My morning routine is simple: lots of coffee. In my special cup. My father’s morning routine, on the contrary, is
anything but simple. He wants his egg boiled exactly 4.5 minutes. He needs freshly pressed orange juice from
exactly two oranges. And don’t get me started on my sister’s morning routine. It involves make-up, a shower,
clothes, more clothes and lots of fruit. Do I need to say more?

Ordinary
I know I’m not an ordinary ten-year-old kid. I mean, sure, I do ordinary things. I eat ice cream. I ride my bike. I play
ball. I have an Xbox. Stuff like that makes me ordinary. I guess. And I feel ordinary. Inside. But I know ordinary
kids don’t make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. I know ordinary kids don’t get stared at
wherever they go.
If I found a magic lamp and I could have one wish, I would wish that I had a normal face that no one ever noticed
at all. I would wish that I could walk down the street without people seeing me and then doing that look-away
thing. Here’s what I think: the only reason I’m not ordinary is that no one else sees me that way.
But I’m kind of used to how I look by now. I know how to pretend I don’t see the faces people make. We’ve all
gotten pretty good at that sort of thing; me, Mom and Dad, Via. Actually, I take that back: Via’s not so good at it.
She can get really annoyed when people do something rude. Like, for instance, one time in the playground some
older kids made some noises. I don’t even know what the noises were exactly because I didn’t hear them myself,
but Via heard and she just started yelling at the kids. That’s the way she is. I’m not that way.
Via doesn’t see me as ordinary. She says she does, but if I were ordinary, she wouldn’t feel like she needs to
protect me as much. And Mom and Dad don’t see me as ordinary, either. They see me as extraordinary. I think
the only person in the world who realizes how ordinary I am is me.
My name is August, by the way. I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.
Explain. “I know how to pretend I don’t see the faces people make.”
Mark all forms of the present simple (not to be), according to their use, in the first paragraph.

Talk to yourself. It may feel odd at first, but there are several benefits to walking around
muttering to yourself. "Talking to yourself is a wonderful way to practice mental discipline,"
says life coach Madeleine Culbertson. Not only can it help you calm down and sort through
issues, but it can help your brain to process thoughts more clearly. So go ahead and chat
away.
To wake yourself up before a busy day, consider hopping into a cold shower. "Taking a cold
shower in the morning, or plunging into a cold bathtub, helps to wake the mind and body up
and get your energy up to speed," Culbertson says. Afterward, you'll certainly be refreshed
enough to take on whatever comes your way.
If you're going to talk to yourself, consider taking it to the next level and looking in the
mirror. "Successful people ... give themselves a pep talk while looking in the mirror," says
psychology practitioner Amy Cooper Hakim. This may feel even stranger, but looking into
your eyes and saying some positive affirmations can have a pretty big impact on your life.
"When you say something often enough, you begin to believe it," she adds. So start reciting
a few goals, and watch as they start to stick.
Try taking some time each morning to dream up stories involving your household objects.
"I would ... pick out three items in my room ... and make up a story that linked these items,"
life coach Julia Ng says. "A great creative exercise to help me with my business." And also
one that's fun.
People always talk about the benefits of "being more mindful," but it can be difficult to
imagine what that might feel like. So here's an example around your morning coffee.
"As you hold your coffee, use your senses to take in as much as you can about it, such as its
temperature, flavor, smell, texture, etc," says drama therapist Krista Verrastro. "This helps
you focus on the present moment, which reduces anxiety and sadness." Doing so can keep
you in the moment, and more prepared for your day.
Successful people get things done, but they also know when to call it quits and relax.
The best way to do this? With an end-of-the-day ritual. Like a shower when you come back
home, which washes all your stress down the drain.
