The Gift of the Magi – Script
1st Act
Storyteller: Jim and Della were a young married couple living a comfortable life until one day, bad news
arrived.
Jim: My dear I have something to tell you. My salary was lowered, and now I will earn 20 dollars. We will have
to save money and live more simply.
Della: It's okay Jim. As long as we have each other everything will be fine.
-
Storyteller: Christmas Eve was near and Della wanted to give Jim something special. However, in all this time
she was only able to save one dollar and eighty-seven cents.
Della: I don't have enough money to buy Jim a present, I only have one dollar and eighty-seven cents saved
up. What can I do? She stands in front of the mirror and starts touching her hair.
Storyteller: The young couple had only two valuables. One was Jim's gold watch, which was missing its chain,
and the other was Della's hair, which was so long and beautiful that it seemed out of this world. So, Della had
decided to sell her hair to buy the gift.

2nd Act
In the beauty salon
Della: Good morning! Will you buy my hair?
Mrs. Sofronie (Hairdresser): Let me see… I'll pay you $20 for it.
Della: I accept it!
Mrs. Sofronie (Hairdresser): Good, come with me to the chair, I'll cut your hair.
Storyteller: Della got the money and now she had to find the perfect gift for her Jim. After much searching, she
found the perfect gift at a jewellery store.
In the jewellery store
Della: Good Afternoon! I am interested in this watch chain.
Saleswoman: It costs 21 dollars.
Della: Perfect, I'll buy it. This is the perfect gift for Jim. It will look great on his watch.
3rd Act
Storyteller: Finally, Christmas Eve arrived. Della had prepared Christmas dinner and was excited for Jim to
come home.
Della: Oh Jim you're finally here. I have already prepared the Christmas dinner.
Jim: Looks at her with a strange look of disillusion.
Della: Is something wrong? Is it my hair? I sold it to buy your present. Don't worry it will grow fast but don't
look at me like that and let's have dinner.
Jim: Puts the gift on the table - I also bought you a present but if you open it you will understand how I feel
now.
Della: Open her gift – Wow! these are the combs I have always wanted, thank you so much, Jim.
Jim: But now your hair is gone.
Della: Gives a look of disappointment- I also bought you a present.
Jim: Opens his gift
Della: It is a chain for your watch, it will fit perfectly.
Jim: Thank you very much Della but I sold my watch to buy your present. But all this doesn't matter, the only
thing that matters is that we have each other. Come on, let's eat our dinner and celebrate Christmas.
Storyteller: Normally it is thought that Christmas is just about giving and receiving gifts and all the material
possessions. But its true meaning is about showing love and caring to others and what we are willing to do to
achieve it.
Jim and Della understood that. They were the magi.
