Chapter I

Activity 3.1 All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury

This story follows the events of a day on Venus. It is set in a foreign land, yet the author reels us
in by portraying things that we, as humans, experience. Most of us have had the feeling of not belonging
or being bullied and taunted for not being different. The story works through complex human
emotion very simply and clearly, through the experiences of children. The main themes are feelings of
longing, loss, and a representation of humanity.

The first emotion we are met with is anticipation. Everyone is feverishly looking forward to a
new event on the horizon. Margot is portrayed as detached, she stands away from the other children, and
exhibits a sort of quiet longing, directly contrasting the excitement of the rest. These children were
brought to Venus to live a better life on a new planet. None but one remembers Earth, and the one that
does can’t bring herself to let it go. Thus, she is ostracized.

She lives her life knowing she is different because she remembers the sun. All the visuals are
explained in a childish manner using crayons, coins, and a necklace of rain. The author uses language
that we can relate to, whilst describing a world we could never visit. A common thread is that Margot
feels empty without the sun. She participates in class only when they spoke of the sun or the summer
and remains silent otherwise. She stands alone, feeling like a fish out of water, in a place she feels she
doesn’t belong. Margot is described as drained of color is a representation of how she feels lifeless on
Venus.

The animosity that exists between the children and Margot is presented to us as an outsider in the
classroom. This, however, is just a foreshadowing of what is to come. Their hatred is rooted in
resentment, as Margot refuses to play with them, or participate in any meaningful manner. Her biggest
crime is the one she had no say in, leaving Earth two years after the rest. They were jealous of her and
painted her as a liar. She was made into a pariah. The children’s hatred for her is represented in how
quick they were to follow the ringleader, William, and lock Margot away from something she
desperately wanted.

Their smiles after locking her away, listening to her muffled cries, and ignoring her pleas and
protests, show us that the cruelty of humanity can manifest itself even at such young ages. They feel no
remorse and moved on without another thought. They spare no pity for Margot. Children, like adults,
can be sadistic as well. A glimpse of it may be seen in the different forms of bullying that they engage
in.

“All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury is mainly pointing to bullying, which is caused by
jealousy and envy. Interestingly enough, Ray Bradbury has chosen to explore this theme in the context
of a future generation that has the chance to travel between planets as a consequence of evolution. Even
there, in the fictional setting of Venus, after hundreds or thousands of years of human evolution,
bullying is still present. This shows that, in Bradbury’s opinion, bullying others who are inferior is an
element so deeply-rooted in human nature that it perpetuates across time. A sub-theme of the short story
is nostalgia and longing, which is illustrated by both Margot and her classmates.

Activity 3.2

Essential Questions:

1. What are the elements of the poem present in the poem?

• Voice, diction, imagery, figures of speech, symbolism and allegory, syntax, sound, rhythm and meter,
and structure.

2. How was the poem different from the traditional poem you know?

• The Poem was different from the traditional poem because it’s written with the element of imagery
which provides a reader to think and conclude in their understanding.

3. What are its characteristics?

• Six stanzas of unequal length lines, with stanzas ranging from between two to six lines. Lines are
typically finished by an end stop, with only three lines in the entire poem using enjambment.

4. Name some contemporary poets.

• Sherman Alexie
• Elizabeth Bishop
• Warsan Shire.

Activity 3.3

1. What can you say about the contemporary drama/play you just watch?

The topic of the play involves a lesbian couple. The play attempts to address the danger of these
kinds of relationships and thus makes the play more interesting, relatable, and realistic. It is, quite
simply, a love story. It is a tender and humorous and beautiful story of love full of twists and challenges.
It is a fine cliché of love conquers all.

2. Is there some changes in development in contemporary drama/play in present?

Some techniques are developed today that may have not been yet used before. People are more
experimental and bold with how they present themselves on stage. Moreover, we now have more topics
and real-life inspiration to use as the basis of new plays. Audiences and critics are now more brutal with
their opinions too.

Activity 3.4

Exposition

Sara and Callie are walking through New York City's West Village very late at night when they share
their first kisses.

Rising action

It focuses on the story of Sara and Callie, who are assaulted on the street after their first kiss.

Climax

The climax takes place in the second scene, a few minutes into the production. It's the achievement of
this riveting story that we're as invested in the long finale as we are. Linearly the story would describe
the unfolding of their relationship, from acquaintances to friends to something else

Falling action

Callie dresses Sara in the hospital to take her home and reassures Sara that she “can do this”, as in
taking care of Sara, and asks Sara to choose her over going with her family.

Resolution

George, Callie's good friend, tries to help with the situation, but there is little he can do. Peter, Sara's ex-
boyfriend from St. Louis, comes to help nurse her back to health. Throughout Stop Kiss, relationships
are explored, formed, and even ended.

Activity 4.1

The world is changing at an accelerated pace. People’s tastes change in literature and some even come
to lose their taste entirely. It is more and more difficult to make today's media-savvy new generations
acquire a taste in reading classic literature, given the powerful influence of movies, the Internet, and
mentioned circumstances.

There is a lot more to do in our free time than reading, most of which is easier than reading. Reading is a
task that requires time and effort; you can’t pitch convenience or speed to someone when discussing
literature. Movies are more action-packed; TV entertains; video games excite; the internet always has a
myriad of things to do.

When people tried to read, they picked up a bad book. Bad works of literature negatively affect the
works that have lasting merit; people who have had a bad experience reading rarely try again to enjoy it.

Nevertheless, there are also good things affecting contemporary literature. You can now blog, blog,
vlog, and podcast, all for free, and get ready, appreciative readers too. You can write and publish your
books (e-books) at a fraction of the cost of a printed book. You may say this is a bright side of life
lyrics. Everybody can be a writer and writing doesn't look formidable anymore.

Some opinions chatting on the Internet or messaging frequently over the mobile phones impair our
children’s language skills. Communication and language skills have improved with the arrival of the
Internet. Basically, as we chat more, be it through the net or email or mobile, so we write more, express
more, and somewhere our communication skills improve.

Because of digital technology and the distribution possibilities offered by the Internet, small publishing
is more feasible today than ever before. Independent voices can be affordably made available to the
general reading public, providing fresh titles, both fiction and non-fiction.

However, establishing and running a small publishing house may seem like a complicated endeavor.
Acquiring International Standard Book Numbers, purchasing a unique Internet domain name for your
publishing house website, determining a niche for your publication efforts, Locating the book printer
most appropriate for your needs, contacting small press-friendly book reviewers and sending attractive
press kits, visiting small press trade shows and network with other small publishers, are just a few parts
in the puzzle that many independent writers are not ready or not willing to deal with.

Literature is in crisis and we must acknowledge that change is inevitable; the question is, what changes
are good, and which are to be fought? Literature is worth fighting for.

II. Essay

Intellectual property systems failing

In a world of shared content and digital reproduction, it’s more important than ever to protect
the authenticity of people’s work. Some people post vast quantities of creative material on the Internet
— material that is available for downloading by anyone who has the right computer equipment.

Some authors are also disheartened to distribute their works because not only does it involve a
considerable amount of money to produce, but they are also not sure if they would earn enough because
their works can easily be copied and redistributed.

Publishers have long been endorsing the virtues of copyright and the need to protect authors.
Authors must be treated fairly and must be rewarded for their work. And copyright is the tool by which
publishers can do this. However, it seems that even that protection is easily bypassed. In essence,
copyright is a legal means of protecting creative works. These works can be literary, artistic,
educational, or musical forms. As a form of intellectual property law, copyright provides exclusive
publication, distribution, and usage rights for the creator. It is intended to protect the original expression
of an idea in the form of creative work, but not the idea itself.

The elimination of copyrights and lack thereof would inevitably lead to significant confusion and
chaos not only in the marketplace but in society as a whole. The artistic arena would quickly deteriorate
as artists, authors, and other creative individuals would sacrifice financial protection for their creations.
For example, as soon as a book was released, it could be re-released by someone else with no financial
consideration to the original author.

Businesses - small and large - would likewise suffer from an inability to protect their ideas and
identities from theft. Imagine what would happen if Mcdonald’s no longer possessed the ability to retain
exclusive to the golden arches. Competitors with golden arches of their own would soon litter the
landscape. Mcdonald’s would lose profit, but more importantly, consumers would find it difficult to
differentiate one company's products from another's.

Additionally, a world without copyrights could conceivably threaten innovation in arenas

currently protected by copyright law. If exclusive rights were no longer available, the profit incentive
behind new ideas would disappear as innovations instantly entered the public domain.
Even though the current copyright system isn't perfect, right now it is the only system we have to protect
the creators and rightful owners of original forms of expression.

Activity 5.2

Nature

In Frankenstein, Shelley presents an image of nature that is at once benevolent and diabolic,

breathtaking in its beauty and shattering in its brutality. The natural world is life-giving and nurturing to
humans, but she is also under threat by the forces of progress.

Appeal

The novel makes a strong emotional appeal to deep wishes for immorality in man and an understanding
of human origin. On the other hand, most of the plot of her novel is the creator's reaction to his creation
and is weakly connected to the idea of man-made life.

Social Function

Mary Shelley's book Frankenstein raises several social issues such as the disapproval of the female
gender in society. The social class, as depicted in the novel, is split along gender lines that marginalize
women as a result of the existence of a predominant patriarchal structure.

 the United States in the 19th century, and called westerns, are also popular
 Another common genre is fantasy or science fiction

Activity 7.1

Popular literature has always been understood as part of the larger entertainment industry which
exists in the form of the marketplace regulated by forces of demand and supply. Works of popular
fiction are often classified as ‘bestsellers and critics have repeatedly argued that their aesthetics are
governed by commercial forces. This makes people wonder if the criteria of profitability and
marketability take precedence over quality, artistry, integrity, and intellectual challenge. This debate
shaped one of the most important critical conceptions of popular literature as a part of “real
literature”.

Some critics also have issues with the genre used in popular literature written with the intent
of conforming to the norms of a particular kind of writing. Such works place more
emphasis on following the traditions of a particular genre. Science fiction, detective thrillers, and
romance novels are often considered prime examples of the fiction genre. This overdetermination
by the traditional markers of the genre has also led to the labeling of popular literature as repetitive
narrative logic and lacks any creative vigor or originality.

The idea of the popular is very firmly rooted in a particular space and time. What counts as
popular today might not have the same value a few decades from now. Similarly, what is popular in
a particular culture or community might not translate well to other cultures. Critics have often
argued that popular fiction lacks longevity i.e. it does not survive the
test of time. As opposed to this, a classical or a canonical text “transcends time and space and gives
new meaning to a new generation of readers”. This distinction between popular and canonical has
occupied a central position in all critical discussions of this form of cultural production. Instead of
seeing popular literature’s lack of longevity as a weakness, certain
critics now understand it as its strength.

Critics may have no concept that the world has changed, that publishing has changed, that
filmmaking has changed, and if you’re not constantly looking at your education model and
adjusting for the change, you’ll find yourself teaching antiquity. Good writing is good
writing, no matter what the genre. If we can all accept that, we can all enjoy whatever
literature our heart longs for.

1. Manga

I have been an avid reader of manga since I was in high school. Their storylines are so creative, that
it keeps me interested in the manga. It kind of makes me compare the boring reality with the

wonderful world where many possibilities can occur. So basically, manga is just an escape to reality
when things aren’t going so well for me or I’m just bored. They’re also an amazing time-killer. You

can never get bored of manga. And most of the ones I’ve read are ongoing so I can look forward
to the story progressing.

2. Comics

The nostalgia comes from remembering what it was like to be young, to have fewer cares, and
to discover new worlds, ideas, and characters in the pages of the comics my friends and I read. The
appreciation comes from admiring the artistic skills necessary to render the fantastic worlds of the
comic universe - there are so many different styles of comic art, from hyper-realistic to hyper-
abstract and everything in between. I also appreciate good writing, when the stories and characters
are complex, moving, funny, and/or frightening.

Characteristics of a comics
 They have panels
 Speech bubbles are used
 Key tasks in the creation of comic books are writing, drawing, and coloring

3. Horror fiction

I think the most important thing that I take away from reading horror is that everything is
surmountable and survivable. Sure, there are plenty of horror stories where the protagonists die, but
there are just as many, if not more, where they make it through. Life is hard, no one is going to tell you
otherwise, but horror doesn’t present escapism that comes easy. It asks you to follow the emotional and
physical journeys of characters, often to feel what they are going through, or otherwise to stand
juxtaposed to the horrible things they are doing or seeing. By the end, it can feel like you have been to
hell and back, which might not be “fun,” but is still fulfilling, enriching, and thought-provoking.

Characteristics of a Six-word flash poetry

 Tension: providing a sense of suspense or mystery, terror, shock, or fear.

 Relevance: creating a cultural or personal connection, tapping into an inbuilt fear such as death.
 Unrealism: having a distinct element that separates the viewer from what they are watching and
reality, allowing for distance from the events seen.

Literature consumption is not the same anymore because of the emerging literature, although it is very
great that there are new and fresh ways to write and enjoy it, it causes backlash for instead of picking a
book and reading it, we just choose to scroll over our social media accounts such as Facebook,
Instagram, and Twitter to share things and just browse over it to kill our time and boredom and it might
be very helpful in such ways but it does make us forget that there is still magic in books and thrill in
reading over it.

As much as I love browsing over my social media and reading through it, I am also a big fan of reading
books full of author’s stories so I would like to tell everyone to keep it cool and balance the things
because too much of everything is bad. Keep some of the old good habits, the present might be very
thrilling and fun but it is still good about classic and old.

exactly the true goals of these organizations, but one thing is certain, on the verge of a crisis, one of their

restore order to the land.

better than what the world has ever seen. The android was also meticulously designed such that it could
only be controlled once a genetically matched host synthesized with it and once integrated, the machine
would act seamlessly according to the controller's consciousness.

The leader of the Binaobao Tech saw the prodigious potential of this new technology for warfare and
world domination and swiftly directed the Amars to covertly hide the proposed war machine and
transfer the technology to the biggest-bidding government for mass production. However, the Amars
refused. After swiftly encoding order to their Prototype SIOPAO-01 to destroy all of the experimental
data, the Amars mysteriously vanished.

Little boy Digong did not know about these events, however, after his parents disappeared, he had been
in Binaobao Tech’s crosshairs, to be taken as an important hostage and bargaining chip. The tech giant
was adamant about obtaining the truth behind the Amars’ disappearance and recovering the machine.
The scientists, together with the elite soldiers of the Binaobao Tech bulldozed their way into Amars’
house and violently tried to seize the child. However, Digong managed to elude the corrupted people
and bolt out of their house. As Digong ran ahead of the chasing mob of scientists and soldiers, he
recalled what his father had once told him: "Remember Digong, when you’re left with no choice and if
you feel like you’re in immediate danger, just press the red button on your wristwatch and think of your
mom and me, and a guardian angel will show up to save you". Digong did just as his father instructed
and shouted for his father for help, as he was running for a while now, his little legs seem to have
cramped and stopped working. He was so exhausted and was ready to give up when all of a sudden, a
massive metal crate dropped between his and her pursuers. The box had an etching: SAVIOR BOT 01
of 01.

A powerful ray of light split the crate and from within, emerged the machine, SIOPAO-01. Digong’s
heart beat faster as it marched up to him and seem to scan the boy’s body. Recognizing him to be a
suitable host, SIOPAO-01 activated his PROTECT mode on Digong. Then scanning around at the mad
scientists and pack of soldiers, SIOPAO-01 activated its DESTROY mode. The people tried to attack

the machine, but it released a flurry of lasers and missiles, turning every one of them, but Digong, to

Digong understood the true power of SIOPAO-01, also realizing that there were secret mechanisms
hidden inside his wristwatch, he thought that it might hold clues to finding his parents. He turned to
SIOPAO-01 and gave his next order, commanding the robot to help him search for his parents with the
help of this wristwatch. SIOPAO-01 held the watch and inserted it into its chest. The wristwatch was
then integrated into the robot’s system and with his inbuilt computer calculators, it was able to indicate a
possible location: The dark continent of Bangga Bante.

Days passed and after all of their fighting and hiding, they prepared to leave Iscofia. Digong has
developed a bond with the robot and the robot has also learned new weapons day after day, adapting to
all possible scenarios involving the protection of Digong. After the passage of these events, all the boy
knew and cared about was that this special robot had always been there to protect and accompany him.
SIOPAO-01 occasionally calls him Deedee, just like his father did, while he affectionately calls him
Tiktok due to the sound he makes, in return. Finally, with the support of Tiktok, Digong gathered
enough courage and decided to cross the borders with his robot friend to track down his parent's
whereabouts, unknowing of the evil and corruption that awaits them on their next adventure.

writing, especially of recognized artistic value: "Literature must be an analysis of experience and a
synthesis of the findings into a unity" (Rebecca West). The art or occupation of a literary writer.

2. Contemporary Literature: The word contemporary means living, belonging to, or occurring in the
present. So when we talk about contemporary literature, we are talking about literature that is being
