Internationalisation and Translation

Standard Languages
The current internationalisation policy is to provide Ellipse as standard in Australian English and US
English.
For Ellipse 8, customers who purchase the Internationalisation module receive all of the available
supported language translations (Russian, Canadian French, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian
Portuguese, and Simplified Chinese).
As each new version of Ellipse is released, it will only support English initially, followed by the other
languages in order of demand.
Ellipse 8 supports multi-lingual data entry and storage. The supported user interface and data entry
languages can be used together in the one Ellipse instance. Ellipse 8 does not translate customer
data that is entered or dynamically convert data between multiple languages.

Scope
Translation scope encompasses the following components:

Ellipse 8:
 All core Ellipse online programs, including screens and messages
 Ellipse core data tables (MSF010, MSF025 and MSF081)

Ellipse 6.3.3 and prior:

 All core Ellipse programs launched from the Ellipse Desktop
 Ellipse login and Desktop screens
 Ellipse core data tables (MSF010, MSF025 and MSF081)
 WebView for Ellipse 6.3.3

Out of Scope
The following are not translated as standard and will be distributed in English only:
 Ellipse Online Help
 Reporting subsystems such as RDL and Ellipse Reporting.
 Ancillary products such as Approvals Manager may not be available in languages other than
English.
 Work Planner releases prior to 4.3 may not be available in all languages supported by Ellipse.
 Housekeeping and other scripts.
 All technical user administrative interfaces (e.g., EAC Ellipse Admin Console).

Ellipse 6.3.3 and earlier

Translation Stack
All translations are built to satisfy the end user GUI environment only, and the server-based technical
and environmental components will remain in English, i.e.:
 Server operating system
 Database server

Confidential and Proprietary

9
Ellipse and Related Products Supported Platforms

 Web server
A user will thus receive all Ellipse messages and screens in the installed translated language, but
messages originating from the server OS, database, or web server will not be translated and will
therefore be presented in English.

Language Combinations
The Ellipse Internationalisation module in Ellipse 6.3.3 and earlier releases allows several multi-
language combinations:

en-au ru-ru es-la pt-br fr-ca

en-au    

ru-ru 

es-la   

pt-br   

fr-ca   

Language key:
 en-au Australian English
 ru-ru Russian
 es-la Latin-American Spanish
 pt-br Brazilian Portuguese
 fr-ca Canadian French

Ellipse Version Considerations

A newer language pack is usually backward compatible with previous Ellipse versions from 5.2.3.7
onwards.
WebView is only available with language packs for 6.3.3.

Supported Platforms and Releases

The following sections outline the platform, transaction monitor, database, and scheduler combinations
for the releases of Ellipse currently in use. This information is provided as a guide for customers
planning their migration path. Since versions and options are subject to change, customers should
always confirm the availability of a specific platform combination with their ABB Account Manager.

Third Party Product Support

Once a version of a third party software product is no longer supported by its vendor or ABB no longer
has access to vendor support and maintenance, ABB cannot analyse or correct problems that are
associated with an unsupported or unsupportable release.
Not every version of a third party product is supported with every Ellipse version. For third party
product support, please refer to the relevant section of this document for your particular Ellipse
release. The published third party product end-of-life dates can found in the last section of this
document.

Platform Availability
This document will assist customers to determine their operating system, database and TP system
upgrades. However, customers should always confirm the availability of a specific platform for an
Ellipse release with their ABB Enterprise Software Account Manager prior to ordering.

Ellipse 8 Appliance Deployments Lower Total Cost!

The Ellipse 8 appliance represents an advanced Asset Management capability in a box which, most
importantly for customers, reduces the support costs and total cost of ownership for Ellipse 8. There
are many good reasons for this:
a. The Ellipse Appliance comes preconfigured with significant automation around the time
consuming processes of software installation, operating system installation, and complete
environment creation including nearly all typical post-installation configured activities for high

Note:
1. The Ellipse appliance is engineered to maintain compatibility with previously certified platforms
and are consider low risk of presenting issues, however as ABB may not have direct access to
each platform, explicit testing of later version of the appliance on each platform may not have
been possible.

Ellipse 8 Appliance Hardware Certification Process

The Ellipse Appliance is certified with the vendor hardware platforms that are identified in section
Ellipse 8 Appliance Certified Hardware above. Vendor platform makes/models remain listed in the
Supported Platforms Guide even if they become superseded and are no longer available from the
platform vendor. Later models of the same vendor hardware family published in this Supported
Platforms Guide are at lower risk of presenting issues but not automatically supported.
To ensure that the Ellipse Appliance can operate in production on a Customer’s selected Vendor
hardware platform, the Customer must engage ABB Enterprise Software consulting services, backed
by ABB Enterprise Software R&D, to work with the Customer to test and validate the
hardware/platform. As the validation processes may identify issues that will take time to resolve, it is
recommended to scope sufficient project time to complete the validation and resolve all issues. ABB
Enterprise Software consulting services shall work with the Customer to determine the scope, time
and cost of the validation exercises taking into account the following variables:
1. Previous experience indicates that the appliance would typically requires little or no modification to
work on most proposed hardware platforms. While ABB Enterprise Software hold a high degree of
confidence in the general processes and suitability of the appliance for installation and operation
across a range of hardware makes and models, no guarantee is made that we will certify the
appliance on all hardware makes, models and configurations.
2. ABB Enterprise Software maintains strong relationships with a number of vendors, however ABB
Enterprise Software are not provided access to every hardware/platform combination for testing
purposes. Accordingly the Customer is required to provide ABB Enterprises Software with
unrestricted access to the specified hardware/platform combination and Vendor support in order to
complete the validation process.
3. ABB Enterprise Software will time limit the validation effort to 2 weeks duration.
4. ABB Enterprise Software requires a minimum of 20 working days’ notice to schedule resources.
Consulting project support shall be delivered remotely via phone and email support only.
On completion of the validation exercise, including the sign off of the installation and deployment
processes, ABB Enterprise Software will schedule the update of the Supported Platforms Guide to
reflect the hardware/platform combination at that point in time for the specified release.

Ellipse 8 Non-Appliance Hardware

Ellipse 8 installations which are not based on Appliance technology are eligible for support on
platforms, physical or virtual, that support the version of Oracle Linux required by the relevant Ellipse 8
release. Customers that elect to manually install the individual Ellipse 8 server types as part of a non-
Appliance deployment are reminded of the significant additional responsibilities they are assuming in
relation to everything from base operating system provisioning, installation and configuration through
to product installation, configuration, troubleshooting, tuning as well as upgrades to all the components
and configurations.

Ellipse and Related Products Supported Platforms

The following table lists hardware platforms upon which ABB customers have successfully performed
manual installations of Ellipse 8 and which ABB currently supports as non-Appliance deployments:

Server Ellipse Oracle Linux

Server Model Virtualisation Notes
Vendor Version Version

Customers wishing to utilize hardware platforms not on the list should undergo a certification process
with ABB, as outlined in section "Ellipse 8 Non-Appliance Hardware Certification Process" below.
The result of completing this process is to become listed in the table.
Customers wishing to use virtualisation platforms such as VMware acknowledge that under such
deployment configurations, ABB does not control the physical hardware and as such can make only
limited representations regarding performance of the system, especially when “custom” provisioning
and or resource sharing configurations begin to creep into deployments.

Ellipse 8 Non-Appliance Hardware Certification Process

Ellipse 8 installations not based on Appliance technology fall into two categories:
1. Installation of Ellipse 8 server types on physical hardware running Oracle Linux
2. Installation of Ellipse 8 server types on virtual servers running Oracle Linux
Vendor platform makes/models remain listed in the Supported Platforms Guide even if they become
superseded and are no longer available from the platform vendor. Later models of the same vendor
hardware family published in this Supported Platforms Guide are at lower risk of presenting issues but
not automatically supported.
Customers wishing to deploy on VMware should also review ABB positioning in section “VMware
Virtual Environments” below, relevant to Ellipse 8 platforms.
To ensure that Ellipse 8 can operate in production on a Customer’s selected non-Appliance
deployment platform, the Customer should engage ABB Enterprise Software consulting services,
backed by ABB Enterprise Software R&D, to work collaboratively to test and validate the
hardware/virtual platform. As the validation processes may identify issues that will take time to resolve,
it is recommended to scope sufficient project time to complete the validation and resolve all issues.
ABB Enterprise Software consulting services shall work with the Customer to determine the scope,
time and cost of the validation exercises taking into account the following variables:
1. Previous experience indicates that Ellipse 8 installations on servers running Oracle Linux typically
require little or no modification to work on most proposed platforms. While ABB Enterprise
Software holds a high degree of confidence in the general processes and suitability of the Ellipse
8 installation method, no guarantee can be made regarding the ability of untested hardware and or
virtualisation software combinations.

Note 1: ABB recommends that the Operating System for the Report Server is deployed only for the
Business Objects application.
Note 2: Premium and Platinum – Business Objects requires separate report servers for each instance
of the Ellipse environments (e.g., Development, Test and Production). This will require customers to
either have separate Windows Servers (e.g., Dev, Test and Prod) or, alternatively, the customer could
choose to use solutions such as VMware to separate the different environments. Separate report
servers are the only ABB supported deployment option.
Note 3: Business Objects supports a variety of other platforms, application servers and browsers
natively. However, Premium/Platinum – Business Objects is only supported in the above
environments.
Note 4: Connectivity uses the native clients (Oracle Net Client, DB2 Client, and ODBC). Connectivity
is needed for the Ellipse Database and the Business Objects Repository. If the database is different
for Ellipse to the Business Objects Repository, the relevant connectivity would be required for each
(i.e., if Ellipse is Oracle and Repository is SQL Server).
Note 5: The Business Objects repository can be deployed as a separate schema within the Ellipse
database or on its own Database instance. Which option is chosen depends on a number of site
specific factors including Server capacity and Database product licensing.
Note 6: ABB recommends that the link between the report server and the repository must be a
minimum of a 100 MBit link.
Note 7: Premium/Platinum – Currently includes an embedded Business Objects license – mechanism
for deployment of reports is via InfoView.
Note 8: Premium/Platinum – Currently includes an embedded Business Objects license – uses Web
Intelligence for creation of all standard reports. Premium/Platinum customers can develop their own
reports in either Web Intelligence or embedded Business Objects Desktop Intelligence (full client).
However, only Web Intelligence reports provide integration with the Ellipse application (i.e., Mincom
Scheduler, front end reporting, same sign-on).

DB2 Client (8.1 & 8.2)
ODBC MDAC 2.7 &2.8
(Note 4)

Business Objects Repository Oracle 9i

DB2 (8.1 & 8.2)
SQL Server 2000 (SP3 & SP4)

Adobe Acrobat LDAP Server

Versions below 6.01 required if ability to upload and store Active Directory 2000 SP3 & SP4
PDFs in the repository is desired; otherwise versions 5.x, 6.x
Active Directory 2003
and 7.x supported.

Note 1: ABB recommends that the operating system for the report server is deployed only for the
Business Objects application.
Note 2: Ellipse Reporting requires separate report servers for each instance of the Ellipse
environments (e.g., Development, Test and Production). This will require customers to either have
separate Windows Servers (Dev, Test and Prod), or alternatively the customer could choose to use
solutions such as VMware to separate the different environments. Separate report servers are the only
ABB supported deployment option.
Note 3: Business Objects supports a variety of other platforms, application servers and browsers
natively. However, MER – Business Objects is only supported in the above environments.
Note 4: Connectivity uses the native clients (Oracle Net Client, DB2 Client, and ODBC 2000).
Connectivity is needed for the Ellipse database and the Business Objects repository. If the database is
different for Ellipse to the Business Objects repository, the relevant connectivity would be required for
each (i.e., if Ellipse is Oracle and the repository is SQL Server).
Note 5: The Business Objects repository can be deployed as a separate schema within the Ellipse
database, or on its own database instance. ABB recommends using the same database for both.
Note 6: ABB recommends that the link between the report server and the repository must be a
minimum of a 100 MBit link.
Note 7: ABB’s standard mechanism for deployment of reports is via InfoView.
Note 8: MER uses Web Intelligence for creation of all standard reports. Customers can develop their
own reports in either Web Intelligence or Business Objects full client. However, only Web Intelligence
reports provide integration with the Ellipse application (i.e., Mincom Scheduler, front end reporting).
Note 9: The Apache Tomcat software is released with the solution as standard. Minor revisions of
both Apache and Tomcat are supported; however, the customer must supply and install their own
copies of these versions for use with Business Objects.
Note 10: Business Objects is only supported on Windows Server 2003 32-bit versions.
Note 11: ABB will continue to support Ellipse Reporting based on Business Objects 6.5 for customers
operating Ellipse versions 5.2.3.7/8 in accordance with the published Release Lifecycle map, and will
not be offering Business Objects XI support on these releases. Customers wishing to utilize Ellipse
Reporting based on BO XI should plan to upgrade to Ellipse 6.3.3.

Note 12: Customers are advised this release of Ellipse Reporting will continue to be offered in English
as the standard solution.

Ellipse Reporting (General)

Support Plan for Ellipse Reporting and Business Objects Versions
As at 31st December 2014, ABB will no longer renew support, maintenance, software distributions or
product licenses for SAP Business Objects (BOBJ) products. The information regarding BOBJ remains
for reference purposes only. Dates are correct at the time of publishing, but may change at the
discretion of SAP.
SAP Business Objects ceased standard support for BO 6.5 30 June 2009. Support and product
licenses for these versions are no longer available.
If you have any questions regarding your support requirements or migration plans for Ellipse Reporting
and BO, please contact your ABB Account Manager.

Key Points
 Customers are advised this release of Ellipse Reporting will continue to be offered in English as
the standard solution.
 ABB will continue to Support Ellipse Reporting based on Business Objects related components
(eg Reports and Universes), in accordance with the published Release Lifecycle map. An upgrade
path to Ellipse 8 Production Reporting is available to customers currently using Ellipse versions in
limited support.
Note: Other Ellipse Reporting version-specific details are provided under Ellipse Server headings

VMware Virtual Environments

ABB supports customers running Ellipse 6.3.3 or prior in a VMware virtual machine environment,
provided that the particular operating system release is supported by both Ellipse and VMware and
that the third party products in use are supported running in a VMware environment.
While ABB products are expected to function correctly in a VMware virtual environment, the
performance characteristics may differ from standalone server implementations. To alleviate the risk of
the difference, it is recommended that customers follow VMware’s best practices, particularly in
regards to tuning and server loading. If customers wish to run their production Ellipse environments
within a VMware virtual environment, it is recommended that the implementation is reviewed as part of
an ABB Technical Planning Study.
Note that should ABB suspect that the virtualization layer is the root cause of an issue, ABB reserves
the right to ask the customer to reproduce the issue on native hardware and if necessary will request
the customer contact the appropriate VMware support provider to resolve the VMware issue.
ABB may, at its discretion, support the non-Production use of Ellipse in a VMware environment where
explicit third party support of VMware does not exist.
