Atkin Diet Plan
Developed by Dr. Robert Atkins in 1972, Atkins Diet is a low carb diet program for weight loss.
1
The basic principle of this diet plan is to avoid carbs while enjoying protein and fat-rich foods.
The plan is based on the experience of Dr. Atkins when he abstained his patient from the intake
of sugar and carbohydrates, thus resulting to weight loss, wherein before the test were
unsuccessful on the usual low-calorie diets.2
Based on my previous assignment, it is possible that Atkins Diet can be a sound plan for weight
loss. Many people suffer excessive weight gain due to poor management of carb intake. Because
of its enticing taste, many overly indulge to this food group thus storing much fat into their
system. ‘Each gram of carbs contains 4 calories, and some of your favorite carb-rich foods
contain dozens of grams of carbs, which can add up to hundreds of calories.’3 Avoiding this food
group can drastically limits unwanted calories to the body that can translate to weight loss. This
finding is a gold-mine for those who are strangling to reduce weight. Because this diet plans only
suggests to limit carb intake not protein. In this regard, those who follow this plan can indulge
themselves to protein-rich food with moderation.
Nonetheless, if someone is strict in following Atkins to the point of no intake of carbs, it is
contradictory to Australian Dietary Guidelines (ADG) wherein grains (cereals) foods, mostly
wholegrain and/or high cereal fiber varieties are suggested staple food for a healthy diet.4 It is
recommended that atleast 4-6 serves of grain (cereal) foods per day.
Seeing some inconsistencies of this diet to ADG, it is better to include healthy types of
carbohydrates-rich products. Oatmeals, yams, brown rice, sweet potatoes, 100% whole wheat
bread/pasta and beans are some food items that possessed carbohydrates without too much
calories.5 Some food items are being produce in the country thus it is a viable alternative in
following Atkins Diet while being consistent with ADG.
