Since water is the basis of life, composing the greater part of the tissues of all living things,
the crucial problem of desert animals is to survive in a world where sources of flowing water are
rare. And since man’s inexorable necessity is to absorb large quantities of water at frequent
intervals, he can scarcely comprehend that many creatures of the desert pass their entire lives
without a single drop. Uncompromising as it is, the desert has not a limited life but only those
forms unable to withstand its desiccating effects. No moist skinned, water-loving animals can exist
there. Few large animals are found. The giants of the North American desert are the deer, the
coyote, and the bobcat. Since desert country is open, it holds more swift-footed running and leaping
creatures than the tangled forest. Its population is largely nocturnal, silent, filled with reticence, and
ruled by stealth. Yet they are not emaciated. Having adapted to their austere environment, they are
as healthy as animals anywhere else in the world. The secret of their adjustment lies in the
combination of behavior and physiology. None could survive, like mad dogs and Englishmen, if
they went out in the midday sun; many would die in a matter of minutes. So most of them pass the
burning hours asleep in cool, humid burrows underneath the ground, emerging to hunt only by
night. The surface of the sun-baked desert averages around 150 degrees, but 18 inches down the
temperature is only 60 degrees.

be seen from great distances across the Los Angeles basin.
The sign was not constructed, as one might suppose, by the movie business as a means of
celebrating the importance of Hollywood to this industry; instead, it was first constructed in 1923 as
means of advertising homes for sale in a 500 – acre-housing subdivision in a part of Los Angeles
called “Hollywood land”. The sign that was constructed at time, of course, said “Hollywood land”.
Over the years, people began referring to the area by the shorten version “Hollywood” and after the
sign and its site were donated to the city in 1945, the last four letters were removed.
The sign suffered for years of disrepair, and in 1973, it needed to be completely replaced, at
a cost of $ 27,700 per letter. Various celebrities were instrumental in helping to raise needed funds.
Rock star Alice Cooper, for example, bought an O in memory of Groucho Marx, and Hugh Hefner

IV. (5pts) Read the passage and check T/ F for each statement below.
The Digital Divide
A recent survey has shown that the number of people in the United Kingdom who do not intend
to get internet access has risen. These people, who are know as 'net refuseniks', make up 44% of UK
households, or 11.2 million people in total.
The research also showed that more than 70 percent of these people said that they were not
interested in getting connected to the internet. This number has risen from just over 50% in 2005,
with most giving lack of computer skills as a reason for not getting internet access, though some
also said it was because of the cost. More and more people are getting broadband and high speed net
is available almost everywhere in the UK, but there are still a significant number of people who
refuse to take the first step. The cost of getting online is going down and internet speeds are
increasing, so many see the main challenge to be explaining the relevance of the internet to this
group. This would encourage them to get connected before they are left too far behind. The gap
between those who have access to and use the internet is the digital divide, and if the gap continues
to widen, those without access will get left behind and miss out on many opportunities, especially in
their careers.
Statement T F
1. More people in the UK do not intend to get internet access than before.

The Hollywood sign in the hills that line the northern border of Los Angeles is a famous landmark
recognized the world over. The white – painted, 50 – foot – high, sheet mental letters can be seen
from great distances across the Los Angeles basin.
The sign suffered for years of disrepair, and in 1973, it needed to be completely replaced, at a cost
of $ 27,700 per letter. Various celebrities were instrumental in helping to raise needed funds. Rock
star Alice Cooper, for example, bought an O in memory of Groucho Marx, and Hugh Hefner
of Playboy fame held a benefit party to raise the money for the Y. The construction of the new sign
was finally completed in 1978.

IV. (5pts) Read the passage and check T/ F for each statement below.
Some recent research into conversation between men and women has produced results which
will surprise few women. Men are always interrupting women when they talk. One researcher feels
that men regard female talk as a kind of conversational housework. They expect women to play a
supporting role. So a man interrupts in a display of dominance or control. Men also have a much
more unpleasant listening style. Whereas a woman uses gestures or says “Mm”, a man will say
such things as “right” or “OK”, thus, setting the stage for an interruption. Conversation of this kind
is, then, hardly meaningful communication. Male talk is often argumentative while women are more
tentative, asking more questions and tending to build up their replies on what the other person has
said. The research would indicate that women are better listeners than men. Yet, listening secretly to
conversations between groups of women, one has the impression of several simultaneous
monologues into which no man would be able to get a chance to speak.
1. According the writer, men feel that women’s conversation is only a support to their own.
2. The conversation between men and women is not meaningful communication because men do not
really listen to what women are saying .
3. The research shows that males are better at listening than females.
4. Men asked more questions and build up their replies on other people’s responses.
5. The writer says that when women talk together, they seem to talk at the same time.

Over the past 600 years, English has grown from a language of few speakers to become the
dominant language of international communication. English as we know it today emerged around
1350, after having incorporated many elements of French that were introduced following the
Norman invasion of 1066. Until the 1600s, English was, for the most part, spoken only in England
and had not extended even as far as Wales, Scotland, or Ireland. However, during the course of the
next two centuries, English began to spread around the globe as a result of exploration, trade
(including slave trade), colonization, and missionary work. Thus, small enclaves of English
speakers became established and grew in various parts of the world. As these communities
proliferated, English gradually became the primary language of international business, banking,
and diplomacy.
Currently, about 80 percent of the information stored on computer systems worldwide is in English.
Two-thirds of the world's science writing is in English, and English is the main language of

III. Read the passage below and choose the best answer from A, B, C, or D(1pt)
It's often said that we learn things at the wrong time. University students frequently do
theminimum of work because they're crazy about a good social life instead. Children often scream
before their piano practice because it’s so boring. They have to be given gold stars and medals to be
persuaded to swim, or have to be bribed to take exams. But the story is different when you’re older.
Over the years, I've done my share of adult learning. At 30, I went to a college and did courses in
History and English. It was an amazing experience. For starters, I was paying, so there was no
reason to be late - I was the one frowning and drumming my fingers if the tutor was late, not the
other way round. Indeed, if I could persuade him to linger for an extra five minutes, it was a bonus,
not a nuisance. I wasn't frightened to ask questions, and homework was a pleasure not a pain. When
I passed an exam, I had passed it for me and me alone, not for my parents or my teachers. The
satisfaction I got was entirely personal.
Some people fear going back to school because they worry that their brains have got rusty. But the
joy is that, although some parts have rusted up, your brain has learnt all kinds of other things since
you were young. It has learnt to think independently and flexibly and is much better at relating one
thing to another. What you lose in the rusty department, you gain in the maturity department.
In some ways, age is a positive plus. For instance, when you're older, you get less frustrated.
Experience has told you that, if you're calm and simply do something carefully again and again,
eventually you'll get the hang of it. The confidence you have in other areas - from being able to
drive a car, perhaps - means that if you can’t, say, build a chair instantly, you don't, like a child, want
to destroy your first pathetic attempts. Maturity tells you that you will, with application, eventually
get there. I hated piano lessons at school, but I was good at music. And coming back to it, with a
teacher who could explain why certain exercises were useful and with musical concepts that, at the
age of ten, I could never grasp, was magical. Initially, I did feel a bit strange, thumping out a piece
that I'd played for my school exams, with just as little comprehension of what the composer
intended as I'd had all those years before. But soon, complex emotions that I never knew poured out
from my fingers, and suddenly I could understand why practice makes perfect.

An important part of world history is the story of communication. In prehistoric times, for
example, people did not have books. They did not know much about geography. People were
limited. They knew only about themselves and their environment (the land around their
homes).Their knowledge of geographical things like mountains and rivers was limited. They did not
travel very far. Sometimes they knew about nearby people and communicated with them. They sent
messages in simple ways. Early signals for communication included smoke from fires and the
sounds of drums. Then people formed towns, and then cities, as safe places to live. Soon they began
to develop other ways to communicate, to spread information. People began to buy and sell things
to one another. Because of their business, they developed writing systems to keep records and to
send messages. Life was changing for many people. Business caused changes, and so did the
invention of the printing press. Many more people learned to read then. Suddenly communication
and knowledge improved greatly. People sent letters and news by horse and carriage. Later the mail
went by train and then by airplane. World communication was now a possibility.
