LS 2 Sci - and Cri - Thinking Skills

The document discusses the differences between vertebrates and invertebrates. It provides examples of five types of vertebrates: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. It also gives examples of major invertebrate groups: sea jellies, worms, mollusks, and arthropods. Key differences are that vertebrates have backbones while invertebrates do not, and examples of characteristics of each group are provided like feathers for birds or shells for mollusks.

Vertebrates and Invertebrates

Vertebrates - an animal of a large group distinguished by the possession of a

backbone or spinal column, including.

The Five (5) Examples of Vertebrates

1. Fish – (including shark) make up the largest group of vertebrates.

- a limbless cold-blooded vertebrate animal with gills and fins and living
wholly in water.

2. Amphibians - a cold-blooded vertebrate animal of a class that comprises the

frogs, toads, newts, and salamanders. They are distinguished by having an aquatic
gill-breathing larval stage followed (typically) by a terrestrial lung-breathing adult
stage.
- can live both on land and water

3. Reptiles – they have dry, leathery scales, small brains and lots of eggs.
- are also amniotes, meaning that their eggs have multiple protective
layers.
4. Birds – are reptile like animals than maintain a constant internal body
temperature. They have an outer covering of feather, lay eggs, two legs
that are covered with scales and are used to walking or perching and
limbs modified into wings.

5. Mammals – are warm blooded and nourished by their mothers’ milk and most
are born live. Most mammals also have body hair.

Invertebrates – are animals that do not have spinal column or a skeleton made
bones.

Major Kinds of Invertebrates

1. Sea Jellies – have soft bodies and long, stinging body parts. The body of a sea
jelly is made mostly of water. It uses its stingers to stun its prey before pulling it
into its stomach.
2. Worms – are animals with long, soft bodies and no legs; example are
earthworms they help the soil healthy.

3. Mollusks – are animals with soft bodies. Some mollusks include the octopus,
squid, clam and snail. Many mollusks have a hard shell.

4. Arthropods – these animals are members of the largest group of invertebrates.

They wear their skeletons on the outside of their bodies. Insects, spiders and
crabs are arthropods.
