INTRODUCTION
What is Social Internship?
A social work internship is a professional program offered by organizations to
students who are almost finished completing an educational program or to
degree holders seeking experience. Typically, candidates are completing their
undergraduate or graduate degree. Social work internships for undergraduates
focus on relevant, entry-level experiences that mirror job duties, while
internships for graduate students prepares them for more advanced job roles.
Internships can be paid or unpaid and provide networking opportunities that
may lead to a permanent position. They provide students with the opportunity to
show case the skills they have learned in their graduate/under-graduate courses.
It also provides a platform for gaining work experience in various fields of work
such as marketing, statistics, sales strategies, etc. Social internships will expose
you to society and its problems and push you to build value structures for
those who are less fortunate. It will give you an opportunity to take a close and
personal look at social issues in which privilege, inequality, marginalization,
and powerlessness lead to structural disparities.

INTRODUCTION: NGO
A non-governmental organization (NGO) is a non-profit group that functions
independently of any government. NGO stands for non-governmental
organization. While there is no universally agreed-upon definition of an NGO,
typically it is a voluntary group or institution with a social mission, which
operates independently from the government.
NGOs or similar organizations exist in all parts of the world. What is considered
an NGO in one country may not qualify as an NGO in another, as legal
definitions, permitted activities, monitoring, and oversight differ from country
to country. The term can encompass many types of organizations.
Although these terms are not necessarily interchangeable, an organization
similar to an NGO may be called non-profit, charity, non-profit organization
(NPO), civil society organization (CSO), citizen sector organization (CSO),
social benefit organization (SBO), an advocacy organization, voluntary
organization, grassroots support organization (GSO), and non-state actor
(NSA). You may also hear the terms independent sector, volunteer sector, and
civil society during discussions about NGOs.
NGOs, sometimes called civil societies, are organized on community, national
and international levels to serve a social or political goal such as humanitarian
causes or the environment. NGOs, or non-governmental organizations, play a
major role in international development, aid and philanthropy. While "NGO"
has various interpretations, the term is generally accepted to include non-profit,
private organizations that operate outside of government control.
Some NGOs rely primarily on volunteers, while others support a paid staff. The
World Bank identifies two broad groups of NGOs:

Note: The Report done is classified under Advocacy NGO’s.
Operational NGOs, which focus on the design and implementation of
development projects.
Advocacy NGOs, which defend or promote a specific cause
and seek to influence public policy.

About: KAUSHALYA VIKAS KENDRA
Kaushalya Vikas Kendra (KViK) is a centre for skill development. Its prime
objective is to make semi-literate youth from poor economic and social
background ‘employable’ and to provide skilled manpower to the industries of
high growth. KViK is a company set up to provide vocational training in variety
of trades which are in great demand in the industry today. KViK has been set up
by experienced and successful executives of companies who would like to give
something back to the society. KVIK’s vision is to reach out to poor youth in
the villages and provide them skills for a sustainable livelihood at affordable
costs. They want to alleviate poverty by providing training on soft skills for
people who cannot afford mainstream education. KViK also teaches English for
free for reading, writing, and communication.

Vision
Meet the needs of the growing Indian economy for skilled personnel:
India’s economy is growing at a fast pace. This growth is improving the income
level of the people and ushering in prosperity. However, the growth is hampered
due to shortage of skilled manpower in all growing industries. The efficiency
and quality of work is suffering for want of skilled personnel in various trades.
These skills can be imparted by vocational training to boys and girls with school
education. The training needs to be job oriented with high element of on-the-job
experience and soft skills. KViK’s vision is to impart such training and bridge
the gap between demand and supply for skilled Human Resource in the
emerging industries.
Social Objective
Upliftment of people from economically and socially weaker sections of the
society by making them ‘employable’.
KViK has been incorporated as a Private Limited Company under section 25 of
the Companies Act. Therefore, it is a “not-for-profit” organisation with the sole
aim of upliftment of people from economically and socially weaker sections of
the society by making them ‘employable’. The courses selected by KViK can be
learnt by a student with the basic school education. However, desire to learn,
work hard and aptitude to follow discipline and self-development are necessary
for a trainee to get placement and do well in a job. KViK’s curriculum provides
for developing soft skills, including ‘spoken English’, which is so essential in
today’s cosmopolitan nature of life in cities.
Mission
Page | 12
Dept. of BBA Aug-Dec 2021
KViK’s mission is to provide vocational training in trades which are in demand.
It aims to extend its reach to towns and villages where large number of young
people desirous of making a decent living needs to be skilled to secure
employment in the industry and commerce. KViK provides short term (3 to 6
months) training for boys and girls as per government curriculum and fee
structure in following skills:
Electrical repair, maintenance & repair of computers, electronic equipment
repair and office assistant with TALLY, Plumbing and Carpentry and Tailoring.
It has plans to introduce more skills based on the needs of the industry and
availability of students. In addition, KViK runs special courses for the following
stakeholders:
Eureka Forbes for technicians to install and maintain Water Purifiers.
KViK’s mission is to make employable young boys and girls in rural areas by
training them skills which are needed in villages and towns, such as repair of
computers/smart phones, repair of irrigation pump sets, installation of solar
systems, wood working for buildings, furniture making, garment making, and so
on. Its focus will be on skills which can used to become a ‘self-entrepreneur’. A
dormitory is being set up near the KViK training centre in Weavers Colony in
South Bengaluru to house students from far away villages. The training for
these students will be ‘full time’ and will be completed in 2 months.
Training Methodology
Cost-effective and High-Quality Training
Page | 13
Dept. of BBA Aug-Dec 2021
High quality training at reasonable cost is the corner stone on which KViK
has built its credibility and reputation.
The KViK logo indicates the focus on ‘hand skills’ and what a highly skilled
person can produce. A highly skilled person also is like a diamond and valued.
The curriculum of KViK is based on German “Dual training” model which
emphasizes class room teaching and on-the-job training in equal measure.
Emphasis is on technical skills as well as soft skills like work culture, adherence
to standards, safety and discipline. The courses offered by KViK are affordable
to students from economically weaker sections. The cost of the high-quality
training is met mainly by fees, placement fee and donations. The revenue model
is designed to sustain and expand the training facilities in a steady manner.
The DGET (Director General for Employment and Training) has recognised
KViK as a Vocational Training Provider (VTP) after a rigorous process of
scrutiny and validation of its infrastructure, faculty and other resources. Under
the Skill Development Incentive scheme, test of students and issuing of
certificates after completion of curriculum and training is done by assessing
bodies appointed by DGETs. Tailoring course is based on agreement with
USHA International with special curriculum, duration and fee structure.
Kaushalya Vikas Kendra, as the name suggests believes that every person has
the basic talent. It provides opportunity for the talent to develop in to an
employable skill.
The KViK courses run on part-time basis to allow poor students to earn some
money by odd jobs. The class duration is 2 to 3 hours per day. Training in some
skills is done in multiple batches during the day in order to utilise resources
optimally. The duration of the courses varies from 3 to 6 months.

CONCLUSION
Page | 27
Dept. of BBA Aug-Dec 2021
CONCLUSION:
I have gained a lot of experience working and interacting with the teaching and
admin staff of Kaushalya Vikas Kendra. There were a lot of learning aspects
which I have gained during my time in KViK. I gained a lot of knowledge about
the working of a marketing division and also gained a lot of knowledge about
the operations and organisation structure. This will help me in the future when I
hope to open up my own NGO and/or Business. I also learned how to use social
media as a marketing tool to gain more sales. This helped the NGO gain more
donations and students to join their cause. I also designed a brochure which can
be handed out during different kinds of events such as fundraisers and
awareness campaigns. This gave potential donors and potential students to gain
more knowledge about the operations and teachings of the NGO. Link to the
PDF of the brochure will be given below in the reference section. During my
first week at the NGO, I created a PPt presentation showcasing the advantages
and disadvantages the NGO might be facing due to certain reasons using the
SWOT/SWOC Analysis. This helped give a clear picture on how the NGO can
analyse and create a marketing strategy which can attract more donors and
students to join their cause. KViK incurs sizable infrastructure and operational
expenses to maintain its high quality, employment-oriented training facility. It
has engaged expert trainers and staff and rented buildings for the training centre
and the dormitory at the market rates. All these are funded by private donations.
The result is that every year hundreds of poor young boys, girls and housewives
trained by KViK find a sustainable livelihood and live a life of dignity.
