Winter is Coming
“I need your help”, says Jon Snow to the 2 Survival Consultant teams, with a worried expression that
reveal his deepest & darkest fears of an impending calamity.
A cold wind was blowing from the north, and it made the trees rustle like living things. The villagers of
Winterfell are in grave danger.
Winter is coming and this time it will last for 3 whole years. No Sun. No Light. No Escape. The darkness
will bring hungry predators to their doorstep, each wild animal tougher to beat in combat than the other.
Each battle with the beast will take its toll, each duel will extract its price - in blood, no less.
There are 250 Men, 120 Women, 30 Children in the village who live in 30 independent houses in close
proximity to each other. There are other villages in the vicinity although they are miles apart with little or
no scope of accessibility or connectivity once winter sets in 3 months. The village is surrounded on one
side by a thick forest of dying trees. The only vegetables resilient enough to grow are Lettuce and
Cabbage. They are usually cooked in pots over an open fire which is more or less same method they
employ for melting fresh snow to water. Some of the houses in the village may not withstand
(structurally) the stormy cold winds. This risk also extends to most cattle shelters in the village. The
village physician has recommended that each family should take stock of their warm wear and sew
additional layers of cloth to improve its ability to keep the killer cold out.
Davos, the village headman just mediated and diffused another heated argument between Gregory the
Carpenter and Gendry the Blacksmith who once lived as brothers to each other. Shockingly enough,
Damascus, the shearer of village sheep, was instigating the Carpenter to raise his weapon and strike the
Blacksmith down. As usual, Ivan the stonecutter took sides with the Blacksmith as his sister is wedded to
him. Deeply worried about the changing behaviour of his village folk he thinks out aloud “When the
snows fall and the white-winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives. Why then, do my brethren,
turn on each other?”
1. Identify the goal to be achieved. Ensure that it adheres to the S.M.A.R.T principle.
2. Recommend a survival and sustenance plan for the villagers for the next 3 years under the
following broad headings – Food, Water, Shelter, Health (& Safety), Livestock, Community.
3. Use the Eisenhower’s Matrix to identify what activities fall under what heading.
4. Create a to-do list that you will hand over to Davos for implementation.
