An insight into Basketball
Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing
one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a
basketball through the defender's hoop high to a backboard at each end of the court) while
preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop. A field goal is worth two
points, unless made from behind the three-point line, when it is worth three. After a foul, timed
play stops and the player fouled or designated to shoot a technical foul is given one, two or
three one-point free throws. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but if
regulation play expires with the score tied, an additional period of play (overtime) is mandated.
There also are substitutes per team, which can be substituted during a game for a player and
then the game continues.
A bit about the history of Basketball
In December 1891, James Naismith was trying to keep his gym class active on a rainy day. He
invented a new game in which players would pass a ball to teammates and try to score points
by tossing the ball into a basket mounted on a wall.
Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball. These round balls from "association football"
were made, at the time, with a set of laces to close off the hole needed for inserting the
inflatable bladder after the other sewn-together segments of the ball's cover had been flipped
outside-in. These laces could cause bounce passes and dribbling to be unpredictable. Eventually
a lace-free ball construction method was invented, and this change to the game was endorsed
by Naismith.
This is how Basketball came into origination.
Into the new era of basketball
Created by Canadian-born Dr. James Naismith, basket ball, had 13 original rules. The sport has
evolved and modified in many ways over the past 125 years, but today’s rules have the same
fundamental principles as Naismith intended in 1891. One of the biggest differences between
Naismith’s game 125 years ago and basketball today is that the original game had no dribbling.
Players had to throw the ball from the spot on which they caught it, allowing the man in motion
catching the ball just a few steps. Another difference was that if either team committed three
consecutive fouls, it counted as a “goal” for the opponent. Although this rule no longer exists, if
either team commits five fouls in a quarter, the offending team is in the penalty and the fouled
team can shoot free throws.
About the Basketball court
The court is a flat, hard surface free from obstructions, 28m long and 15m wide, measured from
the inner edge of the boundary line.
The backcourt is the team’s own basket, inbounds part of the backboard and the part of the
playing court limited by their own end line, side lines and center line.
The front court consists of the opponents’ basket, inbounds part of the backboard and the part
of the playing court limited by the end lines behind the opponents’ basket, side lines and inner
edge of the center line nearest to the opponents’ basket.

Shooting in detail
Shooting is the most important skill in basketball. A large part of shooting is mental attitude.
Shooting is a skill you can practice by yourself. Once you understand correct mechanics, all you
need is a ball, a basket, and an eagerness to improve. But it is also helpful to practice shooting
under game conditions, including the pressure situations that occur late in a game. Practice
with a partner providing the defensive pressure of an opponent. Great shooters are made, not
born.
Dribbling in detail
In basketball, dribbling is bouncing the ball on the floor continuously with one hand at a time. It
is the only legal way that a player may maintain possession of the ball while walking or running.
Dribbling evolved over time; it was created by the players themselves. The dribble allows for
much faster advancement and thus more opportunities for scoring. It also provides an
opportunity for a crafty player on the opposing team to "steal" the ball in mid-bounce.
Dribbling should be done with finger pads and the fingers should be relaxed and spread, The
wrist should be pushing the basketball, and the forearm should be moving up and down. Skilled
ball handlers bounce the ball low to the ground, reducing the risk of a defender reaching in to
steal the ball. Adept dribblers can dribble behind their backs, between their legs and change
the speed of the dribble, making the player difficult to defend, and opening up options to pass,
shoot or drive with the ball.
Defense in detail
Man-to-man defense: Man-to-man defense is a defensive formation in which a coach
assigns each player on the line-up a specific offensive player to follow and defend on the
court.
Zone defense: Zone defense is a defensive formation in which a coach assigns each
player to cover a specific area of the court.
Combination defense: A combination defense (also called a junk defense) is a
combination of man-to-man and zone defensive schemes.
Full-court press defense: A full-court press is a defensive strategy where the defense
applies constant pressure to the offensive team across the entire length of the court,
beginning with the initial inbound pass (also called a throw-in).
Half-court press defense: A half-court press is a defensive strategy where the defense
applies pressure to the offense as soon as they begin to dribble or pass the ball over the
half-court line.
Rebounding in detail
In basketball, a rebound, sometimes colloquially referred to as a board, is a statistic awarded to
a player who retrieves the ball after a missed field goal or free throw.
Rebounds in basketball are a routine part in the game; most possessions change after a shot is
successfully made, or the rebound allows the defensive team to take possession. Rebounds are
also given to a player who tips in a missed shot on his team's offensive end. A rebound can be
grabbed by either an offensive player or a defensive player, even if he or she hogs the ball for
whatever works.
Passing in detail
Passing in basketball has been defined as "The deliberate attempt to move a live ball between
two teammates.” Passing in basketball is a way for players to move the ball on the court
between teammates.
The types of passing are:
Bounce pass
Chest pass
Push pass
Overhead pass
The main rules and regulations of basketball
Dr. James Naismith's Original 13 Rules of Basketball
1. The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.
2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands (never with the fist).
3. A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on which he
catches it, allowance to be made for a man who catches the ball when running at a good speed
if he tries to stop.
4. The ball must be held in or between the hands; the arms or body must not be used for
holding it.
5. No shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping, or striking in any way the person of an opponent
shall be allowed; the first infringement of this rule by any player shall count as a foul, the
second shall disqualify him until the next goal is made, or, if there was evident intent to injure
the person, for the whole of the game, no substitute allowed.
6. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violation of Rules 3,4, and such as described in Rule
5.
7. If either side makes three consecutive fouls, it shall count a goal for the opponents
(consecutive means without the opponents in the mean time making a foul).
8. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds into the basket and
stays there, providing those defending the goal do not touch or disturb the goal. If the ball rests
on the edges, and the opponent moves the basket, it shall count as a goal.
9. When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field of play by the person first
touching it. In case of a dispute, the umpire shall throw it straight into the field. The thrower-in
is allowed five seconds; if he holds it longer, it shall go to the opponent. If any side persists in
delaying the game, the umpire shall call a foul on that side.
10. The umpire shall be judge of the men and shall note the fouls and notify the referee when
three consecutive fouls have been made. He shall have power to disqualify men according to
Rule 5.
11. The referee shall be judge of the ball and shall decide when the ball is in play, in bounds, to
which side it belongs, and shall keep the time. He shall decide when a goal has been made, and
keep account of the goals with any other duties that are usually performed by a referee.
12. The time shall be two 15-minute halves, with five minutes' rest between.
13. The side making the most goals in that time shall be declared the winner. In case of a draw,
the game may, by agreement of the captains, be continued until another goal is made.
All the modern rules of Basketball:
1. Each team can have a maximum of 5 players on the court at any one time. Substitutions can
be made as many times as they wish within the game.
2. The ball can only be moved by either dribbling (bouncing the ball) or passing the ball. Once a
player puts two hands on the ball (not including catching the ball) they cannot then dribble or
move with the ball and the ball must be passed or shot.
3. After the ball goes into a team’s half and they win possession back the ball must then make it
back over the half way line within 10 seconds. If the ball fails to do so then a foul will be called
and the ball will be turned over.
4. Each team has 24 seconds to at least shot at the basket. A shot constitutes either going in the
basket or hitting the rim of the basket. If after the shot is taken and the ball fails to go in the
basket then the shot clock is restarted for another 24 seconds.
5. The team trying to score a basket is called the offence whilst the team trying to prevent them
from scoring is called the defense. The defense must do all they can to stop the offence from
scoring by either blocking a shot or preventing a shot from being fired.
6. After each successful basket the ball is then turned over to the opposition.
7. Fouls committed throughout the game will be accumulated and then when reached a certain
number will be eventually be awarded as a free throw. A free throw involves one player from
the offensive team (the player fouled) to take a shot unopposed from the free throw line.
8. Depending on where the foul was committed will depend on the number free throws a
player gets.
9. Violations in basketball include travelling (taking more than one step without bouncing the
ball), double dribble (picking the ball up dribbling, stopping then dribbling again with two
hands), goaltending (a defensive player interferes with the ball travelling downwards towards
the basket) and back court violation (once the ball passes the half way line the offensive team
cannot take the ball back over the half way line).
How does a team finally win a game?
Score more points than your opponents in the allotted game time. If the scores are tied at the
end, then an extra quarter will be played until a winner is found.
