The Water Cycle

Natural places where water is stored on Earth include the Earth's surface, running in rivers and pooling in ponds. Precipitation comes in the forms of rain, snow, and hail and is the process of water falling to the Earth's surface. When water evaporates from clothes outside on a rainy day and the clothes dry after 20 minutes, the water evaporated into the air. Evaporation is the process where water changes from a liquid to a gas and requires energy from the sun. On a hot day, condensation occurs when water vapor in the air condenses into liquid water droplets on the outside of a cold glass of ice water. Clouds typically form at high altitudes in the atmosphere because temperatures are lower

You are on page 1/ 1

1) Name 3 natural places where water is stored on Earth.

Earth's surface, running in rivers,

pooling in ponds, flowing from faucets, irrigating crops, traveling through plants,

2) What is precipitation? Give 3 types of precipitation. : Precipitation is the process of water falling
onto

the surface of the Earth. You can have precipitation in many

forms- rain, snow, hail.
Rain is falling water in liquid form. Snow,
ice, hail and sleet are falling water in solid, or frozen form.

3) You are outside on a rainy day. You go inside to dry off and after 20 minutes you
realize all the water is now gone from your clothes. What happened to it and where did
it go? Water evaporates from every wet surface – even fromwet air. Some rain and snow evaporates into the air
while

falling.

4) Explain the process of evaporation. What is needed for this process to happen . Water
evaporates through our respiration and perspiration and from plants, through transpiration. Trans means through or
across. Plant roots draw up groundwater.

5) Its 105 degree day in Bakersfield. Your glass of ice water now has beads of water
forming on the outside. Where did this water come from?
6) Explain the process of condensation.Condensation is the process by which water
vapor in the air is changed into liquid water. ... These clouds may produce precipitation,
which is the primary route for water to return to the Earth's surface within the water
cycle. Condensation is the opposite of evaporation.
7) Why do clouds typically form high in the atmosphere? Explanation: This process
usually occurs higher up in the atmosphere when the temperature drops and an air
parcel starts to get saturated as it rises. When all the right conditions are in place, the
small crystals of water start to condense out and clouds form.
8) When the drops of water in a cloud get too heavy what happens to them? What
forces causes them to fall to the ground? This occurs through two processes. In cold
clouds ice crystals and water droplets exist side by side. Due to an imbalance of water
vapor pressure, the water droplets transfer to the ice crystals. The crystals eventually
grow heavy enough to fall to earth.
9) When water precipitates to the ground as rain or snow, where are 3 places it may
collect? water, ice and snowflakes.
10) Extension question: Bakersfield drinking water primarily comes from aquifers of
water below the ground. However, these aquifers have become smaller and smaller
over the years. Use your knowledge of the water cycle to explain why that is. The water
being pumped is at atmospheric pressure and comes from an unconfined aquifer.
