Introduction
Purpose
The purpose of this document is to identify the supported platforms and product retirement dates
associated with Ellipse and associated third party products.
If this copy of the Supported Platforms Guide is included in with product documentation then it may not
be the most current version. The current version is provided through the ABB Enterprise Software
Customer Support Portal.
Scope
This document defines support and product retirement details for Ellipse and associated third party
products for the releases including Ellipse 8, Ellipse 6.3, Ellipse 6.1, Ellipse 5.2.3.8 and Ellipse 5.2.3.7.
The Product Release Lifecycle information, previously contained in this document, has been moved
into a separate document called Product Support Policy – Ellipse, available on the ABB Enterprise
Software Customer Support Portal.
Standard Languages
The current internationalisation policy is to provide Ellipse as standard in Australian English and US
English.
For Ellipse 8, customers who purchase the Internationalisation module receive all of the available
supported language translations (Russian, Canadian French, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian
Portuguese, and Simplified Chinese).
As each new version of Ellipse is released, it will only support English initially, followed by the other
languages in order of demand.
Ellipse 8 supports multi-lingual data entry and storage. The supported user interface and data entry
languages can be used together in the one Ellipse instance. Ellipse 8 does not translate customer
data that is entered or dynamically convert data between multiple languages.
Scope
Translation scope encompasses the following components:
Ellipse 8:
All core Ellipse online programs, including screens and messages
Ellipse core data tables (MSF010, MSF025 and MSF081)
Out of Scope
The following are not translated as standard and will be distributed in English only:
   Ellipse Online Help
Reporting subsystems such as RDL and Ellipse Reporting.
Ancillary products such as Approvals Manager may not be available in languages other than
    English.
Work Planner releases prior to 4.3 may not be available in all languages supported by Ellipse.
   Housekeeping and other scripts.
All technical user administrative interfaces (e.g., EAC Ellipse Admin Console).
   Web server
A user will thus receive all Ellipse messages and screens in the installed translated language, but
messages originating from the server OS, database, or web server will not be translated and will
therefore be presented in English.
Language Combinations
The Ellipse Internationalisation module in Ellipse 6.3.3 and earlier releases allows several multi-
language combinations:
en-au
ru-ru
es-la
pt-br
fr-ca
Language key:
   en-au Australian English
   ru-ru Russian
   es-la Latin-American Spanish
   pt-br Brazilian Portuguese
   fr-ca Canadian French
The following sections outline the platform, transaction monitor, database, and scheduler combinations
for the releases of Ellipse currently in use. This information is provided as a guide for customers
planning their migration path. Since versions and options are subject to change, customers should
always confirm the availability of a specific platform combination with their ABB Account Manager.
Platform Availability
This document will assist customers to determine their operating system, database and TP system
upgrades. However, customers should always confirm the availability of a specific platform for an
Ellipse release with their ABB Enterprise Software Account Manager prior to ordering.

Ellipse 8
Ellipse 8 introduces a large number of technical differences and simplification of the software involved
in delivering the Ellipse suite.
                              Visual Studio:
Microsoft Windows 7, Approvals Manager Office 2007 or above
Windows 8 Outlook Plugin
                                 Smart Excel Plugin
Notes :
1. Visual Studio - an integrated development environment (IDE) from Microsoft used to provide
plugins for Office; particularly the Smart Excel Plugin and Approvals Manager Outlook Plugin
2. Ellipse Appliance
   a. The Ellipse Appliance comes preconfigured with automation around the time consuming
processes of software installation, operating system install, and complete environment
creation configured for availability. Ellipse has been tested and scaled based on specific
hardware configurations to provide predictable performance and availability. Customers
should view the Ellipse appliance as a black box. Importantly for customers, this reduces the
support costs and total cost of ownership for Ellipse 8.
   b. The Appliance embeds open source tools, libraries, components and products. These are
configured and tested in combination. Importantly, customers do not need to individually
support these third party components. Customers do not need to obtain separate support
        contracts for the embedded components.
    c. The Ellipse Appliance simplifies the delivery and management of Ellipse 8. The delivery
installs and patches the combination of software, settings and machine resource allocations to
ensure Ellipse operates as it was designed and tested.
   d. The Ellipse Appliance is intended to lower the cost of ownership for customers. By utilizing the
Ellipse Appliance the support teams can be confident that the appliance is installed and
configured as it was designed and tested.
   e. Whilst the individual components of the appliance can operate under different deployment
models such as VMware. The Ellipse Appliance deployment and management has not been
tested under VMware and as such the Ellipse Appliance is not warranted under VMware. ABB
may ask customers to reproduce any problems under the standard installation process.
3. Ellipse 8’s operating system is Oracle Linux, which is a Red Hat Enterprise Linux compatible
distribution repackaged and redistributed and supported by Oracle. Customers should purchase
commercial technical support from Oracle Support to ensure they have access to patch
   distributions.
4. The Oracle Linux support lifecycle can be found at the following location.
   http://www.oracle.com/us/support/library/elsp-lifetime-069338.pdf. Noting that Oracle Enterprise
Linux 5 is supported through to March 2017 with Oracle Linux 6 supported through to March 2021.
Additional support information can be found at the following link

Your ABB Enterprise Software Account Executive can arrange an Ellipse 8 architecture presentation
to familiarize yourself with these changes.
       Deployment
                                                            General description
       Architecture
The Ellipse 8 appliance represents an advanced Asset Management capability in a box which, most
importantly for customers, reduces the support costs and total cost of ownership for Ellipse 8. There
are many good reasons for this:
    a. The Ellipse Appliance comes preconfigured with significant automation around the time
consuming processes of software installation, operating system installation, and complete
environment creation including nearly all typical post-installation configured activities for high
availability. Ellipse has been tested and scaled based on specific hardware configurations to
        provide predictable performance and availability.
The delivery
installs and patches the combination of software, settings and machine resource allocations to
ensure Ellipse operates as it was designed and tested.
     d. The Ellipse Appliance is intended to lower the cost of ownership for customers by utilizing the
Ellipse Appliance the support teams can be confident that the appliance is installed and
configured as it was designed and tested.
     e. Whilst the individual components of the appliance can technically operate under different
deployment models such as VMware. The Ellipse Appliance deployment and management
has not been tested under VMware and as such the Ellipse Appliance is not warranted under
VMware. ABB may ask customers to reproduce any problems under the standard installation
        process.
Note:
    1. The Ellipse appliance is engineered to maintain compatibility with previously certified platforms
and are consider low risk of presenting issues, however as ABB may not have direct access to
each platform, explicit testing of later version of the appliance on each platform may not have
       been possible.
The following table lists hardware platforms upon which ABB customers have successfully performed
manual installations of Ellipse 8 and which ABB currently supports as non-Appliance deployments:
Customers wishing to utilize hardware platforms not on the list should undergo a certification process
with ABB, as outlined in section "Ellipse 8 Non-Appliance Hardware Certification Process" below.
The result of completing this process is to become listed in the table.
Customers wishing to use virtualisation platforms such as VMware acknowledge that under such
deployment configurations, ABB does not control the physical hardware and as such can make only
limited representations regarding performance of the system, especially when “custom” provisioning
and or resource sharing configurations begin to creep into deployments.

Notes:
    1. ABB does not currently have this platform available in-house; however, as the major third
party vendors support this platform, an evaluation of the risks has been performed and
determined to be low. ABB will support and resolve any issues relating to this platform
combination in line with the Ellipse Support Policy. Software distributions will be based on an
earlier version of one or more third party products.
    2. Several third party components are only supported by the original vendor running on a 32-bit
Windows Server 2008 platform. The only components that are supported running on Windows
Server 2008 R2 (64-bit) are those based on WebSphere 7.0. Note that at present, ABB does
not currently have Windows 2008 R2 in-house; however, as IBM supports this platform, an
evaluation of the risks has been performed and determined to be low. ABB will support and
resolve any issues relating to this platform combination in line with the Ellipse Support Policy.
Software distributions will be based on an earlier version of one or more third party products.
Transactional/Production
As of the 6.3.3 release, ABB re-introduced support for RDL core reports as part of the standard
customer support agreement. This includes over 600 text-based reports.

                       Server databases Server databases
Note 1: ABB recommends that the Operating System for the Report Server is deployed only for the
Business Objects application.
Note 2: Premium and Platinum – Business Objects requires separate report servers for each instance
of the Ellipse environments (e.g., Development, Test and Production). This will require customers to
either have separate Windows Servers (e.g., Dev, Test and Prod) or, alternatively, the customer could
choose to use solutions such as VMware to separate the different environments. Separate report
servers are the only ABB supported deployment option.
Note 3: Business Objects supports a variety of other platforms, application servers and browsers
natively. However, Premium/Platinum – Business Objects is only supported in the above
environments.
Note 4: Connectivity uses the native clients (Oracle Net Client, DB2 Client, and ODBC). Connectivity
is needed for the Ellipse Database and the Business Objects Repository. If the database is different
for Ellipse to the Business Objects Repository, the relevant connectivity would be required for each
(i.e., if Ellipse is Oracle and Repository is SQL Server).
Note 5: The Business Objects repository can be deployed as a separate schema within the Ellipse
database or on its own Database instance. Which option is chosen depends on a number of site
specific factors including Server capacity and Database product licensing.
Note 6: ABB recommends that the link between the report server and the repository must be a
minimum of a 100 MBit link.
Note 7: Premium/Platinum – Currently includes an embedded Business Objects license – mechanism
for deployment of reports is via InfoView.
Note 8: Premium/Platinum – Currently includes an embedded Business Objects license – uses Web
Intelligence for creation of all standard reports. Premium/Platinum customers can develop their own
reports in either Web Intelligence or embedded Business Objects Desktop Intelligence (full client).
However, only Web Intelligence reports provide integration with the Ellipse application (i.e., Mincom
Scheduler, front end reporting, same sign-on).
Note 9: Premium/Platinum – The Apache Tomcat software is released with the solution as standard.
Minor revisions of both Apache and Tomcat are supported; however, the customer must supply and
install their own copies of these versions for use with Ellipse Reporting.
Note 10: Effective from Ellipse 6.3.3, Transactional/Production Reporting is the supported base
reporting solution.
Note 11: Customers are advised this release of Ellipse Reporting will continue to be offered in English
as the standard solution.

Note 3: Business Objects supports a variety of other platforms, application servers and browsers
natively. However, MER – Business Objects is only supported in the above environments.
Note 4: Connectivity uses the native clients (Oracle Net Client, DB2 Client, and ODBC). Connectivity
is needed for the Ellipse database and the Business Objects repository. If the database is different for
Ellipse to the Business Objects repository, the relevant connectivity would be required for each (i.e., if
Ellipse is Oracle and the repository is SQL Server).
Note 5: The Business Objects repository can be deployed as a separate schema within the Ellipse
database, or on its own database instance. Which option is chosen depends on a number of site
specific factors including server capacity and database product licensing.
Note 6: ABB recommends that the link between the report server and the repository must be a
minimum of a 100 MBit link.
Note 7: ABB's standard mechanism for deployment of reports is via InfoView.
Note 8: MER uses Web Intelligence for creation of all standard reports. Customers can develop their
own reports in either Web Intelligence or Business Objects Desktop Intelligence (full client). However,
only Web Intelligence reports provide integration with the Ellipse application (i.e., Mincom Scheduler,
front end reporting, same sign-on).
Note 9: The Apache Tomcat software is released with the solution as standard. Minor revisions of
both Apache and Tomcat are supported; however, the customer must supply and install their own
copies of these versions for use with Business Objects
Note 10: For this release, ABB supports the RDL infrastructure required to run RDL reports. ABB also
supplied all existing RDL reports that we may have shipped in the past as part of the core product,
however, these reports were provided as is, are NOT maintained by ABB, and are NOT covered under
the standard customer support agreements.
Note 11: Business Objects is only supported on Windows Server 2003 32-bit versions.
Note 12: Customers are advised this release of Ellipse Reporting will continue to be offered in English
as the standard solution.

Standard Edition &SP1) with Sun JVM 1.4.2.02
                                                      (Notes 1 & 2)
Versions below 6.01 required if ability to upload and store Active Directory 2000 SP3 & SP4
PDFs in the repository is desired; otherwise versions 5.x, 6.x
                                                               Active Directory 2003
and 7.x supported.
Note 1: ABB recommends that the operating system for the report server is deployed only for the
Business Objects application.
Note 2: Ellipse Reporting requires separate report servers for each instance of the Ellipse
environments (e.g., Development, Test and Production). This will require customers to either have
separate Windows Servers (Dev, Test and Prod), or alternatively the customer could choose to use
solutions such as VMware to separate the different environments. Separate report servers are the only
ABB supported deployment option.
Note 3: Business Objects supports a variety of other platforms, application servers and browsers
natively. However, MER – Business Objects is only supported in the above environments.
Note 4: Connectivity uses the native clients (Oracle Net Client, DB2 Client, and ODBC 2000).
Connectivity is needed for the Ellipse database and the Business Objects repository. If the database is
different for Ellipse to the Business Objects repository, the relevant connectivity would be required for
each (i.e., if Ellipse is Oracle and the repository is SQL Server).
Note 5: The Business Objects repository can be deployed as a separate schema within the Ellipse
database, or on its own database instance. ABB recommends using the same database for both.
Note 6: ABB recommends that the link between the report server and the repository must be a
minimum of a 100 MBit link.
Note 7: ABB’s standard mechanism for deployment of reports is via InfoView.
Note 8: MER uses Web Intelligence for creation of all standard reports. Customers can develop their
own reports in either Web Intelligence or Business Objects full client. However, only Web Intelligence
reports provide integration with the Ellipse application (i.e., Mincom Scheduler, front end reporting).
Note 9: The Apache Tomcat software is released with the solution as standard. Minor revisions of
both Apache and Tomcat are supported; however, the customer must supply and install their own
copies of these versions for use with Business Objects.
Note 10: Business Objects is only supported on Windows Server 2003 32-bit versions.
Note 11: ABB will continue to support Ellipse Reporting based on Business Objects 6.5 for customers
operating Ellipse versions 5.2.3.7/8 in accordance with the published Release Lifecycle map, and will
not be offering Business Objects XI support on these releases. Customers wishing to utilize Ellipse
Reporting based on BO XI should plan to upgrade to Ellipse 6.3.3.
Note 12: Customers are advised this release of Ellipse Reporting will continue to be offered in English
as the standard solution.
