CHAPTER 1
The Problem and its Background
Introduction
In today's generation, gadgets play a vital role in the educational field in order to
improve students skills and knowledge, but most students have difficulty keeping up
with what lesson their Teacher is teaching due to lack of gadgets and already struggling
due to lack of data or unstable internet connection, lack of time and lack of training, lack
of capabilities, which makes it difficult for students. In this study, it is difficult for some
Students who do not have the gadgets they need for online classes, especially when
the Teacher says that they need to show the application activity. But lack of gadgets
has also had negative effects on the students, it affects the academic performance.
The challenges in using gadgets is one of the issues Arellano university students
are currently facing. It’s an obstacle for ICT students that limits them from using
technology and their education in ICT. Since Arellano students are still learning via
online class, not all classes can be done smoothly because when it comes to using
gadgets, there's challenges for Arellano students that are encountered which includes
the environment, internet connectivity, gadgets used, availability of the
professors/teachers, applications used, distraction, and much more.
The role and importance for this research is to know what the issues are
regarding the usage of gadgets by Arellano university students and gather up data and
information on what issues that commonly occur and how it happened during online
class. Once the issues are identified, new solutions will now develop in which this will
help improve the usage of gadgets for the Arellano ICT students in the future.
We're interested in this research because globalization has altered our lives in
numerous ways, including the introduction of new technology. Students complain about
a lack of gadgets, those who have them complain even more can't do anything else,
and it's because of this - it's the most common issue among other students, and many
still do not understand. Due to a lack of use of gadgets, staying up with the new normal
the employment of gadgets in education builds a future foundation of
good/strong/progressive and productive people.
The purpose of this study is to find out how ICT students of Arellano University
Andres Bonifacio Campus deal with the various challenges they may face when using
tech -based devices during their online class and how they were able to survive in the
face of such challenges. To solve the problem that challenges grade 11 ICT students
encounter in their use of gadgets in today’s online.
Setting of the Study
The administration of Arellano University provided free prepaid internet so that
other students could acquire their modules without taking a trip to school; other students
lived far away from the Arellano University. As a result, education has undergone
significant transformations, with the growth of e-learning in which instruction is done
online and via digital platforms.

Theoretical Framework
In this part of this study, researchers found a theory that all about the challenges
encountered in using gadgets during online class. This study framed by Learning
Theory, Learning Theory is a process of interaction between students and educators
and learning resources in a learning environment. In the learning process, students are
seen as individuals who are unique and different from one another to have different
abilities such as academic abilities, interests, and background (Palennari, 2011). It is
entitled “Analysis of Utilization of Gadgets as Effective Learning Media in Innovation
Education to improve Student Learning Achievement” by Dewi Ratnasari and “Analysis
of the use of ICT’s in public and private schools from the Activity Theory” by Luis
Claudio Kubota (August 2016).
According to (Roschelle, 2003), in Utilization of Gadgets as Learning Resources
there are various educational benefits of mobile phone technologies that are most often
cited as; easily accessing content, integrating a broad range of educational activities,
supporting independent study and student organization, encouraging student
enthusiasm, supporting classroom-based collaboration and interaction as well as
supporting inquiry- based instruction and learning.
According to Lim (2002), inappropriate use of technology in education can lead to
negative effects which should be avoided while on the other hand effective use of ICTs
as teaching/learning resources and effective digital literacy skills has been associated
with significant increase in students' achievement. Students gain confidence as they get
engaged by their lecturers and sometimes work together with lecturers as co-workers in
an attempt to solve some technological problems.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
This chapter focuses on the discussion of the Review of Related Literature and
Studies to find a foreign and local Literature and Studies about on the situation of
determining the impact of lack of gadgets in learning
Foreign Literature
According to Dr. Radhika Kapur (2019), Integration of ICT into language
instruction has become a hot topic in the field of language education over the last two
decades. The favorable impacts of information and communication technology (ICT) on
pupils have been documented in research findings throughout the last two decades. In
today's quickly changing culture, EFL teachers are expected to take on new duties and
gain new skills. It is necessary to investigate the specific skills required for ICT to
improve language learning.
The use of ICT as a teaching tool focuses on gathering, analyzing, and
organizing information, allowing students to interact with a variety of media. Integration
of ICT includes deciding on the usage of various ICTs in each skill, the sorts of ICT
applications to be utilized, creating favorite activities, dealing with difficulties that arise
from the planned activities, and so on. Information and communication technologies
(ICTs) can be thought of as a new teaching and learning model.
The goal of this review study is to provide a thorough and comprehensive
understanding of the use of ICT in English teaching, as well as to examine how ICT may
be used to fulfill the changing educational demands of the modern period.
The purpose of this study is to provide a complete overview of the benefits and
drawbacks of using ICT in EFL classrooms as a teaching tool. Based on the foregoing
concerns, the goal of this review study is to shed light on how ICT contributes to the
English learning process and to identify characteristics that influence ICT
implementation success. In addition, some key recommendations will be presented to
maximize the positive use of ICT in EFL classrooms.
Local Literature
According to La Shun (2017), technology is something that is naturally intelligent
enough to either function or be regarded as having a function that intelligent entities
such as humans can understand. As the COVID-19 virus spreads over the world,
traditional face-to-face classes in educational institutions are being disrupted. These
educational institutions in the Philippines have switched to a Flexible Learning System
(FLS). Teachers and students in distant locations, on the other hand, face internet
access issues while using FLS for online teaching and learning activities. This challenge
is mitigated by adopting mobile solar-powered instructional technology equipment. His
research looked at the students' online learning experiences in higher education. They
identified the extent of challenges that students experienced, how the COVID-19
pandemic impacted their online learning experience, and the strategies that they used
to confront these challenges.
However, it isn't without its drawbacks. Because there are so many distractions
at home, some pupils lose focus. Struggling because they don't have enough money to
buy gadgets that can be used to help them study. lack of internet/ data connection.
Moreover, even if there were some ways to provide them with laptops, smartphones, or
other electronic devices. Everyone, especially those who live in remote locations,
requires connectivity (Dollanganger, 2020). In this case, Even families who can afford to
buy their own gadgets aren't assured to get good online education.
Foreign Studies
According to gstic (2021), in a study regarding challenges in using gadgets in
online classes, this suggests that the majority of the students has issues in internet
connectivity, their environment (such as background disturbance), and lack of access to
computers. These issues in online classes have become a primary disadvantage to
students that need to focus on their academics.
According to the Organization for economic co-operation and development
(oecd) there are reports about some sobering figures in different countries. Oecd
concluded that:
15% of the students don't have a quiet place to stay.
35% of the students are enrolled in schools where teachers don't have technical skills to
integrate digital technology in education.
And according to educause (2021), most students struggled in using gadgets due
to internet connectivity no matter their housing situation. Educause has concluded that
36% of the respondents in a survey suggests that the students are always, often, or
sometimes struggling with finding a reliable internet connection for their academic
needs. In a survey done by educause, it reveals that 16% of the students struggled in
rural areas while 9% of the students struggled in suburb areas, 8% in city, and 7% in
local towns. Since students are facing challenges when it comes to internet connection,
students need to get creative in order to stay in focus for their academic work.
Educause asked the respondents on where they go when they’re having an internet
connection issue and it shows that 43% of the respondents was via their home or
residence while followed by public space on campus (23%), family member’s house
(8%), friend’s house (7%), commercial business (6%), public space off-campus (5%),
and others (8%).
Local Studies
According to Menorca and his colleagues (2017) the main purpose of their study
is to determine the impact of gadgets in learning. The analyses and interpret the data of
the study, many gadgets such as cell phones, computers, and tablets used by the
students in learning. Using gadgets has a positive impact because the students have
more things to do but it also has a negative impact because the students are most
distracted by using gadgets
However, Betarmos, Diaz, Coloma, Lima, and Teh (2020), in their research
about the negative effects of cellular phones in academic performance. They gathered
the data to determine what are the most common negative effects of cellphone in
students in terms of physical aspects when they encounter lack of sleep. In
psychological aspects, the students can't concentrate in school which affects their
academic performance because the students are distracted by gadgets. The last aspect
that has been affected by cellphones is the behavior of the students. The researcher of
this study defined what are common negative effects and concluded many students
have been affected by the usage of gadgets. Many students encounter serious
problems that can affect their daily life.
Synthesis
Since the start of the pandemic, student’s online research has taken a steep
decline in phrases of motivation, precedence and necessity compared to their primary
physiological needs. To Gstic (2021), in a study regarding challenges in using gadgets
in online classes, this suggests that the majority of the students have issues in internet
connectivity, their environment (such as background disturbance), and lack of access to
computers. And to Educause (2021), most students struggled in using gadgets due to
internet connectivity no matter their housing situation. Everyone, especially those who
live in remote locations, requires connectivity (Dollanganger, 2020). In this case, even
families who can afford to buy their gadgets aren't assured to get good online education.
These challenges have proved that there are many ICT students that are struggling in
online classes because of internet connections, lack of access to computers and lack of
support.
CHAPTER III
METHODS AND PROCEDURE
This chapter focuses on the discussion of the research method and procedure
adhered to by the researchers in order to answer systematically specific problems
posed for investigation. Specifically, the methods and procedure, introductory
paragraph, methods of research, subjects/respondents of the study, sampling
technique, research instrument and procedure of data gathering were explained in this
chapter.
Methods of Research
The design selected for this research was qualitative in nature using interviews,
observation, questionnaires and documents to help determine who are the students that
experienced the challenges using gadgets during online class. Qualitative research
provides an understanding of a situation or phenomenon that tells the story rather than
determining cause and effect (Frankel & Wallen, 2003; Glesne, 1999)
Subjects/Respondents of the study
The respondents of the study are the students from Information Communication
and Technology (ICT) students in the Arellano University– Bonifacio Campus. Initially,
the researchers will have eight (8) respondents to participate in the study and
respondents will be done through random sampling, where anyone from the Information
Communication and Technology (ICT) students will have the opportunity to be a sample
in the study.
Sampling Technique
In this part, after the approval of providing the survey to the ICT students of
Arellano University, the researchers will be utilizing the Non-probability under
convenience. The reason why researchers decided to use this is because the
convenience sampling helps the researchers to easily collect data via using
respondents who are “convenient” and it can be used to make an easier statistic based
on how the students challenged issues encountered in using gadgets.
Research Instruments
A descriptive method was used to provide and gather information for the study.
The use of questionnaires is part of this method. The survey questionnaire was based
on the students that experienced the challenges of using gadgets during online class.
The descriptive method will consist of three parts: Page 1, will gather information such
as a person’s name, age, and gender. Page II, will be an assessment, multiple choice
that consisted of the challenges encountered in using gadgets during online class. Page
III, will gather checklist that consisted of the difficulties experienced using gadgets
during online class of Grade 11 ICT Students in Arellano University – Andres Bonifacio
Campus
Procedure of Data Gathering
The first thing we do is obtain the information we need, and the students who
face these challenges are our primary focus for gathering information. The researcher’s
objective is to gather Information from students who struggle using gadgets in online
classes. We'll create a survey to find out what kind of challenges students have during
online classes.
We prepare a survey form through Google Forms to collect the data we need,
and we need Approval before we proceed to share the link to other ICT students. We
will begin collecting data and analyzing the data provided by the respondents once they
have completed the survey form. The questionnaires were delivered by the researchers
to the schools concerned. Using Google forms to collect the answers of 2 main parts
includes their knowledge about the challenges.
CHAPTER IV
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
This chapter of the study includes the presentation of statistical data based on
the problems mentioned in the SOP, as well as the corresponding analysis and data
interpretation.

Summary of Findings
The study's findings were summarized according to the statement of the
problems stated in chapter 1.
1. What is the importance of using gadgets during online classes for ICT
students?
It was revealed that the gadgets help them do their activities, especially those in
the ICT strand, the more they use gadgets, according to the mean of 5 respondents.
Using a gadget during an online class, according to some respondents, has helped their
studies, research, and access to new information, and communication.
2. What are the challenges encountered of being ICT students in using gadgets
during online class?
The findings to this question are negative answer because according to the
question we gave them many of them are experiencing lack of equipment and you add
to this the slow Wi-Fi or data that can affect their learning. And due to slow Wi-Fi or lack
of gadget some of them are no longer focused on their studies because of poor signal
that can affect their grades.
3. How do ICT students face those challenges despite having online classes?
The data showed that the mean of most respondents are about motivating
themselves, while some respondents face the challenges by thinking of alternative ways
such a Recorded Class Meeting that can be found on our LMS website or personally
ask a Teacher for help.
Follow up question:
1. What are gadgets do you usually use for online classes?
According to the findings we got from our survey most of our respondents use
laptops. Higher percentage or number of laptop users according to our given survey.
2. How many gadgets do you use for online class?
According to the mean of respondents, 4 out of 8 ICT students answered 1, 3 out
of 8 ICT students answered 2, and 1 out of 8 ICT students answered 3, indicating that
the number of gadgets they use is 1. The gadgets used were not all the same for each
respondent.
3. How difficult it’s is for you to use limited gadgets while taking online classes?
Based on our survey most of our respondents have difficulty due to lack of
gadgets and most of them do not experience any difficulty in learning due to the fact
that they are complete with their equipment.
Conclusion
Gadgets play a vital role when it comes to online class as this helps students to
keep improving their skills and knowledge in online class. However, due to the reports
of students experiencing issues in using gadgets, students are developing ways on how
to face these challenges despite having online classes. Since new technology has been
introduced to us, most students complain about having a lack of gadgets to the point
that they couldn’t do anything else and the lack of gadgets is one of the compounding
factors in the issues of online class. The AU administration is starting to provide free
prepaid internet to the students that lived far away from the AU so that students could
receive their modules without going to the school. However, as a result, the education
system has received a significant amount of transformations in the past few years.
Despite new efforts to find ways to face it in online class, some extensive research is
required in order to develop a new solution that may help improve the usage of gadgets
in the future.
So what is the importance of using gadgets, what are the challenges
encountered in using gadgets, and how do they face those challenges during online
class? First, the importance of using gadgets is that it is very important because it is the
tool you need to finish your activities and tasks in online class and allows us to improve
our skills, knowledge, and abilities especially in ICT strand. Second, the most commonly
encountered issues in online class are the internet connection and of course, the lack of
gadgets. These common issues affect most of the ICT students of AU which also affect
the way they learn in online class. And last but not the least, the way students face it in
online class is by becoming patient and looking for solutions which may help them keep
in pace in online class. This helped students to keep in touch in online classes no
matter how difficult the situation is.
Recommendation
The study is about the challenges encountered in using gadgets during online
class of grade 11 ICT in Arellano University– Andres Bonifacio Campus. Based on the
conclusion, the researchers would like to recommend this research paper to the
following.
1.) This study can help the ICT students who can't attend online classes because of an
inability to connect to the internet and lack of gadgets. This study may train themselves
in doing their own activities. By this, they will be able to catch up with the lesson and
have this study to train themselves.
2.) The researchers recommend this teacher to help them catch up on the lesson and
opportunities to train themselves. Teachers should know to screen recordings of their
lesson while teaching and send it to group chat to keep the ICT students updated with
