· Example : Making contacts can help you get a foot in the door when it comes
to getting a job.
2. Too many chiefs and not enough Idians ( = there are too many people giving
orders and not enough people to carry them out ) : thừa thầy thiếu thợ
· Example : Everyone wants to be the brains of this project, but there are too
many chiefs and not enough Idians.
3. Sell ice to Eskimos ( = To persuade people to accept smth unnecessary or
peposterous ) : bán hàng khéo léo, thuyết phục đến mức cho người không
cần ( = bán lược cho sư )
· Example : Say what you will about Kim Kardashian, but there’s no denying
that she could sell ice to Eskimos. ( She could manage to sell unnecessary
things )
4. Down to the wire ( = until the last moment that it’s possible to do sth ) : tới
phút cuối cùng, đúng vào phút chót
· Example : I think the student council election will go down to the wire ( won
at last moment )
5. Get a second wind ( = regain strength or energy to continue in an activity that
needs a lot of effort ) : Lấy lại sức hoặc năng lượng để tiếp tục một công
việc cần nhiều năng lượng
· Example : I started to feel that I couldn’t walk any further so I stop to get a
second wind.
6. Have/hold all the aces ( = to be in strong position when you are competing
with sb else because you have all the advantages ) : ở vị trí quyền lực vì nắm
hết các lợi thế
· Example : In a situation like this, it’s the big companies who hold all the aces
7. A level playing field ( = a situation in which everyone has the same chance of
succeeding ) : sân chơi công bằng
· Example : If the tax systems are different in each European country, how can
industries start on a level playing field?
8. Blue in the face ( = wasting efforts because you will get no results ) : phí
công vì không mang lại kết quả gì
· Example : Lara argued with her mother until she was blue in the face, but still
she was made to wash the dishes.
9. Wear and tear ( = the damage happens to an object in ordinary use during a
period ) : sự hao mòn, xuống cấp xảy ra tự nhiên, không tránh khỏi
· Example : Seat covers on buses take a lot of wear and tear
10. Loom large ( = to seem important, worrying, and difficult to avoid ) :
· Example : The issue pff pay will loom large at this year’s conference.
11. Without/Beyond a shadow of a doubt ( = you are certain sth is true without a
doubt ) : Không chút nghi ngờ nào, chắc chắn rõ ràng
· Example : He is responsible beyond a shadow of a doubt
12. A shoulder to cry on ( = sb who listens to you with sympathy when you talk
about your problems ) : ai đó để chia sẻ, cảm thông với mình
· Example : She was always a shoulder to cry on for her friends
13. Jump the gun ( = do th too soon, especially without thinking carefully about
it ) : làm điều gì đó quá vội vã , quá sớm
· Example : They’ve only just met – isn’t it jumping the gun to be talking about
marriage already?
14. Get/let sb off the hook ( = allow sb to escape from a difficult situation or to
avoid doing sth they don’t want to do ) : thoát trách nhiệm, hết gặp trở ngại,
khó khăn, việc mình không muốn làm
· Example : Thanks for letting me off the hook. I didn’t want to attend that
party.
15. Go belly up ( = If a company or a plan goes belly up, it fails ) : Phá sản, thất
bại hoàn toàn
· Example : The business went belly up after only 6 months.
