Carpets, rugs, and floor mats – general Version no: AA-707377-1
requirements
1 All finished products shall pass through a magnetic metal detector after packing. Detector-
sensitivity shall be of at least 1.5 mm diameter of metal objects. The detector is to be
handled by a trained operator. The testing area (packing area) is to be designated as a non-
metal area.
2 There shall be a procedure for the issuing of needles, scissors or other metal tools to
operators, and for ensuring collection of all parts when a needle, scissors etc. is broken or
missing. All transactions shall be documented, including broken parts, and be attached in a
log book. If all parts of a broken needle, scissors etc. cannot be recovered, then all goods
produced by that operator shall be isolated. Further examined shall be performed by metal
detector before release of goods from the isolated batch.
2 Material requirements
Material specific tests are determined by the material on the user surface of the carpet. The
toughest requirement applies when more than one material are applicable. The material
requirements are valid for the complete product as delivered, with all its constituent parts and
materials.
2.1 Wool
Wool carpets shall be evaluated according to the requirements for finished carpets and with
additional colour fastness and mechanical requirements, see Table 7, and Table 8. Further
additional mechanical requirements are determined by the product type as specified in section 3
Product types.
2.2 Synthetic
Synthetic carpets shall be evaluated according to the requirements for finished carpets and with
additional colour fastness requirements, see Table 9. Additional mechanical requirements are
determined by the product type as specified in section 3 Product types.
2.3 Natural
Natural carpets shall be evaluated according to the requirements for finished carpets and with
additional colour fastness requirements, see Table 10. Additional mechanical requirements are
determined by the product type as specified in section 3 Product types.
Natural products are defined as plant fibres or other materials coming from plants that can form
a textile structure, the only material that is excluded from this is cotton which can be found in
section 2.4. Some examples of natural products are jute, coir, and banana.
Table 10 Colour fastness requirements for natural material
Test Method Requirement Standard Verification
Colour fastness to light ≥5 ISO 105-B02, IOS-TM-0007 Test report
Colour fastness to rubbing
- Dry staining ≥3-4
- Dry colour change ≥3-4
ISO 105-X12, IOS-TM-0007 Test report
- Wet staining ≥3
- Wet colour change ≥3
2.4 Cotton
Cotton carpets shall be evaluated according to requirements for finished carpets and with
additional colour fastness requirements, see Table 11. Additional mechanical requirements are
determined by the product type as specified in section 3 Product types.
3 Product types
The requirements on different product types conclude additional mechanical requirements.
Combinations of structures shall be evaluated according to combined requirements. Example: If
a carpet has both Cut Pile and flat woven in the user surface, the Cut Pile parts shall be
evaluated according to requirements for Cut Pile carpets, and the flat woven parts shall be
evaluated according to requirements for flat woven carpets.
4 Documentation
Verifying tests shall be made at IKEA approved test laboratories. Contact IKEA for a list of
approved laboratories.
Test reports shall, in addition to the test result, state a full identification of the tested sample.
This information shall be provided to the laboratory in the test order.
When the IKEA supplier orders verifying tests, the supplier shall inform the laboratory that IKEA
has permission to receive copies of the test report from the laboratory.
To enable automatic creation of a General Certificate of Conformity, specific to the product, the
IKEA supplier shall:
In Connect, fill in appropriate document information.
Under Document-content description, do the following:
1. Requirement source: Select CPSA/CPSIA.
2. Sub-type: Select standard/regulation
3. Level: Select Complies, Does not comply, or N/A as appropriate.
4. Click Add content description.
5. Repeat step 1 to 4 for every 16 CFR regulation in Sub-type.
See Appendix A for further information about CPSA/CPSIA and corresponding requirements
1
The supplier shall use Connect within three months from the date the supplier has received training in
Connect. Meanwhile, any document not uploaded to Connect shall be retained by the supplier for at least 15
years. On request, the document shall be provided to IKEA, in English, by the next working day.
