BACK TO JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (FOR A DAY).

After 10 years of serious adult work as a journalist, I decided to get back to Junior High and see for myself
how teenager life is now.

1. Not so different
I went into a classroom full of teens. They looked at me with curiosity, but they soon forgot about me: it was
exam day. Many students got nervous, a girl bit her pencil until it broke and a boy accidentally broke his
paper. I guess that’s exactly how it was in the past.
2. Having fun
Art class. I never had art classes when I studied Junior High, so I thought it was pretty cool. Most students
enjoyed the activity except for 2 of them who moved slowly and looked sleepy. “Tired?” I asked, “Naa, just
bored. It’s not videogames, you know?” I am still in shock.
3. Seriosly
Do students enjoy school more now than in the past? Natalia (14 years old) gave me the best answer: “I enjoy
coming to school. I chat with my friends and do new things. Yesterday we used our telephones to make a
video for biology class. I hate homework though.” Using phones at school? Making videos? That’s new.
Hating homework? Well, some things will never change I suppose!
