1. ACE OF CUPS

Pictorial Symbolism : A hand appears from the clouds holding a beautiful


cup from which five streams of water flow into the lily pond. A dove
descends holding a communication wafer in its beak the lilies stand for
emotional growth.

Interpretation : The five streams of water symbolises the five senses. The
dove in the card shows spiritual values. The Ace of Cups is a symbol of
possibility in the area of deep feelings, intimacy, compassion and love. It
shows that a seed of emotional awareness has been planted in life
although one may not yet have recognized it. When the seed sprouts, it
could take almost any form. It might be an attraction, strong feeling,
intuitive knowing or sympathetic reaction. On the outside, it could be an
offer, gift, opportunity, encounter or synchronistic event.

Divinatory Meaning : Ace of Cups suggests inner attunement and

spirituality. Cups are the suit of the heart and the Ace stands for the direct
knowing that comes from the heart. One should trust what one’s feelings
are. One should seek out ways to explore consciousness and one’s
connections with the Spirit. One should allow the power of emotions to
guide in a new direction. One should embrace the love that is the Ace of
Cups.

In a Reading : In a reading, Ace of Cups shows that there could be fears


relating to love or motherhood. One should not accept things relating to
the heart or being selfish in emotional matters. It shows that positive and
new beginnings are heralded. One will feel the onrush of pure love, a
profound understanding of oneself or a fresh outlook on life. It may be
Lady luck also. One should embrace all the goodness at this time that life
has to offer in its bounty. Fertility and the birth of new life, ventures and
ideas are also signified through this card. It also shows abundance in all
things, especially in love.

Reversed Meaning : If the Ace of Cards comes in reverse then it shows


instability. It may mean a false heart or disappointments in relationships.
It also signifies a change in relationships, most likely due to these things.

An Ace-Ace pair shows that a new spirit is entering one’s life.

The Ace of Cups represents deep feelings, intimacy, attunement,


compassion and love.

Ace of Cups with Ace of Wands : Creativity, excitement, adventure, courage


and personal power.

Ace of Cups with Ace of Swords : Intelligence, reason, justice, truth, clarity
and perseverance.

Ace of Cups with Ace of Pentacles : Prosperity, abundance, trust, security,


and groundedness.

2. TWO OF CUPS

Pictorial Symbolism : In the Tarot Card of Two of Cups a man and woman
are exchanging cups. There is a staff between the two and two serpents en-
circle around the staff. On the top of a staff a bird with a face of lion is seen.

Interpretation : In the card the cups that man and woman are exchanging
are symbols of love and emotions. Here the pure energy of love is divided
between two people. The two serpents represents good and evil and act as a
symbol of positive and negative side of love. The bird with lion face repre-
sents that carnal desires has the wings of spirit. This indicate a balance be-
tween spiritual and physical love. The man and woman who are gazing at each
other and ready to share their cups (emotions) shows romance and sexual
attraction. The energy between these two is almost palpable. The Two of Cups
shows the beauty and power that is created

when two come together. This is the card that lovers would want to see.

Divinatory Meaning : The Two of Cups has a deeper meaning as well. When-
ever two forces are drawn together, there is the potential for bonding. This
card can stand for the union of any two entities like people, groups, ideas
or talents. Two of Cups tells to look for connections in life, especially those
that are one-on-one. It shows that present is not the right time to separate or
stay apart. It is the time to join with others and work in a partnership. One
should look for truce and the chance to forgive and be forgiven. If one is
presented with two choices or tendencies within self then one should seek to
reconcile them.

In a Reading : Two of Cups indicate a beginning of romance, a good rela-


tionship or friendship. It also indicates engagement, commitment or harmony

3. THREE OF CUPS

Pictorial Symbolism : The Three of Cups card shows three woman are danc-
ing together in a circle and holding their cups high in joyful celebration. Their
arms reach out to each other to connect their feelings (Cups). Plenty of fruits
and flowers lie at their feet.

Interpretation : There are three cards in the tarot that focus on the group -
each from a different point of view. For the Hierophant, it’s the formal ap-
proach. For the Three of Pentacles it’s teamwork, and for the Three of Cups,
it’s emotions. In many settings, women create and nurture the social glue that
bonds people together. These dancing women are a symbol of coming together
in love. These feelings however do not only relate to woman. The Three of
Cups signifies a friend or the feelings associated with friendship. This card
represents community and the network of support that gets created when there
is good interaction among people. It can be

any group in which the members feel a bond. The Three of Cups examines
one’s attachments to the groups in life from an emotional point of view. It may
be consider one to reach out to give or receive help. This card stands for all
forms of support, including formal aid such as counseling and other social
services.

Divinatory Meaning : The women on the Three of Cups express joy and high
spirits. Such feelings are not limited to groups, but can be especially strong
there. Celebrations spontaneously arise when people feel connected, loved
and secure. The Three of Cups can stand for a mood or experience that
makes one feel like dancing and singing.

In a Reading : The Three of Cups card shows a celebration or happy oc-


casion when it comes in a reading. It’s a good card to get. It can signify a
marriage or birth, emotional growth and feeling of happiness and gains. It
shows that now is the opportune time to celebrate all your achievements and
enjoy the rewards of toil and labour. Great joy and pleasure is felt in rela-

reversed way it shows gratification of sensual pleasures. Achievement may


be there but of small things. It also shows that an excess of anything is bad.
Once people over does anything, it loses its importance and significance. One
may experience an inclination towards earthly pleasures rather than higher,
more philosophical ones.

The Temperance - If Three of Cups card comes with The Temperance then it
signifies joining forces that are working together.

Four of Wands - If Three of Cups card comes with Four of Wands then it
signifies excitement, high spirits and celebration.

4. FOUR OF CUPS

Pictorial Symbolism : A young man is seen sitting under a tree, looking at


three cups that are lying on the ground infront of him. He is ignoring or re-
fusing the fourth cup offered to him by a hand in the clouds. He has a lot
going for him but he is too bored, confused or unhappy to see the good
around him or benefit by taking the opportunity offered.

Interpretation : The Four of Cups represents periods of self-absorption. If


one is self-absorbed then one may tend to refer everything back to one self
that is one’s own interests and desires. This card shows a man who is un-
aware of the cup being offered to him. He misses this gift because he’s turned
within. The Four of Cups can indicate that the native is wrapped up for the
moment in his own world. In some situations, one must focus on self. When
life is too stressful, one should devote time and energy to oneself. The Four
of Cups represents a positive period of self-reflection and renewal. By tak

Divinatory Meaning : The Four of Cups is sometimes a sign of apathy. It


shows that native does not really care much about anything. His life seems
stale and flat because he has lost interest in the activities that used to bring
him pleasure. He may not be motivated to make much of an effort in any di-
rection. At such times, the Four of Cups can show that native is stuck emo-

involvement, caring and taking part.

Four of Wands - If Four of Cups card comes with Four of Wands then it
signifies excitement, high energy and optimism.

Eight of Pentacles - If Four of Cups card comes with Eight of Pentacles then it
signifies making an effort and working hard.

Opposing Cards with Four of Cups

The Hermit - If Four of Cups card comes with The Hermit then it signifies
withdrawing and being introverted.

5. FIVE OF CUPS

Pictorial Symbolism : The Five of Cups card has a figure in a black dress
who is crying over three spilt cups but does not see the two full cups behind
him. There is a stream flowing which indicates the inner feelings and beyond
it here is a bridge leading to a castle. There is regret over past actions, some-
thing is lost but something still remains.

Interpretation : The Five of Cups card is about loss. On this card, there is
a figure draped in black and covered in grief. He so dominates the card that
it is hard to look beyond him. The Five of Cups refers to that time when the
pain of a loss is most acute. This man is looking only at the overturned cups
in front of him. For now, he cannot acknowledge the two cups that are still
standing. Later, when he has healed somewhat, he will be able to see all that
remains. Five of Cups can alert native to the possibility of a loss and its as-
sociated emotions like sorrow, regret and

what this card represents, however if he does not know then use it as a warn-
ing to help avoid loss.

Divinatory Meaning : Native may feel discouraged by Five of Cups card,


but it does have a positive side. Every loss opens new possibilities for growth
because every loss initiates change. Loss hurts because it is one’s emotional
resistance to change. Native may have experienced great losses, yet he
should not lose heart. In fact, he should be glad because irrespective of what
may happen today, the Sun will shine again soon and life will be much hap-
pier and satisfying than ever before.

In a Reading : The Five of Cups card shows sorrow, dejection, depression,

signifies absolving yourself and releasing regret.

6. SIX OF CUPS

Pictorial Symbolism : A boy is offering a little girl a cup filled with flowers
and five more flower filled cups stand nearby. The cottage and the village be-
hind show thought of home and childhood memories.

Interpretation : The Six of Cups is a card of simple goodness. It encour-


ages native to be kind, generous and forgiving. Small gestures, barely no-
ticed, but so important. The Six of Cups also represents innocence, a word
with many shades of meaning. One can be innocent in the strictly legal sense
of lack of guilt. One can be lacking in deceit or corruption, innocent of ulte-
rior motive. Finally, one can be virtuous or chaste. These are all possibilities
that can apply to the Six of Cups depending on the situation.

Divinatory Meaning : Notice that the two figures on the Six of Cups

appear to be children. Often this card represents a baby or young child. In


a larger sense, it embraces all of childhood and the feelings one may asso-
ciate with youth like being carefree, playful, secure and loved. Children are
treasure and the sweetness of the Six of Cups is a quality to be treasured
as well.

In a Reading : The Six of Cups means meeting with an old friend or child-
hood acquaintance, an old lover may re-appear or a relationship could be
revived. It also shows past efforts could bring present or future rewards. One
could also rejoice in past memories. The times that have gone by should not
always be wiped away from memory. In fact, they should be held on to at
times because they can inspire and infuse with strength and courage. Ac-
quaintances and associates who have known us for many years will stand in
good stead in these days and times. The Six of Cups means memories, look-
ing back and thoughts of past lives. It shows happiness coming from the past
from thoughts of things that have vanished. It gives a promise for the future,
of renewal, happiness and of love to come.

Reversed Meaning of the Card : If Six of Cups card comes in reverse then
it means new friends, new knowledge and new environment. It signifies
changes in attitudes and relationships. It points at things to come soon or

The Star - If Six of Cups card comes with The Star then it signifies good will
and sharing.

feeling blessed, happy and joyful.

7. SEVEN OF CUPS

Pictorial Symbolism : There are seven cups rising out of the clouds in front
of a confused man. There is a face of a woman, a shroud, a snake, a dragon,
a palace, jewels and a wreath with a skull below it. There is a choice to be
made which could be difficult.

Interpretation : The Seven of Cups card shows that there are seven cups
rising out of the clouds in front of a man and he has to make a choice out
of them. Each Cup has an item which has a deep underlying meaning. There
is a face of a woman which shows his own ideal. There is a shroud which
indicates his own divinity. The snake in card shows jealousy. The dragon rep-
resents temptation. The jewels signifies material gains. A wreath with a skull
below it shows victory by good or unfair means. Seven of Cups shows how
disordered situation is. Perhaps one needs to let things fall apart a little. When
a rigid system breaks up, there can be a tremendous

release of creativity. The man on the Seven of Cups is amazed by all the
options he has. On the other hand, if native is in a chaotic situation then some
tightening may be necessary. No one is happy and productive in a crazy en-
vironment. Regularity gives structure to life. Taken to an extreme, the loose-
ness of the Seven of Cups can lead to harmful patterns of decadence, ad-
diction and self-indulgence.

Divinatory Meaning : The Seven of Cups stands for all that is sloppy and
impractical. When laziness applies to thoughts and dreams then it is easy to
wish for something, but not so easy to make that wish come true. When this
card is seen then reader must make sure that querent is backing up his plans
with work and effort. Querent must tighten up his life and commit to do ef-
forts to reach his goals.

discipline and structure.

8. EIGHT OF CUPS

Pictorial Symbolism : A man turns his back on eight neatly lined cups and
heads towards the mountain. The Moon, which is both full and quarter, signi-
fies the end and beginning of something new. It also shows deceit.

Interpretation : The Eight of Cups card stands for those moments when one
realises once and for all that the past is gone. What was true is no longer
true. The signs of change are in front and one must accept them. It is time
to move on. Moving on can mean a physical change such as leaving a job,
location or relationship. It can also mean an inner change, releasing old pat-
terns, especially those that have dominated one’s thoughts and emotions. In
