CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

The new modern period has seen the growth of technologies such as computers,
digital gadgets, televisions, and many others that are useful for people and that are gadgets.
Gadgets, or digital devices, have become a major necessity for most people nowadays. A
gadget is a useful device that people use to make their lives easier. Gadgets can be used to
communicate with others and gain insight into current events throughout the world. They can
also provide entertainment, like the internet and games. Despite these benefits, over use of a
gadget can lead to addiction and have a negative impact on the user’s life. One aspect of the
user’s lives that will be impacted is their relationship with their family. When a user’s attention
is drawn to their devices, they remain unaware of their surroundings and the people around
them. This problem was proven by many other studies.

Excessive use of gadget has numerous negative effects on students; among them are stress,
addiction, depression, emotional problem, cognitive and moral development disorder.
Nowadays, students use often due to pandemic and quarantine, too much use of gadget has
some specific effects on student’s academic improvement as well as their relationship with
their family. This research used the phenomenological descriptive approach to explain the
effect of gadget to student and their family bonds.

According to Anatom (2021), a gadget is a technical device that includes digital

technologies that has enhanced functionality and limited possibilities. Anatom (2021), also
added that a gadget is a smart device performing certain functions that helps the human being
to fulfill its task and activities. We cannot deny that having this gadget and any of device really
help everyone to make their task faster. In acquiring this kind of privilege on having gadgets
and device, everyone is accessible to any kind of information.

It may be amazing to hear all the good things that gadgets and devices did to us but
in every good thing there is always negative outcome. But in this juncture we will not just
discuss on the positive impact of having gadgets but also its negative effect on the people.
According to Adhikari (2022), the advantages of using electronic gadgets is it helps to enhance
the speaking, listening and creative skills of a person. He also added that the visual
presentation in the gadgets may help a person to learn specially the children. Adhikari (2022)
2

also emphasized that students are able to understand concepts and ideas better by using
learning apps without any assistance of the teacher or the parents.

On the other hand, the negative impacts of using gadgets based on the study of
Gillespie (2018) is that it decreased the attention span of the student from 12 seconds it
dropped to 8 seconds. She also stated that the students will lead to having difficult time to
focus on class and can affect his or her grades. Gillespie (2018) added that it also has a
negative impact to the health of a person because the use of gadgets encourages a sedentary
lifestyle and may lead to poor posture, weight gain and also damages the eyes. Based on the
study of Gillespie (2018) it also had a negative impact on the sleeping pattern of a human being
because watching TV or using a smartphone, tablet, laptop or other type of electronic devices
late at night may interfere with a person's sleep patterns.

The researchers conclude that even its good effect of usage of gadgets if it’s not
used properly, it can damage the life of a person. This means that the good effect or bad effect
of a certain thing depends on how a person uses it.

more active and noticeable due to being locked in doors because of the pandemic. Though the
pandemic still exists, we the senior STEM researchers, take into consideration of conducting an
interview and observation to the individuals of Grade 11 Students of CITCI S.Y 2021-2022 in regards
about the Effects of Gadgets usage towards Family relationship. This study finds out the effect of
gadget usage and family functionality, if it has worsened the relationship of the family or not.

1.5 THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

In today’s generation, the emergence of the internet and smartphones showed an increase in the
number of people struggling with an addiction to technology. It's not uncommon for both youth and
adults to feel a need to constantly be “plugged in” to social media and the internet, but this often leads
to a fear of missing out, and fear of being left out in young people (Julia Smith). Gadget Usage has
several terms such as smartphone addiction, mobile phone addiction, problematic mobile phone use
(PMPU), mobile phone dependence, compulsive mobile phone use, and mobile phone overuse (Al-
Barashdi, Bouazza, & Jabur, 2015). Gadget Usage comes from the excessive use or misuse of gadgets
or technology. The overuse of devices or addiction to gadgets like computers, smartphones, video
games, etc. may reduce student’s self-motivation, ability, and interest in learning. It’s unsafe for a
student who uses gadgets more than limits. (Golden Peak High School)

Today’s adolescents have unprecedented access to modern technology and use them in expected
and unexpected ways. Adolescents spend many hours a day using the technology, and the vast
majority of them have access to internet, cell phones, smart phone, video games and many other
forms of modern technology. With the increased role of modern technology in the adolescents’ lives
has come the increased concern about how adolescents might be affected. This may take them away
from important social interactions that develop in-person relationships. A good parent-teen
relationship is important for adolescent health and development. The more time spent on television,
computers, cell phone and video games leads to a lower quality of attachment to parents. This
descriptive correlation study was aimed to investigate the relationship between adolescents' use of
technology and their parent' social relationship (JEP-Vol.7 No. 14 2016)

Overusing cell phones and cell phone addiction are the compulsive companions to phubbing, and
like phubbing, they are increasingly becoming problems for more and more people. Being constantly
attached to our gadgets is taking a toll on our family
relationship. Having enough things that interfere with our family time—busy work schedules,
homework, extracurricular activities. Research shows that many people often lose track of time when
they're on their cell phones (Katherine Lee).
6

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

After a thorough and in-depth search by the researcher, this chapter presents the associated
literature. Those that are included in this chapter help familiarize that are important to the current
study.

With technological advances, devices have evolved to be so powerful and smart that it feels like
having a super-computer on one’s hands. Human now have an insatiable appetite for information at
their fingertips. When technology makes this happen, the natural tendency is for this to become an
expectation

2.2 POSITIVE EFFECTS OF GADGETS ON FAMILY RELATIONSHIP

According to the article titled by "The Positive and Negative Impacts of Technology on Family
Life (2017, Dec 30)". Technology's one beneficial effect is that it brings families closer together.
These technical devices are also quite useful for sharing and receiving information within the family.
Using social networking sites on computers also benefits the family. Families no longer need to leave
their homes to take care of minor matters thanks to computer functions. These technical devices can
also be utilized by the family to communicate with one other, even if they are separated by distance,
demonstrating how electronics can improve family interactions. When each family member sought to
know about each other's status, technology proved to be more efficient. Instant messaging systems
would not be possible without the use of technology, making it difficult for relatives or family
members to communicate with one another.

A gadget is a modern communication device that is widely used today. A gadget makes life easier
for anyone who uses it to communicate, find information, entertain themselves, and more. These
devices have a positive impact on the lives of young children. The proper use of technology can have
a more positive impact on children's development. Colors, shapes, and noises will be easier to learn
and recognize with the help of gadgets. Children's brains can be sharpened to improve visual acuity,
language skills, and meta-cognitive abilities. The job that needs to be done in the family's life is
referred to as function. As a result, the parents' first responsibility must be to their children. In their
children's life, parents are the first educators. If a parent can teach or discipline their children to limit
9

their use of technological devices, these technologies can have a good impact on their life (Sihura,
2018).

2.3 NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF GADGETS

As stated in an article by ("Ecole Globale" 2021) Everyone today is engrossed in the screens of
their devices. They spend the majority of time scrolling through the feeds, playing games, or
watching and making videos. Even if all the family members are sitting in a standard room, they are
more involved in their devices and not in physical interaction with each other. They also stated that
sharing a meal together without the involvement of smartphones has become a rare occurrence.
Mobile addiction has a severe issue causing a lot of distractions.

As explained by Aggarwal (2019) life has completely transformed during generations from the
rise of technology. Everyone is so busy with work, school and extracurricular activities that families
hardly spend any time together. It has reached to a point where it seems like parents and children are
emailing and texting each other more than they are talking to each other even when they are at home
together. She also mentioned that whether, its morning breakfast or dinner time everybody is giving
half of their focus on their personal screens. This severely affects the professional performance of
children who are brought up in such a mechanical environment.

2.4 IMPACT OF GADGET AMONG FAMILIES

According to Mohammed Usman (2020), being addicted to mobile phones can ruin the
relationship between friends and family. This is because when they are addicted, they usually don’t
come out of their room and refuse to communicate with the family. Also, when they do not have the
access to the phone, they feel like they have nothing else to do at home.

2.5 EFFECTS OF ELECTRONIC GADGET

A gadget is a device that functions primarily to make human communication easier. Nonetheless,
nowadays gadgets are overused by a lot of people. Many people are using their gadgets too often and
tend to ignore their environment roughly. This behavior also occurs in the family environment, which
10

caused some negative effects. One of these effects is the increased difficulty of direct interaction
between family members. Hasna Budi Ariani, Gandara Permana (2018).

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES

2.6 NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF GADGETS ON FAMILY RELATIONSHIP

A hundred adolescents with excessive gadget use were included in a study to demonstrate the
impact of gadget usage on family relationships. According to the findings, the majority of adolescents
who used gadgets excessively had poor family interaction (98%) and only (2%) had somewhat
adequate interaction. This indicates that excessive use of gadgets might have negative impact on
family relationships. (Esther Jennifer, 2012)

2.7 INFLUENCE OF GADGETS ON FAMILY INTERACTION

Excessive use of electronic devices can cause a person to become isolated from their social
environment, including family. Family is the first place where a person’s life conduct is formed
through social interaction. Parents are role models in the family since they are the ones who are in
charge of maintaining excellent communications. The excessive usage of gadgets by children and
their families might have an impact on family communication and interactions. These changes result
in a more individualistic mentality, resulting in a diminished role for emotional and social interactions
(Lestari, Rianna, Taftarzani, 2016:206).

2.8 TECHNOLOGICAL REVOLUTION OF GADGETS

The technological revolution that has been taking place over the past few years has had a variety of
effects on people’s daily lives in their homes. New media technologies have become an integral
aspect of today’s society and have caused societal changes. The household is one of the social aspects
that has been impacted. New media technology has become an integral aspect of the family and
home. This is an example of how numerous technologies, such as cell phones, smart phones, laptops,
game consoles, and so on, affect the individuals who live in the house. It is clear that technology has a
part in everyday life. The study showed that the new media technology has a negative impact on
family social interactions (McGrath, 2012).
11

2.9 USAGE OF GADGETS AND ITS EFFECT ON FAMILIES’ RELATION

Lestari, Riana & Taftarzani (2016) revealed that increased use of gadgets can affect the overall
function of the family as the first groups that make up the personality of the person as well as the
effect on the pattern of family communication. Chatzitheochari and Mullan (2019) found out that
children spent more time around their parents in 2015 than in 2000. This equates to just over half an
hour extra a day (347 minutes per day in 2000 and 379 minutes in 2015). Notably, all of this
additional time near parents was spent at home.
12

CONCLUSION

To summarize, the use of technology has both positive and negative effects on a person’s life.

Excessive usage of a gadget will most likely result in self-isolation, which will lead to less emotional

and physical engagement with family members. Excessive use of devices has a negative impact on

family relationships, as indicated by poor interaction with family. As new technology advances, the

negative consequences of that technology continue to grow. These new media tools have been so

integrated into everyone's lives, especially in family connections, that they are already having a

negative impact. Increased use of gadgets can affect the overall function of the family as the first

groups that make up the personality of the person as well as the effect on the pattern of family

communication. One of these effects is the increased difficulty of direct interaction between family

members. Being addicted to mobile phones can ruin the relationship between friends and family. This

is because when they are addicted, they usually don’t come out of their room and refuse to

communicate with the family.
