Activity #5

The document discusses two opposing viewpoints and provides arguments for one side in each debate. For the first debate on whether social norms or individual rights should take priority, the document argues individual rights are most valuable. It claims individuals have fundamental rights and freedoms regardless of attributes and these rights protect choices about one's own life. For the second debate on responsibility towards the environment, the document argues an individual has a moral responsibility and discusses how responsibility relates to free will and weighing options to choose good over evil.

ACTIVITY #5

Choose a side from the following pairs of counter positions. Defend your chosen side by
giving the most rationally sound arguments for support.

1. "Social norms should be given highest priority" vs. "An individual's personal rights
are more valuable than the demands of one's community."

An individual's personal rights are most valuable than the demands of one's
community

I firmly believe that individual personal rights are the fundamental freedoms and
protections that belong to us, regardless of race, gender, sexuality, religion, or
beliefs. These are rights about treating others fairly and ensuring everyone can
make choices about their own lives. I believe all humans are born free and equal in
dignity and rights. They're granted with reason and conscience and should act out
towards one another in a spirit of kinship, which means that no matter who you are,
you're a human being grants you these rights. Your life is yours and cannot be
unjustly taken from you just because some people don't like you, regardless of your
nationality, culture, background, religion, or political views.

Moreover, you have the right to start a family and own property, and nobody can
say that you can't if you become sick. You have the right to health care. You also
have the right to education and other necessary social services, such as disability
care. For example, no person or entity can ever take these rights away from you. If
your government infringes on any of these rights, you have the right to seek asylum.
You also have the right to fair working conditions. Fair and equal pay and the right to
join and form trade unions to protect the interests you also have the right to rest and
leisure, including holidays. Don't let anyone deprive you of having these rights.
Stand up and fight for your rights. To wrap it up. The main idea of these rights is to
protect us, help us build our lives, and create a better world for everyone.
2. "An individual has a moral responsibility towards her natural environment." vs. "An
individual has the right to make use of her natural environment in any way that she
sees fit."

An individual has a moral responsibility towards her natural environment

I equate responsibility with freedom because our responsibility as human beings
and rational beings with the capacity to know the good and choose the good is to do
good, so that's what our responsibility is all about. Doing evil is a failure of
responsibility. It's a failure of the will and reason to choose what is right, what is
supposed to be selected from, which makes rational beings or animals different from
other organisms because they can discern what is right and choose the right despite
the odds. Also, It is an important concept related to how people use their free will
and how they take responsibility for their actions. Personal decisions should be
taken at an individual's own risk, and the person should accept such good or bad
consequences. Accountability for one's deeds and their results, for which a moral
actor may justly receive punishment or praise. Most people agree that the agent
must have had the option to act differently. Moral responsibility is a normative idea
that requires evaluation. A person needs to weigh in on the options first before
performing something. Always think about how it will benefit you and the people
around you.
