Clippers were built for speed, and consideration of large carrying capacity and
economical operation were sacrificed for this purpose. They had long, slender hull with
10 sharp bows. Their three slanted masts carried a huge cloud of canvas sail, including top
gallants and royal sails, and sometimes skysails and moonrakers, to capture the power of
the winds. They required a hard driving captain and a large experienced crew.
Many records were set by clippers. Sovereign of the seas made it from San
Francisco to New York in eighty-two days. Flying Could did 374 miles in one day. Lightning
15 traveled from New York to Liverpool in thirteen days, and Ino made it from New York to
Singapore in eighty-six days. Some 500 clippers were built in American shipyards. British
yards turned out some twenty-seven tea clippers, as the British ships were called. Unlike
the wooden American ships, British clippers were “composites” with iron frames and
wooden planking. The most famous tea clipper was the cuttry park.
20 By 1860, the age of the clippers was fading. Gold diggings in California were nearly
exhausted. American investors found railroad building more profitable that clippers. Most
importantly, there was a technological innovation that doomed the clipper, and in fact, the
entire age of sail: the development of the steamship.

Questions 1-2
Deep within the earth there seethes a vast cauldron called Hot Dry Rock, or HDR, that
observer believe could make the United States and other nations practically energy
independent. HDR is a virtually limitless source of energy that generates neither pollution nor
dangerous wastes.
The concept, now being tested at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico,
is quite simple, at least in theory. Two adjacent wells are punched several miles into the Earth
to reach this subterranean furnace. Water is pumped down one well to collect inside the Hot
Dry Rock, creating a pressurized reservoir of superheated liquid. This is then drawn through
the other well to the surface, and there the water is accumulated load of heat energy is
transferred to a volatile liquid that, in turn, drives an electric power-producing turbine.
David Duchane, HDR program manager at Los Alamos, believes that economically
competitive, 1-megawatt plant of this type will be built and running in around two decades. A
small prototype station will be built in half that time. But Duchane dreams an even grander
dream. “we could build an HDR plant near the seacoast,” he says. “Could you image pumping
seawater down to where it heats up well above its boiling point? Then you bring it to the
surface to make electrical energy, and you turn some into vapor to get as much pure water as
you need.”
1. Which of the following terms is NOT used in the passage to refer to Hot Dry Rock?
A. A vast cauldron (line 1)
B. A virtually limitless source of power (lines 3-4)
C. A pressurized reservoir (line 9)
D. Subterranean furnace (line 7)
2. According to David Duchane, how long will it probably take to build a small
prototype Hot Dry Rock power station?
A. Ten years.
B. Four years.
C. Two years.
D. Twenty years.

Although he created the game of basketball at the YMCA in Springfield,
Massachusetts, Dr. James A. Naismith was a Canadian. Working as a physical education
instructor at the International YMCA, now Springfield College, Dr. Naismith noticed a lack
of interest in exercise among students during the wintertime. The New England winters
Line 5 were fierce, and the students balked at participating in outdoor activities. Naismith
determined that a fast-moving game that could be played indoors would fill a void after the
baseball and football seasons had ended.
First he attempted to adapt outdoor games such as soccer and rugby to indoor
play, but he soon found them unsuitable for confined areas. Finally, he determined that he
10 would have to invent a game.
In December of 1891, Dr. Naismith hung two old peach baskets at either end of the
gymnasium at the school, and, using a soccer ball and nine players on each side,
organized the first basketball game. The early rules allowed three points for each basket
and made running with the ball a violation. Every time a goal was made, someone had to
15 climb a ladder to retrieve the ball.

Dow Jones averages. They are based on a select group of stocks and bonds that are traded
on the New York Stock Exchange. The Dow Jones averages are composed of four different
Line 5 types of averages; the average price of the common stock of thirty industrial firms, the
average price of the common stock prices of twenty transportation companies, the average
price of the common stock prices of fifteen utility companies, and an overall average that is
the most commonly used is the industrial average; it is often used by an investor interested
in checking the state of the stock market before making an investment in an industrial stock.

Mardi Gras, which mean “Fat Tuesday” in French, was introduced to America by
French colonist in the early eighteenth century. From that times it has grown in popularity,
particularly in New Orleans, and today it is actually a legal holiday in several southern
states. The Mardi Grass celebration in New Orleans begins well before the actual Mardi

Questions 1-5
Mickey Mouse
Mickey Mouse was not Walt Disney's first successful cartoon creation, but he is
certainly his most famous one. It was on a cross country train trip from New York to
California in 1927 that Disney first drew the mouse with the big ears. Supposedly, he took
his inspiration from the tame field mice that used to scamper into his old studio in Kansas
Line 5 City. No one is quite sure why he dressed the mouse in the now-familiar shorts with two
buttons and gave him the yellow shoes. But we do know that Disney had intended to call
him Mortimer until his wife Lillian intervened and christened him Mickey Mouse.
Capitalizing on the interest in Charles Lindbergh, Disney planned Mickey's debut in
the short cartoon Plane Crazy, with Minnie as a co-star. In the third short cartoon,
10 Steamboat Willie, Mickey was whistling and singing through the miracle of the modem
soundtrack. By the 1930s Mickey's image had circled the globe. He was a superstar at the
height of his career.
Although he has received a few minor changes throughout his lifetime, most
notably the addition of white gloves and the alterations to achieve the rounder forms of a
15 more childish body, he has remained true to his nature since those first cartoons. Mickey is
appealing because he is nice. He may get into trouble, but he takes it on the chin with a
grin. He is both good-natured and resourceful. Perhaps that was Disney's own image of
himself. Why else would he have insisted on doing Mickey's voice in all the cartoons for
twenty years? When interviewed, he would say. ''There is a lot of the mouse in me." And
20 that mouse has remained one of the most pervasive images in American popular culture.
4. What does the author mean by the statement in lines 12-14: Although he has
received a few minor changes throughout his lifetime, most notably the addition of
white gloves and the alterations to achieve the rounder forms of a more childish
body, he has remained true to his nature since those first cartoons.”?
A. The current version of Mickey Mouse is different in every way from the early
cartoons.
B. The original Mickey Mouse was one of the first cartoon characters.
C. The personality of Mickey Mouse has not changed over the years.
D. In the first cartoons, Mickey Mouse looked more like a child.
5. The first image of Mickey Mouse is described as all of the following EXCEPT
A. He was dressed in short with two buttons.
B. He had big ears.
C. He wore yellow shoes
D. He was wearing white gloves.
Questions 6-10
Eugene O'Neill
Universally acclaimed as America's greatest playwright, Eugene O'Neill was born in
1888 in the heart of the theater district in New York City. As the son of an actor he had early
exposure to the world of the theater. He attended Princeton University briefly in 1906, but
returned to New York to work in a variety of jobs before joining the crew of a freighter as a
Line 5 seaman. Upon returning from voyages to South Africa and South America, he was
hospitalized for six months to recuperate from tuberculosis. While he was recovering, he
determined to write a play about his adventures on the sea.
He went to Harvard, where he wrote the one-act Bound East for Cardiff It was
produced in 1916 on Cape Cod by the Provincetown Players, an experimental theater group
10 that was later to settle in the famous Greenwich Village theater district in New York City. The
Players produced several more of his one-acts in the years between 1916-1920. With the
full-length play Beyond the Horizon, produced on Broadway in 1920, O'Neill's success was
assured. The play won the Pulitzer Prize for the best play of the year. O'Neill was to be
awarded the prize again in 1922, 1928, and 1957 for Anna Christie, Strange Interlude, and
15 Long Day's Journey Into Night. Although he did not receive the Pulitzer Prize for it, Mourning
Becomes Electra, produced in 1931, is arguably his most lasting contribution to the
American theater. In 1936, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature.

Questions 1-10
In 776 B.C., the first Olympic games were held at the foot of Mount Olympus to honor
The Greeks' chief god, Zeus. The warm climate for outdoor activities, the need for
preparedness in war, and their lifestyle caused the Greeks to create competitive sports.
Only the elite and military could participate at first, but later the games were open to all free
Line 5 Greek males who had no criminal record. The Greeks emphasized physical fitness and
strength in their education of youth. Therefore, contests in running, jumping, discus and
javelin throwing, boxing, and horse and chariot racing were held in individual cities, and the
winners competed every four years at Mount Olympus. Winners were greatly honored by
having olive wreaths placed on their heads and having poems sung about their deeds.
10 Originally these contest were held as games of friendship, and any wars in progress were
halted to allow the games to take place. They also helped to strengthen bonds among
competitors and the different cities represented.
The Greeks attached so much importance to the games that they calculated time in
four-year cycles called “Olympiads,” dating from 776 B.C. The contests coincided with
15 religious festivities and constituted an all-out effort on the part of the participant to please the
gods. Any who disobeyed the rules were dismissed and seriously punished. These athletes
brought shame not only to themselves, but also to the cities they represented.
8. Which of the following was ultimately required of all athletes competing in the
Olympics?
A. They must have completed military service.
B. They had to attend special training sessions.
C. They had to be Greeks males with no criminal records.
D. They had to be very religious.
Questions 11-20
Hot boning is an energy-saving technique for the meat processing industry. It has received
significant attention in recent years when increased pressure for energy conservation has
accentuated the need for more efficient methods of processing the bovine carcass. Cooling an
entire carcass requires a considerable amount of refrigerated space, since bone and trimmable
Line 5 fat are cooled along with the muscle. It is also necessary to space the carcasses adequately in
the refrigerated room for better air movement and prevention of microbial contamination, thus
adding to the volume requirements for carcass chillers.
Conventional handling of meat involves holding the beef sides in the cooler for 24 to 36
hours before boning. Chilling in the traditional fashion is also associated with a loss of carcass
10 weight ranging from 2 percent to 4 percent due to evaporation of moisture from the meat tissue.
Early excision, or hot boning, of muscle pre-rigor followed by vacuum packaging has
several potential advantages. By removing only the edible muscle and fat pre-rigor, refrigeration
space and costs are minimized, boning labor is decreased, and storage yields increased.
Because hot boning often results in the toughening of meat, a more recent approach, hot boning
15 following electrical stimulation, has been used to reduce the necessary time of rigor mortis.
Some researchers have found this method beneficial in maintaining tender meat, while
others have found that the meat also becomes tough after electrical stimulation.
12. All the following are mentioned as drawbacks of the conventional method of boning
EXECPT
A. Storage space requirements.
B. toughness of meat.
C. Loss of carcass weight.
D. Energy waste.
Questions 21-30
Cooperation is the common endeavor of two or more people to perform a task or reach a
jointly cherished goal. Like competition and conflict, there are different forms of
cooperation, based on group organization and attitudes.
In the first form, known as primary cooperation, group and individual fuse. The
Line 5 group contains nearly all of each individual's life. The rewards of the group's work are
shared with each member. There is an interlocking identity of individual, group, and task
performed: Means and goals become one, for cooperation itself is valued.
While primary cooperation is most often characteristic of preliterate societies,
secondary cooperation is characteristic of many modern societies. In secondary
10 cooperation, individuals devote only part of their lives to the group. Cooperation itself is
not a value. Most members of the group feel loyalty, but the welfare of the group is not the
first consideration. Members perform tasks so that they can separately enjoy the fruits of
their cooperation in the form of salary, prestige, or power. Business offices and
professional athletic teams are examples of secondary cooperation.
15 In the third type, called tertiary cooperation or accommodation, latent conflict
underlies the shared work. The attitudes of the cooperating parties are purely
opportunistic; the organization is loose and fragile. Accommodation involves common
means to achieve antagonistic goals; it breaks down when the common means cease to
aid each party in reaching its goals. This is not, strictly speaking, cooperation at all, and
20 hence the somewhat contradictory term antagonistic cooperation is sometimes used for
this relationship.

Napoleon Bonaparte's ambition to control all the area around the Mediterranean Sea led
him and his French soldiers to Egypt. After losing the naval battle, they were forced to
remain there for three years. In 1799, while constructing a fort, a soldier discovered a piece
of stele (a stone pillar bearing an inscription) known as the Rosseta stone, in
Line 5 commemoration of the town near the fort. This famous stone, which would eventually lead
to the deciphering of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics dating to 3100 B.C., was written in
three languages: hieroglyphics (picture writing), demotic (a shorthand version of Egyptian
hieroglyphics), and Greek. Scientist discovered that the characters, unlike those in
English, could be written from right to left and in other directions as well. The direction in
10 which they were read depended on how the characters were arranged. Living elements
(animals, people, and body parts) were often the first symbols, and the direction that they
faced indicated the direction for reading them.
Twenty-three years after the discovery of the Rosseta stone, Jean Francois
Champollion, a French philologist fluent in several languages, was able to decipher the first
15 word – Ptolemy- the name of an Egyptian ruler. This name was written inside an oval called
a “cartouche”. Further investigation revealed that cartouches contained names of
important people of that period. Champollion painstakingly continued his search and was
able to increase his growing list of known phonetic signs. He and an Englishman, Thomas
Young, worked independently of each other to unravel the deeply hidden mysteries of this
20 strange language. Young believed that sound values could be assigned to the symbols,
while Champollion insisted that the picture represents words.

Narrator : Listen to part of a talk by a college professor.
Professor : Before you start writing your term papers, I would like to clarify the differences
among paraphrasing, quoting, and plagiarizing. All of these activities involve the use of
someone else's ideas, but whereas paraphrasing and quoting are legitimate writing
strategies, plagiarizing is a serious offense. In your term papers, I expect you to paraphrase,
that is, to summarize someone else's ideas in your own words. I also expect you to quote, that
is to copy information from another source and enclose it in quotation marks in your paper.
When you paraphrase and quote, be sure to cite the source of your information. If you do not
cite the source, then you are plagiarizing. You are stealing the ideas and using them as your
own. If I discover that you have plagiarized on your term paper, you will receive a zero for the
paper and an F for the course

Two men and a thirteen-year-old boy are safe now after being rescued from their tiny
boat which had been a drift in the Gulf of Mexico for twenty-four hours. After their families
had reported them missing, the Coast guard began searching, but the group was rescued
after waving frantically at a private airplane flying overhead. It turned out that they had
drifted only seven and a half miles from where their engine had broken down.
Mr. Davis, I've just finished reading your x-rays, and I would like to discuss them with
you. You have osteoarthritis in the middle of your back and scoliosis, which is a curvature of the
spine. I can also feel the muscle spasms and pinched nerves from your shoulders to the base
of your spine. While this may sound terrible to you, it is not life-threatening, nor is it something
to worry about. At present, there is no cure for these problems, but you can control them with
proper treatment. First of all, we need to adjust your diet a little. The nurse will provide you with
information on some foods to avoid completely and others whose consumption should be
restricted. Here is an explanation of some back exercises that you can do. They will help to
stretch and strengthen the muscles and to relieve the pain. Use a heating pad and an ice pack
to alleviate soreness in the joints. I'm going to prescribe some muscle relaxers and pain killers.
