house. He takes good care of the old man and reads books for him everyday in the
morning. Although he states that he loves the old man, and hates only the eye, he
insists that his careful thought put into committing his murder proves that he
cannot possibly be insane.
*cảnh đọc sách*
The main character: So by that form divine was given to me sweet medicine to
clear and strengthen sight and as one handling skillfully the harp attendant on some
skillful songster’s voice bid the chords vibrate and there in the song acquires more
pleasure so that whilst it spake, I doth remember me that I beheld a pair of blessed
luminaries moves, like the accordant twinkling of two eyes…
*đứng dậy cất sách, bật nhạc* (chèn tiếng nhạc radio cổ)
*đắp mền cho ông lão*
The old man: I can see the tiredness on your face. How come? Is everything
alright? If you need any help, don’t be afraid to tell me anytime. I’ll be there for
you.
The main character: Well, I'm doing just fine. Don’t you fret too much. Recently,
I’ve been having insomnia. That makes me lack energy when I wake up in the
morning.
The old man: Oh no… Do you consider seeing the doctor?
The main character: No no, actually I think I can handle it.
The old man: Please take care of your health. The weather is getting colder and
colder outside. Stay warm! If anything ever happens to you, I really don’t know
who is going to take care of me.
The main character: Yeah. I’ll keep that in mind, Master.
SCENE 2: Seven nights in a row, at midnight, the main character opens the old
man’s room door to watch him while he is sleeping. He slowly and carefully shines
the lantern light onto the old man’s vulture-eye but it is always closed making it
impossible for the main character to commit his crime. The old man realizes that
there is always somebody standing next to the door and following him when he is
asleep. Therefore, he lives in fear and takes it as a precaution every single night.
* Main lén lút nhìn ông lão một hồi rồi gõ cửa. Ông lão đang ngồi đọc sách với vẻ
mặt lo sợ, phòng thủ*
The main character: * gõ cửa*
The old man: Who’s there?
The main character : It’s me.
The old man: Come over here. Could you read this book for me?
The main character: Of course yes, Master!
*Main ngồi đọc sách cho ông lão*(chèn nhạc radio cổ)
“The example of our house corrupt her not, and she is all remaineth of me there.”
*dắt ông lão về phòng, main đứng ngoài cửa rình tiếp*
SCENE 3: Next morning, at dawn, the main character brings a glass of warm
water for the old man. He asks his master if he sleeps well.
The main character: Good morning, Master. Here is your warm water. Have you
slept well?
The old man: *không trả lời lại, nét mặt còn mệt*
When the main character and the old man were having dinner, the neighbor came
over.
The main character: So… tonight we have croissants and crab soup for dinner.
The old man: Oooh! Looks delicious! Thank you for the meal. *cười một cách
thiện cảm*
The main character: It’s my duty to take care of the whole thing in this house,
Master! You don’t need to thank me. *cười cho có*
* ông lão làm rơi cái thìa, main nhặt hộ*
*cái muỗng phản chiếu con mắt của ông lão, lúc này main biểu hiện hơi kì kì, cố
tránh né ánh mắt đó*
*người hàng xóm gõ cửa*
Neighbor: Is there anyone home?
*main ra mở cửa*
Neighbor: Hi. I’m Leila. It’s been a while since I came over to your house. I’ve
been busy with work.
The main character: Oh, it’s nice to see you again. Please come in, we’re having
dinner. Let’s join us!
Neighbor: I have some gifts for you. How are you doing these days, Sir?
The old man: Thank you. Not really good actually. I’ve been struggling with my
sleep at night. Somehow I always feel insecure in my own room.
The neighbor: Really? Or is it just hallucinations?
The old man: mhm.... I don’t know. Maybe….
The neighbor: Well, I will bring you some good tea that I already tried. It may
help for your health and especially your sleep in the long run.
The old man: That’s very kind of you. I appreciate that.
*main ngồi nhìn, liếc liếc, đảo mắt tỏ vẻ không hài lòng lắm*
SCENE 4: On the eighth night, the main character decides to kill the old man
because he can’t bear seeing the old man’s eye anymore. That “vulture-eye”
drives the main character mad, and he considers it as something to be cursed
with.
The old man: Who’s there?
The main character: It’s me!!! Are you surprised, my venerable master?
The old man: Why… Why are you standing up here at… this time? *giọng bối
rối, sợ sệt*
The main character: *cười nhếch mép* you know what?... ahh right… *cười*
How you could know then cuz I haven’t said it out yet. Well well, I’ve been
waiting for this moment for a while. The moment that I could make your evil eye
vanish forever and ever.
The old man: What do you mean by that? Why does my eye bother you then?
The main character: Don’t you really see or do you just ignore it? *giọng gằn
mạnh*
The old man: *ngập ngừng* I don’t…
The main character: *nói một cách bình tĩnh* Seven nights in a row, I opened the
door just to see your vulture-eye. I hate seeing your disgusting eye, my honorable
master. Everytime I look into that eye, the whole world seems to turn into
darkness. I can’t take it anymore. *scream out loud* I want to kill you to be free of
it.
The old man: Why… Why so ? I did nothing wrong to you. I’ve considered you
as my family member and always will be. How could you think of doing such a
thing to me? I don’t get it…
The main character: Right right. You did nothing wrong to me but your cloudy
eye did. You could have never imagined how much your eye changed my life. It
was ALL because of your cruel eye. It turned my mind upside down. *vẻ mặt thất
vọng, có chút sợ*
The old man: Please… don’t… Please.. I beg you… *chèn tiếng tim đập mạnh dữ
dội*
The main character: *mất bình tĩnh vì tiếng tim đập quá mạnh* Shut your mouth
up! Don’t blame yourself! Blame your pale eye instead! It was wiped open when I
shined my lantern light onto your eyes. HAHAHA * giọng cười đáng sợ*
*thay đổi vẻ mặt, giận dữ, hét to lên*. Your dead hour has come, Master!
* giết ông lão*
The old man: NO…..NOOOOOOO (chèn tiếng vang như trong video trên ytb)
Narrator: There was no pulsation. The old man was stone-dead.
The main character: *tự nói với chính mình* Finally, the eye would trouble me
no more.
Narrator: The main character takes apart the body and nails the pieces under
the floorboards, making certain to hide all signs pointing to the crime.
SCENE 5: On that night, the old man’s scream causes a neighbor to alert the
police.
* người hàng xóm đang ngủ bỗng dưng giật mình dậy vì tiếng hét to*
* bật dậy khỏi giường*
The neighbor: *tự nói với chính mình* Oh My Lord! What’s going on out there?
I’m pretty sure that a creepy noise has just crossed my ears.
*vẻ mặt hốt hoảng*
The neighbor: I reckon I gotta make a 911 phone call immediately.
* đang gọi 911*
The neighbor: Hello. I want to report that I did hear a creepy sound coming from
my neighborhood. Could you send the police over right away please? The address
is 4137 Cook Road, Valdese town, North Carolina. Thank you.
*thẫn thờ*
* cảnh sát tới gõ cửa*
Policeman 1: Hi. My name is Brandon, a police officer of the Erie Police
Department. This is officer Leon and Johnny. Did you make a 911 call earlier?
The neighbor: Yes, it was me.
Policeman 1: Are you sure that you heard a creepy noise from the outside?
The neighbor: A hundred percent sure. I’m having a gut feeling that something
bad happened in the old man’s house. I’ve been living here for over 10 years but to
be honest I haven’t heard of a scary scream like this before.
Policeman 2: So you mean you are suspecting that there were robbers or
murderers broke into his house?
The neighbor: Yeah, I suppose so. Can you come over to his house and check on
him if he is still okay, please?
Policeman 3: Definitely. We’ll head to his house right now. Thank you so much
for reporting. *bắt tay*
SCENE 6: Three policemen are on their way to the old man’s house
* đang ngồi trong ô tô* ( chèn tiếng động cơ ô tô)
Policeman 1: Do you guys know any information about the old man who lives in
that house?
Policeman 2: Well, as far as I know he is a man of honor in this town. He treats
people with kindness. However, a lot of people say he has a very strange eye
color.
Policeman 3: What? Really? How strange is it?
Policeman 2: One of his eyes is cloudy and pale…
Policeman 3: *ngập ngừng* Ooh wow… Apparently he is also well-known for his
fantastic artwork collections.
Policeman 1: He seems like a proficient man though. Anyways, we’ll see how
things go when we get there.
Policeman 1: Good evening, Sir. Pardon our intrusion in this late hour but we’ve
been sent to ensure everything is well with you here at the house.
The main character: No intrusions at all, Sirs. Please, come out of the cold.
*ngưng một chút rồi tiếp tục nói*
The main character: You’ll catch your death in this weather. *giọng creepy một
chút*
Policeman 1: Very kind of you. Is your master in?
The main character: *giọng thản nhiên* I’m afraid he’s out in the country for the
holidays. How may I be of service this evening?
Policeman 1: We’ve been sent on account of the neighbor hearing a scream from
this residence.
The main character: *vẫn bình tĩnh* Oh dear! I’m afraid to admit it. You seem to
have been troubled by your own sleep on account of my own inconsiderable
dreams.
It was I who cried out in fear *giọng trầm xuống*
Policeman 1: Yes, it seems your neighbor cannot catch much sleep with this storm
either. Luckily, it's abated enough for her to come to visit.
The main character: Her???
Policeman 1: Yes, Miss Anastasia was forced to stay at the Mathen Residence
after being trapped in the storm. *vừa nói vừa đi loanh quanh nhà*
Policeman 2: Trapped? I’d almost forgotten about her. It’s been over two days
since we saw her, eh?
Policeman 3: Two days too long.
Policeman 2: I never would have thought Mr. Mathen is all, but I suppose that’s
how the heart works.
Policeman 1: As I was saying, with the unusual weather and the new century
approaching you must understand that these are strange days. After last February,
skating in Florida, do you believe? Some say the four horsemen ride next.
The main character: I only see the three of you. *rolling eyes*
Policeman 1: The Christensen’s have taken to boarding their home, fasting and
prayer until the new year. Lutherans, those. Never quite understood them, and all
this over a method of dating.
Policeman 2: We all hail Caesar and his bloody calendar.
Policeman 1: *nhìn nhân vật chính* Yes, well… don’t let yourself fall prey to
these petty fantasies and barricade yourself in your room. It would do your master
no good.
Policeman 1: *ngập ngừng 1 chút* Well, might we have a look at the place?
The main character: Of course! I haven’t had much luck in sleeping and was just
about to have some tea. May I offer each of you a cup?
Policemen: *gật đầu*
The main character: won’t be but a moment.
Policeman 2: I hope he brings some cookies with that.
Policeman 2: Find anything? *giọng nhây lên*
*cảnh sát 3 giật mình*
*cảnh sát 2 cười giọng nham nhở*
Policeman 1: *đứng nhìn một bức tranh* Very nice piece of work. (chèn tiếng con
lắc đồng hồ kêu)
Policeman 1: Your master has done quite well for himself. Strange that a man of
his fortune would not seek warmer climes over the holidays.
The main character: Again I’m most sorry for having caused you fellows trouble.
Being alone in this large estate does not allow for a peaceful slumber.
*hai cảnh sát còn lại bước xuống cầu thang*
Policeman 2: Well, it seems all is in order.
The main character: Oh please, you’ve only just arrived. Stay a moment more.
The main character: Oh, I see you like the academics. Have you been exposed to
the symbolist movement yet? My master has an excellent example of this artistry
in his chambers.
Policeman 1: Oh, I suppose a moment more wouldn’t hurt.
* main dẫn 3 cảnh sát vào phòng ông lão*
* cảnh sát 1 tới kệ sách cầm lên 1 quyển sách*
The main character: *tới cầm quyển sách và hỏi* If I may?
*mời cảnh sát ngồi*
The main character: *hướng vào cảnh sát 3* Sit! *giọng nhẹ nhàng thôi*
*đọc sách*
The main character: (nhìn sách đọc) “Midway upon the journey of our life I
found myself within a forest dark, for the straightforward pathway had been lost. I
cannot well repeat how there I entered. So full was I of slumber at the moment that
I had abandoned the true way.” * giọng hơi creepy*
(đóng sách lại, tự nhớ) *nhìn 3 cảnh sát* “I understood that onto such torment the
carnal malefactors were condemned, whose reasons subjugate to appetite. Last are
we and are only so far punished that without hope we live on in desire.” *(chỗ
khúc in desire, main hướng vào cảnh sát 1)*
Policeman 1: Is that my sin? *lên giọng*
* main bắt đầu nghe thấy tiếng tim đập* (chèn tiếng tim đập nhẹ)
The main character: *quay mặt lại, vừa đi vừa nói* Heavens, why won’t they be
gone?
(tiếng tim đập)
The main character: *đi tới chỗ ván sàn, quỳ xuống, áp tai xuống mặt sàn và
nói* “Add to a place I come, where nothing shines.”
Main: Is it possible they heard or not?
Main: Almighty God, no. No, they heard, they suspected, they knew. *nói
chậm* (ghi âm bỏ vô ppt)
And they were making a mockery of my horror. This I thought, and this I
think. (ghi âm)
*cảnh sát cười to nữa lên, vỗ tay nhiệt tình vô*
Main: But anything’s better than this agony. Anything is more tolerable than
this derision. I could bear those hypocritical smiles no longer. (ghi âm)
*đứng dậy, hét to*
The main character: Villains!Dissemble no more! Tear up the planks! Here-here!
It was the beating of his hideous heart!
Policeman 1: Hey, catch him! He is murderer!
Policeman 2 & 3: Put your hands on your head or I’ll fire!
THE END
