INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS MINDSET?

In today’s fast paced world, we are continuously faced with challenges in


both our personal and professional lives. But challenge is good, as without
it, there is no opportunity to grow. From tackling the day to building the
future, our perspectives greatly influence how we approach and overcome
them. This is where the concept of mindset comes in. The term mindset
refers to our beliefs, attitudes and values that then shape our thoughts,
behaviours and emotions. It shapes the way we see the world and our
position in it, and it has a profound impact on our lives.

We as humans have one thing that sets us apart from every other mammal
on the planet, and that thing is imagination. Our prefrontal cortex, the part
of the brain responsible for functions such as planning, decision making
and regulating behaviour is up to 4 times larger than other primates, and
several times larger than any other mammal on the planet. We have been
blessed with the power to THINK.

Research shows that individuals that have constructed a positive mindset


are more likely to experience happiness and success in their lives. They are
better equipped to handle stress, overcome obstacles and achieve their
goals. However we are, by default, wired to think negatively. After all, it’s
our minds way of providing the utmost protection from any situation that
may arise. From planning our survival if attacked by a bear when hunting
for food all those years ago, to re-organising our finances late at night in
case of that job cut, our minds see no difference in working to survive. The
problem here is, a negative mindset will hold us back. This will limit our
potential and prevent us from excelling in life.

Overcoming this default survival mode we have inherited from the early
years, is what shifts our mindset from negative to positive. To be able to
quickly view things from an advantageous perspective and always win.

Building a strong mindset may not always seem easy, but it is simple. The brain is
made up of many different types of chemicals, also known as neurotransmitters, and
we have the ability to produce all of the feel good chemicals we desire with much less
friction than you think.

The power to unlocking your mind and releasing that full potential can be found
through 3 simple steps that I follow daily. I call this switching on my GPS. We will
delve deeper into each step on the following pages, detailing how you too could
switch on your GPS and elevate your mindset.

GRATITUDE

The most effective way to improve your mindset every day is to practice gratitude.
This involves taking time to acknowledge and appreciate the good things in your life,
and trust me, there are plenty. Just by having the ability to read this, through the
means of internet connectivity, you are more fortunate than around 3 billion people.
But there is far more to be grateful for than just what’s on the web. Look around the
room right now and make a mental note of 5 things you are grateful for. It could be
the comfortable chair you are sitting on, or the delicious food you just ate. Maybe
even a hug from a loved one. Then take a moment to yourself and notice the impact it
has on your mind. Rewarding right? Practising gratitude is simple, just be sure to
recognise your fortune. Below is one easy task you can implement into your day to
practice gratitude and contribute to a positive mindset.

day by writing three things down, no matter
how small or seemingly insignificant. For an

are grateful for helps you shift your focus from
what you lack to what you have.

The mind craves those feel good chemicals at every passing moment, and we have
the ability to generate a more positive mindset through the actions that we take. By
feeling a sense of productivity and completing tasks set, dopamine and serotonin
(amongst other neurotransmitters) are released, which can improve our overall
mood. This in turn can generate a reinforcement of behaviour, motivating us to
continue in an upward spiral with a highly satisfied and efficient mind. Over the
years, there have been multiple solutions for increasing productivity and below are
two that I incorporate into my daily habits.

Allen F. Morgenstern was an Industrial Engineer in the early 20th century and is
credited for coining the phrase work smart, not hard. In his book “The Psychology
of Industrial Efficiency”, published in 1933, Morgenstern wrote “The human animal
does not work so much by brute force as by brain force. This means that a man
who works hard is not necessarily working efficiently, and often his greatest efforts
are misdirected.”

It is not uncommon to feel overwhelmed from time to time. In today’s fast paced
environment, there is always something to do. But how we act will determine our state of
mind. This starts by simplifying our choices. Co-founder and former CEO of Apple, Steve
Jobs, was known for wearing the same outfit every day. Jobs explained in an interview
that he adopted this wardrobe in order to simplify his daily routine and reduce the amount
of decisions he had to make each day. By eliminating the need to choose what to wear, he
was able to free up mental energy for more important decisions.

Simplifying your day for a more improved frame of mind does not mean throw out your
entire wardrobe and stock up on the same brand plain black tee’s, but it does mean go
easy on yourself. Create a routine. Declutter your environment. Take a moment to breathe.
