Top Three Toys

Austin Cooper

No. 1.
Trivial Pursuit was created in 1975, when Scott Abott and Chris Haney were playing scrabble.
While they were playing they were talking about creating their own game. Scott decided that the
game should be based on questions. They first called their game Trivia Pursuit, but then they
chose to change it to Trivial Pursuit. The two brothers created a company and gathered $40,000
dollars. According to Toys the book by Don Wullfson “The first 1,100 cost $75 each to
manufacture. They sold these to retailers for $15 a game.” This put them deeply in debt, losing
60 dollars every sale. Later they hired a public consultant and displayed there game at the 1983
New York toy fair. Finally it hit. Both men became millionaires, and the game is still popular
today.

No. 2.
The slinky was a accident. Not even meant to be created by a worker in a Shipyard who was
working on creating stabilizars for ships at rough sea. In 1945 an engineer named Richard
James was working on that stabiling device when a spring fell from his shelf, slowly flopping all
the way down to his desk. The worker thought it was an accident and treied it over, and over.
Finally, rushing home to show his wife. His wife, Betty James was racing to name the toy.
Finally she chose Slinky. According to Toys, “Betty and Richard were able to start there own
company, selling the slinkies in stores. To date, about 352 million Slinkies have been sold.”

No. 3.
During the Great Deppresion of 1929 that put people out of work, and devastated the global
economy, there was a man name Ole Kirk Christiansen who lived in a small town in Billund
Denmark. To make enough to get by, Kirk began making hand crafted toys. When the
Deppresion was ending, people were returning back to their old jobs. Kurk became very skilled
at making wooden toys, and learned that he could make more money building toys than building
houses, like his prior job. He decided to create his own company Leg Godt which means play
well in Danish, and started making toys. Later, he was making wooden building blocks, but they
wouldn’t stay together. So he created little bumps on them so they would connect with another
piece. He then began making the pieces have more holes so they can go together in different
ways. Later, the name of the company was switched to Lego. According to Toys, “In the original
1949 version, the bricks could only be stacked directly on top of each other. Now, two eight
studded bricks can be combines in over 24 different ways.” Lego grew and grew, and became
one of the most popular toys in Europe, spreading to the US later. Now, Lego is still one of the
most popular toys in the world.
