Abortion
What is “Abortion”? According to WHO (World Health Organization), abortion
is a common health intervention. It is safe when carried out using a method
recommended by WHO, appropriate to the pregnancy duration and by someone with
the necessary skills. Six out of 10 of all unintended pregnancies end in an induced
abortion. Around 45% of all abortions are unsafe, of which 97% take place in
developing countries. Unsafe abortion is a leading – but preventable – cause of maternal
deaths and morbidities. It can lead to physical and mental health complications and
social and financial burdens for women, communities and health systems. Lack of
access to safe, timely, affordable and respectful abortion care is a critical public health
and human rights issue.
I stand with my fellow women in fully supporting the legalization of abortion.
This is purely based on how I think morally and what I believe is right. I’m a Christian,
and I believe in God but religion should not be part of this argument. Just reading facts
from WHO page makes it hard for me to even consider changing my belief. As a young
adult, I know very well what my peers are doing and what we lack from it. Since I was
in junior high school, I’ve been writing essays educating about the lack of sex education
and how we should do better in terms of educating younger people but I know it won’t
create a much larger effect. With abortion, I wasn’t well aware of back then but now
that I’ve matured, I feel that legalizing it in the country is a big step towards modernity
and would greatly benefit everyone. Not having the freedom to decide on what to do
with our own body is the worst, if you think about it, we have more freedom on getting
unnecessary medical surgery than something actually necessary. The fact that most
people who oppose abortion are either disguising it as their belief in Catholicism or
people who are uneducated on how abortion is conducted and are close-minded and
only think in one direction. It is not possible to get an abortion in a certain set amount of
time and it can help the woman both mentally and financially who are not ready or
want to have a child right now. Rape happens everywhere and there’s always a high
chance that it is conducted by a family member, especially in the Philippines where it is
common for the neighbor’s being blood-related. It is common knowledge that incest is
never a good option and can cause a lot of genetic problems that can harm both the
mother and the future life of the child. People might argue to get an adoption but what
if it were a child? It is not uncommon for victims to be barely in their adolescence to
experience this and the chances of pregnant children pulling through the pregnancy are
low and very dangerous. If people were still going to argue about what’s right or
wrong, the power to create laws restricting such abuse of use is possible.
I don’t want to generalize people’s decision on getting an abortion but I believe it
is a big decision for them to make and is their right to get to decide on their own as this
does not only affect them but the future and people around them. It is a form of torture
forcing someone who does not want it to carry it for the rest of their lives.
