IV. READING
Read the passage carefully and choose the correct answer.
Traditions, saying, beliefs, language, and values are just a few things that make up our culture. Culture is the framework
in which families are structured. It shapes our expectations and ideals. Culture plays a part in the meaning of marriage
and our roles as husbands, wives, children and parents.
Understanding cultural differences and similarities related to marriage is important. Culture affects the roles that spouses
take within marriages, the age at marriage and number of children a couple have, the meaning of divorce, cohabitation
and non-marital childbearing, and the way parents raise children. Understanding how relationships and marriages vary
across cultural contexts, and how they are similar, we will be able to identify the unique ways that marriages and family
life affect people of various cultures. As a result, we will be able to help families and sustain happy marriages.
A cross cultural marriage or similar love relationship can be extremely exciting. The cultural background, visits to the
other country, the language of the country and learning to speak it, the different habits and ways of doing and saying
things that people from other cultures have, are. all very exciting indeed. What of the disadvantages of a cross cultural
marriage or love relationship with someone from another country or cultural background? No matter how much you
love your husband or wife, no matter how high your level of cross cultural awareness, cross cultural communication
and respect for differences. Misunderstanding seems to be unavoidable.

IV. READING
Read the following passage and choose the best answer.
Becoming independent
Many young people strive to be independent. That means you are able to take care of yourself, and you don't
have to rely on anyone else. However, to live independently, you need a number of life skills in order not to depend on
your parents and older brothers or sisters. One of the most important skills is time management which can help you
build your confidence and self-esteem. With good time management skills, you can perform your daily tasks, including
your responsibilities at school and at home with pleasing results. Moreover, you will not feel stressed when exam dates
are approaching. These skills can also help you act more independently and responsibly, get better grades at school
and have more time for your family and friends.
Developing time-management skills is not as challenging as you may think. Firstly, make a plan for things you
need to do, including appointments and deadlines. Using a diary or apps on mobile devices will remind you of what you
need to accomplish and when you need to accomplish it. Secondly, prioritize your activities. You need to decide which
tasks are the most urgent and important and then, concentrate on these first. This way, you may not be at a loss to
deal with too much work at the same time. Thirdly, develop routines because routines, when established, take less time
for you to do your tasks.
Time management skills are not hard to develop; once you master them, you will find out that they are great keys to
success and you can become independent.

Read the passage and do the tasks below.
A new hearing device is now available for some hearing-impaired people. This device uses a magnet to hold a detachable
sound-processing portion in place. Like other aids, it converts sound into vibrations. But it is unique in that it can
transmit the vibrations directly to the magnet and then to the inner ear. This produces a clearer sound. The new device
will not help all hearing-impaired people only those with a hearing loss caused by infection or some other problems in
the middle ear. It will probably help no more than 20 percent of all people with hearing problems. Those people who
have persistent ear infections, however, should find relief and restored hearing with the new device.

Is There Really a Generation Gap?
According to the results of a survey in USA WEEKEND Magazine, there isn’t really a generation gap. The magazine’s
“Teens & Parents” survey shows that today’s generation of young people generally get along well with their parents
and appreciate the way they’re being raised. Most feel that their parents understand them, and they believe their
parents consider family as the No. 1 priority in their lives. Although more than a third of teens have something in their
rooms they would like to keep secret from their parents, it is usually nothing more harmful than a diary or a CD.
Such results may seem surprising in the context of the violent events that people hear about in the media. Maybe
because of the things they hear, parents worry that their own kids might get out of control once they reach the teenage
years. However, the facts in the survey should make us feel better. The survey shows us that today’s teens are loving
and sensible. They are certainly happier than the angry people in the teenage stereotypes we all know about. True,
some teenagers are very angry, and we need to recognize their needs, but the great majority of teens are not like that
at all.
In contrast to some stereotypes, most teens believe they must be understanding about differences among individuals.
Many of them volunteer for community service with disadvantaged people. When they talk about themselves, their
friends and their families, they sound positive and proud. Generally, these are very nice kids.
Is this spirit of harmony a change from the past? Only a generation ago, parent-child relations were described as the
“generation gap”. Yet even then, things were not so bad. Most kids in the 1960s and 1970s shared their parents’ basic
values.
Perhaps, however, it is true that American families are growing closer at the beginning of this new millennium. Perhaps
there is less to fight about, and the dangers of drug abuse and other unacceptable behavior are now well known.
Perhaps, compared to the impersonal world outside the home, a young person’s family is like a friendly shelter, not a
prison. And perhaps parents are acting more like parents than they did 20 or 30 years ago.
Question 36. According the first paragraph, what did the survey find out about teenagers?
A. They get along well with their parents. B. They appreciate good CDs.
C. They keep secrets from their parents. D. They stay in their rooms.
Question 37. According to paragraph two, parents hear things that make them worry about their own kids. What kind
of things do they hear?
A. stories on the radio B. the violent events in the media
C. funny films on TV D. their teachers’ comments at school
Question 38. What is the stereotype referred to in paragraph 2?
A. Teens are people who recognize their needs. B. Teens are loving and sensible.
C. Teens are much happier than we think. D. Teens are angry people.
Question 39. What is the main subject of paragraph three?
A. Differences between teens. B. Stereotypes about teens.
C. The positive attitude of teens to others. D. Volunteering for disadvantaged people.
Question 40. In what way, according to the writer, are parents today different from they were a generation ago?
A. there is more to fight about B. the dangers of drug abuse are still unknown
C. other unacceptable behaviors are now well known D. a young person’s family is like a prison

them. The most common example of generation gap is seen in the family between parents and their children. It is not
only because of the gap in age but also because of the way parents (28) to a particular situation.
Advancement technology has led to the generation gap in this modern world. Children tend to spend most of their time

III. READING
Read the passage, and choose the correct answer A, B, C or D for each question.
Approximately one in two thousand people in Viet Nam has a significant hearing loss. Students who have been deafened
in early childhood can be very different to students who have lost hearing later in life in terms of educational
disadvantage. For example, their range of vocabulary may be limited, which in turn may affect their level of English
literacy.
Deaf and hard of hearing students can sometimes prefer visual learning strategies. This can be a challenge in an
environment where much essential information is delivered exclusively by word of mouth.
Students with a hearing loss may need to use assistive technology to participate in class. This assistive technology can
be the laptop where software such as Skype can be used to deliver interpreters or captioning. For some it will be in the
form of listening devices. For others, it will be a combination of technology that includes both listening devices and
computer based software.
The impact of hearing loss can cause delays in receiving learning material. Students who need information transcribed
from tape must sometimes wait for a significant period of time for this to happen. This needs to be considered in terms
of developing suitable timelines for the completion of work for each student.
Students with hearing loss may appear isolated in the learning environment. The possibility for social contact and
interaction with other students is often limited, and this isolation or separateness may have an impact on learning.
Participation and interaction in tutorials may be limited. Students who cannot hear the flow and nuances of rapid verbal
exchange will be at a disadvantage.

In many aspects of life, effective communication skills are extremely important. With good communication skills, people
can enjoy better interpersonal relationships with friends and family. The following are some guides that can help you
improve your communication skills.
Learn to listen
Listening is not the same as hearing; you should learn to listen not only to the words being spoken but also how they
are being spoken and the non-verbal messages sent with them. You shouldn't think about what to say next while
listening; instead clear your mind and focus on the message being received. Your friends, colleagues and other
acquaintances will appreciate your good listening skills.
Try to understand other people's emotions
To understand other people's emotions, you should be sympathetic to other people's misfortunes and congratulate
them on their achievements. To do this, you need to be aware of what is going on in other people's lives. It's crucial to
maintain eye contact and do not be afraid to ask others for their opinions as this will help to make them feel valued.
Encourage
It's advised that you offer words and actions of encouragement, as well as praise, to others, which make other people
feel welcome, valued and appreciated in your communications. If you let others know that they are valued, they are
much more likely to give you their best. You should also try to ensure that everyone get involved in an interaction or
conversation by using effective body language and open questions.
