DRUG ACTION
Blocks dopamine receptors in chemorecep-tor trigger zone of CNS Stimulate motility of the upper GI tract and accelerates gastric emptying Therapeutic Effects: Decreased nausea and vomiting Decreased symptoms of gastric stasis Easier passage of nasogastric tube into the small bowel

INDICATIONS

CONTRAINDICATIONS

DRUG-DRUG INTERACTION
Additive CNS depression with other CNS depressants May increased absorption and risk of toxicity from cyphalospo-rin May affect the GI absorption of other orally administered drugs as a result of effect of GI motility May exaggerate hypotension during general anesthesia May increased neuromuscu-lar blockade from succinylcho-line May increased the effectiveness of levodopa.

ADVERSE REACTIONS
CNS: drowsiness, extrapyramidal reaction, restlessness, anxiety, depression, irritability, tartive dyskinesia CV: arrhythmias, hypertension, hypotension GI: constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, nausea Endo: gynecomastia

NURSING CONSIDERATIONS
Assess patient for nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention, and bowel sounds before and after administra-tion Assess patient for extrapyramidal side effects periodically throughout course of therapy Monitor tardive dyskinesia . usually occur after a year or more or continued therapy Assess patient for signs of depression periodically throughout therapy.
