Introduction
Being a Teacher is a challenging profession. You will help the learners
achieve their goals in life. To be a teacher, one should possess creativity,
knowledge, patience, and integrity. Furthermore, it is one of the emphasized
standards for teacher education graduates to be eligible as professional
teachers as stated in RA 7836, also known as the “Philippine Teachers
Professionalization Act of 1994”, which is passing the Licensure Examination
for Teachers (LET). Aspiring teachers who finished Bachelor of Secondary
Education (BSEd) are tested along three components in the LET: General
Education, Professional Education, and Field of Specialization with
corresponding weights of 20%, 40%, and 40%, respectively. For the graduates
of Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd), they are tested along two
components which are General Education and Professional Education, with
corresponding weights of 40% and 60%, respectively. The passing rate for the
LET is 75%.
The LET Exam or the Licensure Exam for Teachers is one of the most
crucial assessments aspiring teachers should pass. Examinees take much time
and effort to prepare and review to ace and pass the exam. This exam is open
for a bachelor's degree in education or its equivalent with a major and minor
and the degrees which shall be considered equivalent must have taken at least
18 units in Professional Education or a bachelor's degree in arts and sciences
with at least ten units in professional education. In the Philippines, the LET
Exam is given twice a year, and those who passed will acquire a teaching
license and be eligible to practice their profession.
In the US, the LET Exam is called as Teacher Certification Test. Most
public schools in the United States use these exams to assess an aspirant
teacher's knowledge and abilities to make sure they are qualified to teach.
According to NCTQ or the National Council on Teacher Quality, the average
best-attempt pass rate is 88%, with institutions ranging from 46% to 100% in
New York alone. There are many opportunities for test success for teacher
candidates. Examine institutions' best attempt pass rates to determine where
most test takers, regardless of the number of attempts, are passing. Over the
past two years, NCTQ has partnered with state education departments and the
testing institutions they utilize to collect much more thorough licensure test
data that considers indicators like first-attempt pass rates, the number of
attempts, best-attempt pass rates, all-taker pass rates, etc.
In some countries in Asia, teachers are licensed as professionals or
certified to teach through their appropriate agencies like Professional
Regulation Commission (PRC) in the Philippines. In Singapore, the National
Institute for Education is accredited to train teachers and offers a master's
degree and a bachelor's degree program in teaching. Through this, Singapore
limits its recruitment only to those students qualified for the country’s rigorous
research universities. Successful candidates who have scored in the middle or
above on Singapore’s challenging A-level exams have a higher chance of getting
accepted.
In the Philippines, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) is the
agency that holds the Licensure Exam for Teachers. The exam is conducted
twice a year mostly around March and September. In January 2022 LET Exam
the top-performing schools for LET – Elementary are Mindanao State University
– Marawi with a rating of 90.53%, Bulacan State University – Sarmiento
Campus with a rating of 81.94%, and lastly Bulacan State University – Malolos
with a rating of 80.70%. For LET – Secondary: Cebu Normal University –
88.73%, University of Mindanao – Tagum, Batangas State University –
Batangas City – 85.71%, Southern Luzon State University – Lucban (SLPC) –
85.45%, Polytechnic University of The Philippines – Main-Sta.Mesa – 83.33%,
ICCT Colleges Found. Inc (Inst. of Creative Comp Tech Inc) – 81.82%.
The purpose of this study is to provide an analysis of the LET
performance of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation. A five-year
data will be analyzed to find out if there are improvements in the results, the
number of examinees, the passing rate, and the results for Elementary and
Secondary.
