If you’re feeling anxious or stressed, especially in these uncertain times, putting it down in a notebook or
journal can be instantly therapeutic

Today is a really good morning. I have managed to write five pages by hand. Even if it meant waking up at 4
am to do so.
Writing for a living and writing that keeps you alive can be two starkly different things. Filling blank pages
with everything that has been on one’s mind, uncensored, with no agenda, and even if it is gibberish, is
healing. For now, rid of rubbish and clutter, the mind is a blank slate to begin a day that is truly new. Ending
the day with empty pages also works wonders for exactly the same reasons, allowing for fears, anxiety,
depression, anger — and in these days of Zoom meetings, tedium and fatigue — to drip off our minds,
allowing for more restful sleep.
Psychologists Gerardo Ramirez and Sian Beilock at the University of Chicago discovered that among young
adults about to take math tests, those who wrote about their anxiety just before, fared far better than those
who didn’t.
One might argue that the banal act of writing is enough; it doesn’t matter if you’re writing by hand or typing
on a computer, tablet or phone. But as someone for whom writing has healed years of trauma, these have
never worked. Perhaps because having a separate notebook has the benefit of ritual — a sense of certainty
which is calming, a balm for anxious minds and edgy nerves. Perhaps it’s the physical act of touching
something natural (paper and pencil, both of which come from trees) which is soothing, versus the harshness
of screens. Unlike a phone on which you can type into in the night under a blanket, or in a public bathroom,
longhand is demanding — requiring lighting, a certain posture, a table-like solid surface, which then becomes
the ‘altar’. Perhaps it is the inherent Zen quality of doing only one thing at a time — doing it slowly,
deliberately and
completely.
When one writes by hand, magic happens. In this age of dizzying speeds, longhand slows
us down, forcing us to be present with all the demons and uncomfortable emotions we
have suppressed. Painful pasts we’ve kept buried, afraid to revisit.
Is Handwriting
IMPORTANT ?
Yet past traumas play in a loop in our heads. We brood, we ruminate. We complain
endlessly to kind friends and, if we are lucky, therapists we love and can afford. But when we write about the
past, it forces us to be present, no matter how awful the trauma. Beyond a point, the wrist hurts and the tears
and screams trapped inside, gush out. This is breaking point. We must not abandon ourselves on the page
like we have done in life. We must let it all come out and let the page be witness. This is when writing
becomes an act of courage, a radical act of self-care, turning us into warriors. There are many ways to
quieten the voices in our head. Runners will tell you running saved them, as will fitness addicts and sports
enthusiasts. But when we choose writing, we are not running away from anything. We are not asking the
voices to shut up. We are giving them a stage, letting them play out like they were always meant to. We are
loving ourselves like nobody else did and like nobody ever can.
Humans are the only species that can judge emotions as good or bad, and categorise what can, or cannot, be
expressed. The pressure we put on ourselves day after day is excruciating. No wonder we are in a mental
health crisis, and depression and anxiety are spreading like viruses themselves. Animals don’t do this. When
preys narrowly escape their predators, they don’t refuse to feel the enormous trauma of this life and death
situation. They stay present and shake, literally shaking off the entire episode physically.
When I turned to writing as a lonely, depressed child with letters to imaginary beings, poems, unconscious
fragments with no structure at all, I did not realise that I was doing just this — processing and shaking off
traumatic burdens that had been weighing me down. Writing like this since childhood has literally saved my
life. And continues to, every day. Many call this form of writing journaling. Many call it Morning Pages. Many
call it a meditation. I simply call it a lifeline.
In an increasingly uncertain world, what might save us is carrying something as simple as a notebook to spill
into it every annoyance, complaint and stressor. It’s like accessing therapy, free of cost, anywhere or any
time. We don’t need to wait for heavy-duty trauma like assault, abuse, war, accidents, illness or even tests
and presentations. We need to make writing a practice — first thing every morning, last thing every night and,
if possible, whenever we’re experiencing uncomfortable emotions. When we write for no audience and with
no agenda — whether about the distant past, suppressed memories, the painful present, or the totally banal
that weighs down our spirts — we are holding space for ourselves.
You will feel lighter and freer. But what will blow your mind are the endless surprises. You will find
unbelievable clarity, focus, creativity, problem-solving and endless ideas replace fogginess and anxiety. For
the rubbish has been cleared and the mind is free of distractions to create, like it was meant to.

What Is
GRAPHO-THERAPY ?
Grapho-therapy is a means of
making conscious alterations in
your handwriting in order to reflect
desired subconscious changes in
your personality.
It is about modifying the
handwriting in a conscious way, in
order to produce changes in
personality at a subconscious level
to improve different dimensions of
your life.
When you write, your brain sends
message, through the nerves in
your arm, to your hand.
Graphotherapy, is a reversal of the
normal writing process where your
hand sends messages to your
brain, to write in a certain way.
Grapho-therapy is to write for a few
days in a particular way.
