Description of 4 bones of the upper limb
The upper limb is made up of three sections that consist of the arm that lies between the
shoulder and the elbow joints. In addition there is the forearm that lies between the elbow and the
wrist while the hand lies distal to the wrist. Each upper limb is made up of thirty bones. The
main bones in the upper limb are humerus that is found in the arm (Patel & Varacallo, 2021).
The ulna and the radius are connected bones that form the forearm. There are eight carpal bones
that form the base of the hand while there are five metacarpal bones that form the palm of the
hand.
Humerus is the only bone that lies in the arm region whereby its end forms its head. The
bone is huge, round, smooth and faces medially. The head of the bone links with glenoid cavity
found in the scapula to form the shoulder joint. The margin of the bones smooth head is referred
to as its anatomical neck. The bone has greater and lesser tabernacles that give attachment parts
for muscles found in the shoulder. The ulna bone is the medial bone of the forearm that runs
parallel to the radius known as the lateral bone of the forearm. The end of the ulna bone is
similar to a crescent wretch and has a tronchear notch that connects with tronchlea of the
humerus to form the elbow joint. Radius bone lies parallel to the ulna whereby its head is disk-
shaped forming the proximal end (Patel & Varacallo, 2021).The bone has a small depression on
its head that articulates with the capitulum in the humerus to form the elbow joint while the
smooth and outer margin of radius bone head connects with radial notch in the ulna at the
radioulnar joint. The bone has radial tuberosity that is ovals shaped and gives allowance for
muscle attachment. Carpal bones that forms the series of eight bones that form the hand that are
arranged in two rows to form proximal rows composed of four bones as well as a diastal row
comprised of four carpaw bones. Bones found in the proximal row that lie from the lateral to the
3
medial region are scaphoid, pisiform, lunate and triquetrum.Pisiform are projected anteriorly to
form the bony bump felt at hand base.
