PASSENGER BOARDING BRIDGE (PBB) OPERATION & MAINTENANCE

A. PURPOSE:
To implement and maintain, the smooth and quality Avio Bridges Operation. This procedure will be
beneficial for every PBB authorized individual to understand the basic guidelines regarding the safe
PBB Operation and Maintenance.

B. SCOPE:
This procedure is applicable for Passengers Boarding Bridges (PBBs) installed at JIAP Karachi.

C. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

C1. The AdlD ES (E/M) is process owner & overall responsible for effective operation and
maintenance of PBBs at JIAP.
C2. The concerned Sectional Head is responsible for quality operation, maintenance and
development matter of PBBs.
C3. Shift / operational Incharge / shift personnel are responsible for safe and secure operation
according to the SOP pertaining to the PBBs.
C4. Concerned PBB / E/M technician, mechanics / fitter, helper etc shall responsible for compliance
of their work as per their job descriptions during safe and sound execution of maintenance /
checks of PBBs.

D. DESCRIPTION:
D1. SHIFT HANDING / TAKING OVER:
D1.1 Shift Incharge (PBB) shall physically take over the charge of PBB Control Room, at the
time of reporting for duty ensuring proper handling / taking over and records of the keys /
tools / equipment etc. on the PBB Daily Operation Logbook (CAAF-070-KCMC).
D1.2 Shift Incharge shall check the serviceability status of all PBBs physically and also check
through IASS (Integrated Aircraft Stand System) which is installed in the control room of
PBB, and minor / emergency maintenance tools taking the charge over from preceding
shift. The daily checks shall be as follows, (but not limited):
D1.2.1 Serviceability status of all PBBs through IASS System
D1.2.2 Error massage screen on the IASS System
D1.2.3 Cleanness of PBBs. (if found dirty inform to janitorial section)
D1.2.4 Serviceability of PBBs roof top air conditioner units etc.
D1.2.5 Any special instruction from GOC / Maintenance Team or Section Head
regarding PBBs operations.
D1.3 If any deficiency / un-serviceability observed, it shall be recorded in the PBB Daily
Operation Logbook (CAAF-070-KCMC) and bring into the notice of maintenance staff &
sectional head.
D1.4 The observed deficiency / un-serviceability may also be communicated to GOC where
required in case of any unserviceable bridge.
D1.5 Shift Incharge shall be responsible for safeguarding / up keeping the PBB Control room.

D2. OPERATION OF PBBs:


D2.1 PBBs Shift Incharge / Team Leader / Shift Coordinator receive the ETA of aircraft at
PBBs Control Room from GOC before the time of arrival / landing of aircraft.
D2.2 The ETA, which includes the Flight Number, expected time of arrival, allotted PBB
No. and type of Aircraft, is logged in the Message Record Register (CAAF-073-KCMC).
D2.3 After receiving the ETA, PBB control room passes the given information to the concerned
Satellite Bridge Counter (Domestic or International).

D2.4 If ETA not passed by GOC to the PBB control room then there is no responsibility of PBB
controlling staff to do any operation. When ETA received then the PBB controlling staff
will operate the PBB.
D2.5 Before arrival of aircraft, the ABO / authorized PBB Officials shall physically inspect the
associated bridge and check all the sensors at different positions especially the
intermittent tunnel sensor and bumper sensors. The operation of said bridge by switching
on the HMI screen and check if there is any message, if the bridge is unable to operate
properly then report this nonconformity of the bridge to his Incharge for reallocation of
bridge in coordination with GOC.
D2.6 The engagement of single tunnel or dual will be informed by GOC to the PBB shift
incharge.
D2.7 As the aircraft has parked, the Ground Engineer of the concerned airline will allow PBB
operator / official for embarkation of the bridge to the aircraft, the PBB Official shall make
sure that the aircraft has parked on its own specified parking position, the engine of the
aircraft properly off and chocks are applied properly to the aircraft before initiating the
bridge movement to the aircraft. On single tunnel PBB# (12,13,15,17,22,27)one operator
and on dual tunnel PBB#(14,16,23,24,25,26) two operators will be detailed. On dual
tunnel the simultaneous operation is to start with engaging L1 L2 of aircraft. Preferably L1
of the aircraft have to be engaged first.
D2.8 After vigilant engagement of bridge with the aircraft, the PBB Official shall carefully check
the following aspects:
D2.8.1 PBB Wheel tyres are parallel to the bogy assembly.
D2.8.2 Before starting the PBB to engage with the aircraft the cab door should be
Locked. The forward movement is to be handled properly by looking any
obstacle in between aircraft and bridge, and the bumper should be atleast 2-3
inches away from aircraft then the bridge must stop.
D2.8.3 The operation mode of bridge is to be changed from manual to auto mode.
D2.8.4 Canopy curtain is fully engaged to the aircraft.
D2.8.5 Auto levelling sensor is engaged and working properly.
D2.8.6 The door of the aircraft is exactly on the levelling platform of the cab.
D2.8.7 The safety shoe should be placed beneath the door of aircraft.
D2.9 Note down the aircraft specification (type, registration and block on time)
D2.10 Aircraft specification shall be registered in the Block ON / Block OFF Register
(CAAF-072-KCMC)
D2.11 After completion the proceeding of passengers to aircraft and conformation of airline
official, ABO / PBB official shall disengage the bridge and consider the following steps:
D2.11.1 The aircraft door is properly closed before disembarkation of the bridge.
D2.11.2 The auto mode should be changed to manual then Canopy curtain will
disengage from the aircraft.
D2.11.3 No any obstructions like ground handling vehicles, human movements, ground
power cables etc, are in the way of PBB backward movement.
D2.11.4 Note down the PBB block off time.
D2.11.5 PBB is parked on its proper parking position.
D2.11.6 PBB Wheels are parallel to the bogy assembly.
D2.11.7 PBB Cab / Console cab direction is perpendicular to aircraft parking middle
line.
D2.11.8 The height of bridge cab shall be in the same height of Rotunda at PBB parking
position and it should be at level of 50% on the HMI screen.
D2.11.9 Each door of PBB is closed.

D2.12 All Specifications (flight No. block on time, block off time etc.) shall be passed to FIDS at
appropriate time.
D2.13 If bridge gets U/S during the half way to aircraft, PBB operator will inform immediately to
PBB Control Room then check main bridge configuration that’s effects the movement of
PBB like (main motor tripping, pre-operate limit switches & safety switches etc.) and take
remedial action if possible at the time with the help of Shift Technician / maintenance staff
(if available).
D2.14 This event shall be logged in PBB Operation Logbook (CAAF-070-KCMC) and bring into
the notice of GOC / Sectional Head.
D2.15 In case of VVIP / VIP movement, concerned shift Incharge shall remain present at
APRON side / or in the bridge cab to ensure that the controls / equipment of PBB
D2.16 During any weather warning, which is forecasted / notified by GOC, the PBB Control
Room immediately passes the instructions to Satellite Bridge Counter (Domestic and
International site).
D2.17 During that abnormal weather, the Cabin of the bridge and the Wheels shall must be
perpendicular to the bogy assembly.
D2.18 The wooden / rubber chocks must be applied to the bridges where the aircraft is engaged
with it. Wooden / rubber chocks may also be engaged with the bridges that are not
engaged with the aircraft, if required.
D2.19 If any PBB is unavailable for operation due to any cause, it shall be under noticed to Shift
Incharge and to GOC prior of landing of aircraft.
D2.20 Weather warning as thunder storm can be dangerous for PBB as well as for the aircraft,
so the power transmitting chains, PBB wheel brakes function, protection & safety / limit
switches, bridge elevation system, bolts etc must be proper maintained and serviceable
by the maintenance staff.

D3. MAINTENANCE OF PBBs:

D3.1 PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE:


D3.1.1 Preventive maintenance of PBB is executed on following schedule as per
procedure described in concerned Adelte (Manufacturer) Operation &
Maintenance manuals, following checklist and general good engineering
maintenance practice.

D3.1.2 PBB Maintenance Team(s) is responsible for executing preventive maintenance


of PBBs as per above frequency and schedule issued from the Office of JD
(Mechanical).
D3.1.3 The Maintenance Schedule shall be communicated to GOC and COO.
D3.1.4 PBB Maintenance Team(s) shall be responsible for maintaining all the records
of preventive maintenance according to the above-mentioned table of schedule
maintenance.
D3.2 CORRECTIVE / REPAIR MAINTENANCE:
D3.2.1 If any fault / un-serviceability is observed / identified, it shall be communicated to
Section head immediately and the concerned maintenance Incharge / team
shall review the fault and physically determine the cause of non-conformity on
site and will take immediate action to eliminate the cause of defect / break
down.

D3.2.2 If complaint involved replacement of any U/S component, the requisition shall be
raised to Supply Store with signature/ approval of site Incharge and JtD
(Mechanical).
D3.2.3 After corrective action, the complainant acknowledgment shall be done by
signature with date & time on the indiviual PBBs Maintenance Logbook
(CAAF-071-KCMC) and informed to Shift Incharge.
D3.2.4 Shift In charge shall inform GOC and Section Head and make a brief log of the
event in PBB Operation Logbook (CAAF-070-KCMC) and the UN serviceability
should be recorded in particular log book of respective bridge.

D4. MAINTENANCE STAFF / TOOLS:


D4.1 Maintenance team shall be responsible for following actions regarding maintenance of
PBBs and its Equipment:
D4.1.1 Maintenance/development area shall be properly cordon OFF during Major
repair & maintenance / development work.
D4.1.2 All Maintenance staff shall use maintenance uniform (dungaree) and
appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) during maintenance work.
D4.1.3 For On-site maintenance, maintenance staff will select the right tool for the right
job to avoid any incident / accident and inspect the Tools before and after the
Maintenance.
D4.1.4 Appropriate lifting devices should be used to lift / lower the bridge components
or bridge itself.
D4.1.5 Serviceable equipment will be monitored / under observation till the complete
satisfaction of user after repair and maintenance.

D5. BILLING PROCEDURE:


D5.1 For billing of PBB use the Firms software which is flight information and revenue
management system available in the software & apps option in the website
www.caaintranet.hqcaa.net.
D5.2 Click on the firm software and entered the “ID Password” there are many options like
Data processing, Data attestation, Reports etc will be opened.
D5.3 For billing first enter into the data processing option then press the Avio Bridge Option,
Set the appropriate operation start and operation end date.
D5.4 There are two options available for searching flights by using flight number or using flight
registration. When flight found press the ground operation “GO” New window will be
opened in which all flight information is available.
D5.5 Confirm the registration and the flight number then put the required information
Into the form and press the apply button.
D5.6 When entry added check the entry into the down window for conformation, the entry will
show with the registration “AB” which is Avio Bridge.
D5.7 In case if you found that the entered information in the software not correct and want to
correct that information double click into the “AB” Entry and put the correct information
then press the update button the entry will be updated.
D5.8 In case if entry is not added and found error message check the input information, the
FIDS information and the control tower information.
D5.9 Recheck all entered entries through B4 report, the Avio bridge exception report, the
Avio bridge not use report, and the count report which are available in the reports option.
D5.10 After Fifteen days print these above mention reports and submit hard copy to the billing
department of HQCAA and save soft copy for record.
