Exploration Project Presentation

Jacques Cartier was a famous French explorer from the 1500s. He conducted three voyages to Canada and the St. Lawrence River region under the sponsorship of King Francis I of France. On his first voyage in 1534, he explored the Gulf of St. Lawrence and met Native Americans. Though he failed to find gold or a northern passage to Asia, his explorations helped establish French territorial claims in North America.

Second St.Lawrence Sail
In the year 1536,Jacques returned to
the Saint Lawrence River. When he
returned he came with more ships and
men. Later that year, he had a brief sail
to the area around Montreal. When he
had this foray he arrived at La Chine
Rapids. This was one of his most
difficult sails. The severe and harsh
weather made it harder to sail. Without
the help of his Indian guides he
wouldn’t have been prepared for what
was coming next. There were three
additional stretches of rapids. With this
problem he avoided the rapids by
returning to his base camp.
Third & Final Voyage
Jacques final voyage was to the
New World in 1541.He arrived in
the Quebec region before
Roberval.Although he had Indian
guides he wasn’t a friend to the
Native American Tribes. This
relationship with them jeopardized
attempts at a settlement. He then
returned to France without
venturing beyond the rapids. He
never revisited Canada but his sails
did help explorers with what is
known as New France.
