Courtesy
Courtesy means showing good manners and polite behavior. Its source is
kindness and affection. One who shows courtesy is called a courteous person.
He is always polite to others and hence respected by all. According to a
philosopher,
“Courtesy costs nothing but buys everything”.
Courtesy could be spread by writing good books. It can also be spread by
preaching good manners. All the prophets adopted this method. They taught
courtesy through their speeches and deeds. They themselves were the
embodiment of courtesy. Their manners and deeds were so good that people
were attracted to them. Therefore, the courtesy, politeness and kindness are the
qualities of prophets. These qualities can convert enemies into friends. Our holy
prophet (PBUH) said,
“The best among you is the one whose manners are the best”.
Good manners are infectious. They pass from one person to another and
influence the whole society. If we are polite to a man, he will be polite to others. In
this way, the courtesy and good manners are developed in a society. Lack of
good manners makes life dull, drab and dreary.
Courtesy is a prominent trait of a true Muslim. There are many benefits of
courtesy. First, it brings us joy. Secondly, courteous people become popular with
others. Thirdly, the courteous people can spread their ideas easily to attract and
influence the people. Therefore, we should be just and courteous in our dealings
with others. As it is said,
“Good manners keep the machinery of life oiled”.
So, it is our moral duty to promote courtesy to have a civilized and disciplined
social life on the Earth.
