Fats Presentation

Fats are greasy substances found in animals and some plants that serve as an energy storage form. They can be obtained from both plant sources like nuts, seeds, and oils, as well as animal sources like meat and dairy. Fats play important roles in the body like aiding nutrient absorption and protecting organs, while also providing a concentrated source of energy. The main types are triglycerides, and fats differ from oils in their solid versus liquid state depending on saturated fat content. Unsaturated fats are generally healthier than trans fats found in processed foods.

What is Fat?
❏ Fats are greasy substances found in the tissues
of animals and some plants. These fats are fuel
sources, and is the major storage form of
energy in the body.

2
Sources of Fat
❏ Fats are obtained from both plants and animals.
Plant fats such as nuts, seeds, avocados, olives
and oils are from plants like sunflowers, olives,
soybeans and safflowers.

3
Sources of Fat (cont’d)
❏ Animal fats can be found in various products
such as by-products of meat (carcass fat of
cattle and pigs, tallow, lard), by-products of fish
caught (fish oil), milk (milk fat, butter fat),
poultry and eggs.

5
Structure of Chemical
Composition
❏ Triglycerides are the most dominant
components of most food fats and oils.
Triglycerides are composed of the elements
carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. The minor
ones are monoglycerides and diglycerides.

6
Differences between Fats and Oils
❏ The main difference between fats and oils is
that fats are composed of high amounts of
saturated fatty acids which will take a solid form
at room temperature whereas oils are
composed of mainly unsaturated fatty acids
which will take a liquid form at room
temperature.

7
Fatty Acids
❏ Fatty acids are the fat in our bodies and the
food we eat. When digestion takes place, fats
are broken down into fatty acids which are then
absorbed into the blood. The molecules of fatty
acids are mostly joined in groups of three
creating a molecule known as a triglyceride.
