KANGAROO MOTHER CARE
Instruction: Below is the grading scale which will be used in rating your performance.

A. PURPOSES
To keep the baby warm
To make feeding easy
To lessen the episodes of apnea
For infection control
For early discharge of the mother and the baby
B. ASSESSMENT
Review the client’s record and orders to determine the need to do
the kangaroo mother care and if the baby’s condition permits the
procedure.
C. PLANNING
Think through the procedure, planning what should be done before doing
the KMC procedure. Determine what supplies are needed to perform the
procedure.
D. EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS
Support Binder /Piece of garment (about 1 square meter) folded
diagonally and secured with a knot)
Mothers’s clothing
Baby’s clothing (pre-warmed shirt, open at the front, diaper, hat, and
socks)
Thermometer
Blanket ( When needed)
E. PREPARATIONS
Ensure that the mother is fully recovered from any childbirth complications
Assess the baby’s condition.

1. Introduce yourself and verify the client’s identity.
Explain to the client what you are going to do and why it
is necessary, and how the client can cooperate
2. Observe appropriate infection control procedures.
Perform the handwashing
Put on gloves if necessary
3. Provide for client’s privacy
4. Check baby’s temperature

5. Ask the mother to wear loose clothing which can
accommodate the baby if not instruct the mother to
remove her top clothing.
6. Remove baby’s clothing (except the socks, hat(bonnet)
and diaper)
7. Place the baby in an upright position on the mother’s
chest directly against the mother’s skin.
• Ensure that the baby’s hips and elbows are flexed
into a froglike position,
• the head to one side in a slightly extended position
( allows the eye to eye contact between the mother
and the baby
8. With a piece of garment, secure the baby with a binder,
tied firmly (to prevent the baby from sliding out when the
mother stands) Not too tight (to prevent obstructions on the
baby’s movement or breathing.)
The Baby’s abdomen should not be constricted and should
be somewhere at the level of the mother’s epigastrium ( This
way baby has enough room for abdominal breathing.)
The top of the binder is just under the baby’s ear.
9. After positioning allow the mother to rest with the baby,
and encourage the mother to move around when she is
ready.

13 Record the date, time, frequency, and duration of the

G. EVALUATION
Conduct any follow-up indicated during your care of the mother and the child.
Ensure that both the mother and the baby are comfortable.
