball. He is also very
keen to please Coach Carter and his team. Timo is the character in the film who
grows rapidly in a positive direction.
● Next character is Damien Carter, Coach Carter’s son. Damien Carter switched
basketball teams to Richmond basketball when his father became the coach; he
stated that he wanted to change teams as his dad has always coached him. As a
leader Damien Carter helps to keep the team motivated during games by
keeping communication going, when they are losing he will help pick up the
spirits of his other team members.
